Don't talk to the police (at least in the US)

Is this really how it is? Is this a general rule we can all just remember? Does this go for other countries with similar rights?

To the extent possible, it is best not to speak to police, though there is an art to it - you may have to do a little polite small talk to avoid being hauled off to jail for being a libertarian jerk.

Don't say anything that could be slightly construed to mean consent.

You could be saying "I understand," at an explanation the cop is giving you, and suddenly that's consent for him searching your car.

Also, it's fully legal for police to literally rob you if you have any cash. Or goodies of any kind, apparently.

My admittedly limited experience with the police in the US is that while they are professional and polite for the most part, they tend be overzealous and once they get the impression that you were doing something wrong it takes a lot of talking to convince them otherwise.

So I certainly advise against this "don't talk to the police" line. I actually managed to talk myself out of being taken to jail once (I wasn't doing anything illegal btw. I was about to, but the cop couldn't really know it for sure).

The Canadians are alarmed about it too.

I remember that report on CBC. Yes, we are alarmed, and evidently with good reason.

BTW, to any American or other non-Canadians here who plan to come to Canada... Canadian cops are taser-happy. There have been numerous deaths due to the use of tasers, by cops who prefer to use those first and ask questions later. Personally, I have yet to meet a cop I felt I could trust, including the husband of one of my typing clients (from back in the '80s).

The thing is, if you're a crazy (but still rationally self-interested) libertarian, it's in your best interest to follow his guide, while convincing everyone else to act like you'd expect a crazy libertarian to.
