its all a question of taste..

some of them were intended for series production but were overtaken by ICBM development, some resulted in other projects like Harrier and Osprey and some were just *fantasy*..

The Soviets always had a penchant for function over form, just look at the Yak-28. The old Soviet system for reviewing designs and the controlled economy also meant that any design that showed promise was at least given a prototype, which is where a lot of these weird designs come from.
