Dr.NES - The D.O.O.M. Project

"I will take the other 4-8 pm shift."

It was my understanding that O'Neill and his party were going to meet up with us at Village D.

Magus will have the last shift.

The wind brushing her face woke her from the darkness she had struggled to climb out of. At first she couldn't remember anything, not her name nor why she was in so much pain. It all came back in a rush as she gently touched her swelling face. "F---ing Bastard piece of sh!t coward." she croaked before spitting out a glob of dirt and blood.

Slowly she got herself into a sitting position, clenching her teeth against the spikes of pain that rippled from her face to her stomach and back again. The Spetsnaz had simply smacked her around at first, but then he began laying in with his fists. He'd knocked her head a couple times then stopped to see if she'd talk. Since she didn't know anything she simply spat at him which provoked him into another round of brutality. A hard blow to her abdomen had forced the air right out of her but he didn't wait for her to recover. Rachel wasn't sure how long the beating had lasted but it had felt like eternity till she finally blacked out.

Her nose was probably broken. Her left eyelid was swelling up, probably wouldn't be able to see from that eye soon. She didn't think any ribs were broken thankfully though her lower abdomen hurt so badly it was hard for her to bend her body. Rachel didn't even want to think about how badly messed up her face must look. Not going to be having any guys looking my way for a while she thought with a snort that only caused further pain.

Finally Rachel took stock of her surroundings. She was surprised to find that her weapon, the radio, and her backpack were all neatly stacked right by the wreckage of the downed helicopter. Her surprise continued as she realized that the spetsnaz operative had not only let her live, but given her the capability to reconnect with her team and possibly survive this mess. That F---ers gonna regret letting me walk away if I ever catch up to him she thought grimly as she reached out for the radio.

Her voice still sounded funny as she put the call out in hopes of finding her team. "This... is Rachel... I am at the crash site.... in need of assistance. Over." She spat up another gob of blood as she waited for a reply. Must of bit my tongue

Ruben directed a sharp look in the direction of the crash site upon receiving Rachel's message, then motioned for Niki to put down his radio.

"No, don't respond. We don't want to give away our position or intention. Let's just move."

Sarge and his team was just entering the Jungle when the radio cackled to life, reading the broken message Sarge signaled for the team to stop, immediately the squad took defensive positions and waited.

Sarge knew the voice, after all how many females were on the squad, Sarge debated whether or not to double check with Ruben to make sure he got the message or just ignore it and continue on. The radio silence was there for a reason, and Sarge did not want to break it unless absolutely necessary. After thinking it over for a minute, Sarge ordered the team to move forward and tucked the radio back on his belt, Ruben got the message he reckoned and decided it was not worth the risk.

Also, Dreadnought, here is my finalized shift rotation should you need it:
When we stop for the day to rest, I want to establish a 3 shift rotation:
7 am to noon. (Sarge, Marcus)
Noon to 4 pm. (Nigel, Nestor)
4 pm to 8 pm. (Jaguar, Magus)

O’Neill cursed aloud. How could Rachel have disappeared like this? “We need to find her. ASAP.”

Sarge nodded. “What’s the plan?”

O’Neill thought for a moment, then said, “We need to backtrack. We have to check her last known position and move on from there. Me, Doc…Donald and Nigel. The rest of you, head to Village D and bunker up. We’ll meet you there at noon tomorrow. Sarge, you’re in command.”

Sarge nodded again. “Yes sir!”

Doc moved next to O’Neill, followed by Nigel and Donald. “I got your back, boss.”

Nigel sighed. “I hope she’s ok.”

O’Neill agreed. “Let’s move out!”

They turned, continuing northward, the setting sun barely illuminating their disappearing outlines.

Sarge turned to the rest of the group. “You heard our orders. We need to get to Village D as soon as possible.”

Magnus continued to bandage Marcus’s wounds.

“We will wait there for O’Neill and friends to get back. Keep your eyes open.”

Rachel awoke from her ‘sleep’. She felt sore all over, the weariness overtaking her. She was tired and fatigued.

She rolled over and noticed she was lying next to the ruined helicopter. Shimmying over, she leaned backwards against its cracked and bent frame, trying to compose herself. The sun was setting fast - she needed to set up a perimeter.

Where was her weapon? “****,” she cursed, then she cursed again when she deduced that all her equipment, including her laptop and radio, was probably gone.

Yet there it was, neatly stacked nearby. Why would the Russian let her keep her equipment?

It mattered not. She needed to radio O’Neill and find where they were.

“This... is Rachel... I am at the crash site.... in need of assistance. Over.” She spat blood as she spoke.

She waited several moments for a reply, but received none. She was both calm and alarmed. Were the other soldiers ok? Were they maintaining radio silence?

Either way, she braced herself onto the helicopter with her weapon in her lap.

Sarge leads the mercenaries towards Village D

“Stay on guard,” he ordered from the head of the column, swinging his machine gun from side to side as he covered each end of the trail.

The other mercenaries were following in kind, save for Magnus and the Jaguar, who followed in the rear.

Magnus began the conversation. “I’m no military genius, but splitting the group is suicidal.”

