I would not consider myself a big drinker but I am a habitual drinker.

I am considering giving up as I don't really get anything positive from it any more.
Hangovers come more easily and I don't have the luxury of slacking off for a morning.

I live out in the countryside now so I am very dependent on driving - taxis in and out of town to socialise would be expensive. I have had several events, especially over Christmas like the office Christmas party where I chose to drive and not drink and I don't feel like I missed out on anything. The opposite in fact as I went home at a reasonable hour and was able to get up the next morning without a bother.

Anyone else have similar experiences or advice?

Personally alcohol isn't really an issue in my life as I no longer drink like I did when I was younger. I.e. get really drunk then really hung over. I still love a nice buzz but getting trashed isn't desirable for me at all anymore. Haven't been very drunk/hung over now in years. But would miss it if I had to go completely dry for long stretches.

There's the health aspect too. Even moderate drinking just isn't good for you, specially when compared to less harmful drugs.

I drank my average daily requirement for life by the time I was 25. Also
opiates when I could get good pharmaceutical quality from doctors who
I knew.

I haven't owned a car for over 30 years because it was easier to catch cabs
to and from parties. I like them because I have always lived close to the
city and university. It would be very expensive if you live far from work
and your regular haunts.

I stopped drinking/injecting at 30, before we had a kid, because it doesn't
make for a stable, happy family. Weed worked very well for me. I stayed at
home, brought up the baby, taught myself aerodynamics and applied maths,
published several papers as an undergraduate, which eventually led to a
PhD without finishing a BSc.

Alcohol is a very dumb drug. I much prefer weed, caffeine (lots and lots),
maths and prescription dexedrine. :)

That's easy to fix, Lohrenswald

I'm a home brewer and craft beer nerd so its kind of my hobby but usually just a beer or two a night and when I "binge" its usually around 3 or 4 pints at most. I gave up hard stuff years ago and I feel much better.

Find a drink that tastes good even as it warms and has a "filling" aspect and it's easy to keep it at a minimum. That's been my problem with American light lagers (Bud, Miller, Coors) they taste like crap when they get over 40°F so you have to drink them faster and you can easily chug them all night. That's what's turned good nights to bad nights for me in recent years.

I also find the crowd I'm around at beer events or the local brewery knows how to keep things reigned in a little better and pace themselves. Alcohol's pretty enjoyable if you know how to pace yourself, keep it moderate and stay hydrated.

I have tried to drink at least a cup of wine daily as medics recommend but cant do it. Cant stand alcohol taste. :vomit:

I will drink one or two really good beers sometimes. 'Sometimes' meaning I might do that three or four times in a couple weeks time, but I also might just not do it at all for a few months on end. I will get the occasional bottle of really good Scotch and nurse one Scotch rocks through an evening sometimes. Such bottles generally last three or four months. I did get a pretty strong buzz going on a cruise last year for the first time in twenty years, and it only took two really strong margaritas to do it so I know my tolerance is nothing like it was. When I was a youngster I got pretty hammered way too often.

I drink sometimes, although less so lately because of its nasty habit of causing hangovers and making me unable to think the next day. My drugs of choice have generally switched to kratom (still legal for now), phenibut, and a couple of not-yet-scheduled benzos that can be found online through the clearnet.

It occurs to me that the war on drugs is a war against a particular type of person. Not just poor people of color, although they are of course the main victims of the drug war in practice. But, to a great extent, it is a war on the sort of person who finds perpetual sobriety intolerable and needs something to enhance their experience of life and take them out of the sober mindset sometimes. Alcohol is legally tolerated, but it's kind of crappy relative to many of the alternatives that are out there. Still, anyone who needs to not always be sober is left with alcohol as the only legal, socially acceptable, and well-known drug, so they turn to it.

I am a total non-drinker. Both my parents were alcoholics, and I'm honestly afraid to risk finding out if I have that risk myself.

I've got too many other issues going on to risk something that would destroy my life and my remaining cat's life.

I drink regularly not heavily. Like 4-5 nights a week, one or two beers. I prefer euro style lagers or weizen like Heineken and grolsch or hogarden and paulaner. Cus when you're just having a beer or two you can splurge and you need something over 5% to get a nice feel.

Hangovers definitely got bad once I got over 25. If I'm at a party and going to polish off a 6 pack of miller lite or more the trick is water. Drink at a 1:2 ratio meaning a full glass of water every two beers. You'll pee like crazy all night but not be that hungover if at all. And stay hydrated all day as well. It's hard to catch up if you start drinking while already dehydrated.

The driving thing does suck so I'll limit myself to two drinks or one every two hours or so. Like if party is from 6-11pm I can do three. I'm pretty careful about it. Most of the time though I drink at home watching tv. Some people say that seems weird and destructive but I like to relax that way.

I don't think it affects my health that much. I'm overweight cus I eat poorly and too much. Id clean that up before giving up alcohol. Think about it, two non lite beers is around 200-300 calories. An ounce of potato chips is 150 and who eats just one ounce? So yeah I know what the real culprit is.

It's also easy to forget that nicotine is a strong drug. I hit substitutes pretty hard, ones I never need(ed) when stepping outside for 2-3 minutes of every 60.

Drinks that "girls drink" taste better. But watch out! They tend to be lethal. Long Island Ice Teas, Margaritas, etc. Trying to think of a legitimately delicious "dude drink." White Russian, maybe?

Maybe don't drink so much so that you get drunk and have a hangover the next morning? Drinking doesn't always have to be you pounding back 17 beers one right after the other.

I don't drink to get drunk anymore and I haven't in a while. That's kind of boring for me, you know? I drink to enjoy the taste, to relax a bit after work, to have a nice glass of beer or wine with dinner, to just sit back in my chair and sip on some vodka or whiskey, or whatever.

Sure, if my friends are over and we keep drinking, I'll eventually get buzzed. But.. Yeah, I can't remember the last time I had a hangover.

If each time you pick up a beer you end up drunk and with a hangover the next day, maybe you have a drinking problem. Not saying that you do, but if that's the case then quitting drinking completely might very well be a good idea.
