Don't Tell the Bride!

It's my understanding that the big part of it is keeping these folks happy...

I'm only attracted to the sane ones :p

(I wish)

But...but... warpus! I thought we had something special!
I don't know really, I'm not saying I think it's RIGHT to spend that much money, I just think it's standard practice though because if it's wedding it's immediately 4 times the price, and then 4 times again if you do it at Christmas or Valentines.

Yeah, to me anything that costs more "just because" is pretty much a ripoff. Sorry women! I would much rather put down the $20k on a downpayment and our future instead of cake

Cos capitalism and society dictates that they are the 'most romantic' times of year to get married. Frankly I don't care what date it is. I think it's probably more romantic to get married on the anniversary of you getting together or something like that. I'm definitely not silly enough for a Christmas/Valentines wedding unless I had the unlimited funds to do so :p. My wedding will be one big party celebrating how much I love the person I'm marrying, I can't wait!

If it's open bar I hope I'm invited!

If you are only in it for the publicity though...
Reality starlet Kim Kardashian and NBA basketball player Kris Humphries were not meant to be together forever after all.

Seventy-two days after their lavish wedding ceremony, which cost an estimated $10 million and was subsequently televised to more than 4 million viewers, the couple announced their split.

It was something many celebrity watchers saw coming. But shed no tears for this couple — they're going to be just fine, say the experts. At least there are no kids, the pre-nup should not be a problem, and the golden Kardashian brand should be safe.

If they get a Trekkie on that show, it might be worth watching :p
Dressed in Starfleet uniform, Klingon regalia, Vulcan robes, or Betazoid style? If it's the latter, the show wouldn't make it past the censors... :p

But why does it cost four times more just because it is a wedding? ;)
For the same reason a $3 tool costs $800 just because it's for the military.

Sounds like you've got nothing to worry about.
Ever priced out flowers, cake, meals for the reception, decorations, limousines, etc.?

Sheesh, I've planned medieval-themed banquets for 100 people on less than $500! Mind you, that's with the food not being catered.

One thing I've noticed is that wedding supplies are a "hot" item on Freecycle. A bride who is lucky can get everything from her dress, veil, and shoes to the decorations for absolutely ZERO money. Of course, she has to not mind that at least some of it will have been previously used.

You see, this is the best part of dating another man. No need to spend money on an expensive useless dress, no real desire to have some princess wedding, neither person has invested time into planning a wedding since they were four, with dreams of the perfect veil or flower item and so on.

I get splurging a little more to make the day a little more special and personal, but there are plenty of things women can do to save on money. For one thing, they should just rent their dresses. How is it that women all over the planet cannot understand the insanity of spending $4000 on a dress they will wear just once in their life? Another thing they can do is not invite more than say 50 people to the reception. Catering is the big expensive slice of the bill. Cutting down on the number of people will go a long way. The only truly justifiable expensive cost is the location. If you spend a couple of thousand dollars to rent a giant private and beautiful manor house in the countryside, it's money well spent.

No offense but don't a lot of gay guys like fancy weddings and celebrations?

I can see the insanity in doing so, I'm just not willing to make it a rubbish one either :p

We can enjoy it vicariously without suffering the consequences. I had an ill advised date drag me to the awful Sex and the City 2 and while I've never been to a gay wedding I can say none of them are actually like that. A sober looking Liza Minelli should have been enough to tell everyone that the scene was total fiction.