The Jaguar agreed, whispering something to Magnus.

Magnus nodded, whispering back.

“...trying to save a girl who couldn’t keep up with us men. And then we got this guy, running around all gung-ho happy-go-lucky like he owns the place.”

Terni overheard this entire conversation. "Guys, don't talk like that..."

Magnus said, “We are in a matter of survival unlike any of our other assignments. This isn’t a babysitting job, nor is it a routine sweep to remove insurgents. We are facing an enemy that is faster, more numerous, and stronger than us."

The Jaguar was about to answer when Sarge called out from the front of the column. “Boys, we got Village D ahead of us.”

The group knelt in the tree line opposite the Village. The hut outlines were outlined in the growing darkness, their eerie shadows cast like an enveloping storm.

Marcus whispered, “Should we clear it before total nightfall?”

Sarge shook his head. “Negative. We are going to head into the jungle a ways. We need to stay in the general area though to rendezvous with the other guys tomorrow.”

They followed the plan, heading deeper into the jungle to find a suitable hideout until the following day. They were careful to track their location so as not to get lost.

Finally, they came upon an easily defendable position - a sort of grotto, formed by a wall of surrounding trees; conveniently, there were nice firing lanes from this area into the surrounding jungle.

“We’ll camp here for the night,” Sarge commanded.

The evening shift began, with Marcus and Sarge guarding the resting mercenaries. Each sprawled out in their own section to sleep for the night. Each, save one.

“Miguell,” Sarge began, “you need to get some sleep.”

Miguell was sitting upward, leaning against a tree. “I can’t sleep.”

“I know this was a crazy day, but we’ll cover you. No bogy will get you in the middle of the night.”

Miguell sighed. “It’s not that. I can’t sleep - I literarily can’t seem to fall asleep.”

Sarge shook his head. “You can guard with us.”

O’Neill’s Squad

iasf21_16413551.jpg

O’Neill led the rescue party to the field again, desperate to quickly find Rachel and leave the exposed position.

The moonless evening did not help their cause - the field remained completely dark and foreboding, with visibility limited to the range of the night vision goggles. Those often proved to be bulky, and their range was substantially reduced by the clouds often looming overhead in this tropical environment.

Their high-powered flashlights were, of course, turned off. There was no need to give an enemy sniper an easy shot in this area.

Still, the trip to the helicopter site proved to be uneventful, save for the constant panting of the traveling soldiers.

After a moderately timely journey, they returned to the helicopter site, though they momentarily stalled to ponder the issue of the situation. How would she know we are friendlies?

O’Neill did not want to use the radio, and he did not want to scream, either. Nevertheless, he did not want a bullet lodged in his chest, so he decided to slowly approach and hope for the best.

“Rachel,” he whispered, trying to get her attention.

She lay motionless, her body leaning against the helicopter. Her weapon was still held in her hands.

Dr. Garcia’s heart raced. Was she ok?

O’Neill smartly crept up to her position and disarmed her, then shook her. “Rachel?”

She snapped out of her torture-induced sleep, and immediately and instinctively moved to defend herself. Seeing it was O’Neill, however, she realized there was no threat.

Nigel sighed. “You took a beating. What happened?”

She began to talk, but Garcia interrupted her. “Let me ‘patch you up‘. Talk while I check your wounds.”

She told the soldiers her story. At its conclusion, O’Neill cursed. “Russians. Damnit.”

Donald chipped in quickly. “Sir, they could be preparing an attack. We need to set up a perimeter.”

O’Neill nodded. “We need to get out of here.”

Garcia interrupted. “She’s in no condition to move.” Rachel attempted to comment but the Doctor silenced her. “She has sustained severe neurological trauma. She needs to rest before she can move again. A few hours, tops.”

O’Neill sighed. “We’ll stay here for the night. I’ll take first watch. Nigel, you got phase two. Donald, you’ll take the last shift. Doc, stay with Rachel.”

* * *

The night for both squads in the beginning passed without incident.

Sarge’s Squad, 0200 Hours

Sarge sighed. “Miguell, get some sleep.”

“Sir…” he began, “I’m not feeling too good. I can’t sleep.”

Sarge was not amused. “Damnit, this is not the place to have a ‘tummy ache’. Snap out of it.”

Miguell agreed, nodding slowly. He turned to fall asleep. Yet, things did not feel too good.

He had a stomach cramp, and it was hurting.

He cursed, as his face got pale, and he vomited.

Sarge was immediately concerned. He shook Magnus awake instantly. “You’re a genius - we need a genius's help here.”

O’Neill’s Squad, 0245 Hours

The soldiers lay near the helicopter, hoping that the wreckage’s large shadow would conceal their position.

Nigel, however, knelt by the side of the wreck, diligently covering all angles in case of attack.

His night-vision goggles were annoying and cumbersome. He only had approximately a 40 degree field of vision, so he constantly had to turn from east, to north, to west, and south again to make use of the technology he had.

West is clear, turning south.

South is clear, turning east.

East is clear, turning…wait.

He squinted into the goggles, trying to double check his first trepidation.

Damn those goggles. They never worked when they need to.

