Citizen_K that has absolutely nothing to do with what people are talking about here, or are you trying to make a point for Canadian? hehe.
I don't know much about British comedy. What I have seen is Benny Hill (not funny), Are You Being Served (also not funny), Keeping up Appearances (slightly funny), and one of my favorite movies ever Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail (loved it).

As for American, most is mind numbing. Friends (fills me with contempt same thing EVERY show- joey and phoebe say something stupid - chandler/sarcastic - monica/demanding/anal - rachel and ross/whiney. there you have every episode mix and match), Sienfeld- george was funny - sienfeld was a whiney wussy man that couldn't act and told dumb one liners, Cheers could be likened to friends above. There are some good ones though- Married with Children, Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, All in the Family, etc.
IMHO

It's very difficult to tell which is best. I prefer American animation comedy, South Park, Home Movies, The Simpsons etc...
I deffinantly prefer British programme comedy, I love the sarcasim and fun-poking at things.
Like in Father Ted how they make fun of priests as being gamblers, drunks and all-sorts. And I adore Blackadder just for the excellant humour involved.
Difficult choice so I'll abstain.

As weird as British Humour is, it's better than the pathetic American strand...
