I don't undertand what you're getting at here flopp, how would you put it?

I gave some money to a drunk once; he had a sign saying “Only for beer”, so I gave him 3$.

In my country, people don’t have to be homeless, there are always alternatives. Its something they choose, and therefore I rarely pay them any attention.

I give my money only to those, whom I deem, deserve it.

<sigh> Point is, you are being TOO GENERAL. Your argument does not apply. "Almost all" is moot. I'm talking about MY EXPERIENCES. Presuming to speak for all is stupid, which you seem to be doing. I don't care if 'IN MANY CASEs' society caused the homeless to be homeless (which in itself is lame unless you can give me some reasoning behind that statement)... This 'fact' of yours does not bear any significance to my post.

i dont give homeless people money, but feel sorry for them, i just dont want to waste my money

There is a pan handler in Northern Kentucky (Cincinnati south of the Ohio River) that has pan handled that area for 20yrs. He drives a new SUV and used to use his family while at work.

Near my appartment (near the university), there is a panhandler who is homeless because he chooses to drink. He is not allowed to recieve his inheritence unless he is sober.

A week ago someone came to my door asking for money to pay his wife's bail for DUI, he tried to get me to accept a bogus check in exchange for cash and when I asked which police station to call and check, he left inside of 2 seconds.

Three weeks ago a guy came to my door claiming that he needed bus fares for him and his 3 kids. He said that they were at an elementary school just down the street.
It was before school started and he needed bus fares for 15miles beyond the school district.

There is a guy who attends my church and occastionally asks attendees for money. He recieves checks from the government and handouts from my church. I've been assured that he does not need to ask for money from a 4th yr college student.

A couple months back there was a big fight regarding homeless and the City of Cincinnati. It quieted down when it became clear that many of them were just lazy bums and scam artists.

I do sympathize with the mentally off, but our government does provide for them and what we really need is to reopen the mental assylums rather than programs for scam artists. That we the people that need it get the help and those that don't, have to get a job.

I give to charity (what little I can) and if in doubt, I will give a little to panhandler's that look like they truely are some guy that is out of gas or whatever (but never what they ask for).

If i see a homeless person i might buy them some food but i'd never give them money because they often will spend it on drugs or alcohol. It's classic when some guy comes up to you in a mall and says he ran out of gas for his car and needs money, but has a new pack of cigarettes in his hand.

My dad has a story similar to that of Cimbri. Once he was approaching the town's grocery store (HEB) and saw a panhandler bearing a sign. The inscription on the sign was "Why lie? I need a beer." Dad gave him five bucks. That could have bought him a six pack of Lone Star or Pabst Blue Ribbon and left him with money to spare.