He woke O’Neill. “Sir, check this out.”

O’Neill crept to Nigel’s position, eyeing the field to the east. There was definitely something there.

Should he turn on his high-powered flashlight?

It was a risk he needed to take. And this is what he saw:

NOTE: Space between O'Neill and the 'things' is dramatized.

There is a space of ~50 yards between them.

Check below for Day II's analysis.

Besides that, lemme know if anything is askew.

Group 1 is in the northern part of the field, group 2 is to the east of Village D.

END OF DAY 2
PERFORMANCE:

ORGANIZATION:

Excellent tactical planning to the villages, and to the field. However, was it a wise decision to split the squad in a hostile environment, when the enemy has the initiative? Especially when radio contact is not suggested and there is a substantial distance between the two groups?

STRATEGY:

Wise and reasonable strategy in the villages and the field. Your success in the ambush was worthy of praise. However, noting the example above, is it wise to split your force? Also, was calling in medical evacuation the wisest course of action? Could there have been a better plan in place, or was your strategy the wisest in this situation?

LOGIC:

You followed a clear and concise plan throughout the mission. However, is it wise for subordinates to not only question their leaders, but also threaten insubordination, especially in an environment such as this? (especially when such action distracts the group from the roll-call of members). And, is it wise for two soldiers to scout into the deep jungle on their own, rather than staying with the main group? Will a civilian distract the squad from its ultimate objective?

OVERALL PERFORMANCE: We are still pleased with your performance, and are hoping for the best.

* * *

Keep in mind this is not a concrete analysis; it is meant to open up ideas for your own thought processes. Of course, we have not been in such a situation as a company before. :) We merely wish each of you to asses your past course of action and judge whether it was sufficient. Was your plan illogical, or do you think it was the best for the situation? All subjective questions.

"Damn it!"

Magus rushes towards Miguel and does a full examination as far as he can remember from first aid and field medicine ran by the company a few years ago and his medical training along with his degree in biology nearly thirty years ago. Once he has a diagnosis he will act accordingly.

Sarge watched Magus work with Miguel and asks, "What is wrong with him?"

Sarge hoped O'Neill found the girl and is now on his way here, he had excellent fire coverage but he knew O'Neills group is exposed and even outnumbered should they be attacked. But nonetheless he had orders to stay at Village D until O'Neill arrives. So he will wait, but this new problem with Miguel is just making matters worst, the smell of vomit would no doubt attract predators or worse.....

OOC: I think I already said that this was going on much like 28 Days Later... t'was nice to meet you, Miguel...

IC:
¡Mierda! Niki thought, his eyes wide awake and the carbine ready to shoot on any of those zombi-like people.

"Guys, try to converge towards my position, if we stay around Rachel we will be able to present an united front, and, while she can't stand up yet, I think she wouldn't have any problem with shooting with a gun from the floor. How many zombies can you count, Ruben?"

OOC: Dread what do I find?

"I'm still working on it."

Terni spat. "Check his wounds and maybe his blood, I will secure a perimeter with a few guys (points vaguely) and let you check on him"

Terni marches foward and starts a visual sweep of the area.

OOC: Charles, you realize they are not attacking us, we are still sitting peacefully by waiting for O'Neill's team to arrive. There is no need to do anything in a defensive manner yet.

Vicente stared down Miguell. He was starting to look worse and worse...and now he was puking his guts out, while complaining about insomnia. It was a good while since his dressings were replaced, and in this jungle environment, the risk of contracting disease is higher. He turned to the goon and spoke.

"Hey, Doc needs to check out Miguell the instant he gets back. His condition is bad, and we need to find out what's up."

He looked back at Miguell and cringed slightly as a new mouthful of vomit erupted out of him. It was then, at that exact moment, that Vicente thought the worst. His eyes widened. He couldn't be becoming...one of...them, could he? He then slipped his hand into his jacket, and gripped his pistol. If he proved to have been infected, Vicente would be the one to drop him. He wouldn't let Miguell out of his sight.

He pulled his hand out of his jacket and turned to Eduardo.

Spoiler Portuguese :
You wouldn't happen to have any holy water on you, would you? Miguell is beginning to worry me.

"Wait. This could be completely unrelated. There is no need to even think about shooting him yet."

Magus proceeds with a full exam. He checks the wound and wound site for signs of infection or inflammation, avoiding direct contact with the wounds; he palpates the wound site, the stomach, the head and the neck; he checks temperature by feeling the forehead and, if allowed and there is a private place, uses a old-fashioned glass thermometer to take a anal temperature (mercury is not a good thing to ingest and shoving a glass thermometer down someone's ear wouldn't really work); he checks the Miguel's resting respiration rate; finally he checks to see if Miguel is confused or disorientated or has any other symptoms.

OOC: I assume you mean the colour is yellowy-green and of normal consistency. That's good at least.

OOC: Charles, you realize they are not attacking us, we are still sitting peacefully by waiting for O'Neill's team to arrive. There is no need to do anything in a defensive manner yet.

OOC: I know, I am just doing my 'Old Soldier who had seen almost it all' habits. (pulls some dentures out. :P)
