Dune Wars Art Thread

Do you know if anyone has ported just a normal space marine? I'd love to use that for something. Specifically, it's the backpack I'm intrerested in, I want to make a flamethrower soldier in power armour

also, it's not that DoW units have squat proportions, but rather, they're supposed to be massive. space marines are some 7-9 feet tall in the lore. of course they're going to look squat if you scale them down to normal human size. I reckon they'd look good if the width was scales so the armspans match, and let the height fall where it may. of course that creates rigging issues...

I can upload a Space Marine in NIF format if you want to have a go at rigging one to a vanilla animation. I don't think anyone's done one - the only DOW unit port I'm aware of is White Rabbit's Land Speeder.

Here's your space marine. All the different weapons and banner are separate meshes within the NIF. I have created Ultramarine textures, but it is straightforward to create the skins for any other chapter.

If you feel like contributing some art to Dune Wars at some stage that would be cool. :)

there seem to be lots of little holes in the mesh, and distortions. it looks like someone's tried to run a poly reducer script on it. did you do that?

I forgot the standard Civ 4 exporter from 3ds max generally mangles things, I went via another format to Blender and the mesh should now be without those holes.

Here's an art patch with new thopters. I have made the XML changes on top of the 1.5.4 patch and my 4th October patch. I have also fixed up the pedia air unit viewport so that everything now has a Dunish background. I've included the original hi-res textures for the thopters to help with reskinning.

Please make me list of icons you need, i am 2d Artist. Working in Corel. Icons is kinda ok for me to do (i wont promise too much on this stage, but if i have time i can help much more tha icons).

Great! There are a bunch of types of icons:

1. Units: In 1.5.2 deliverator has added a new set of consistent icons, and I added a few for the great people units in 1.5.4. So I think the unit icons are great now.

2. Tech: the current tech icons are good, although some of the images are indistinct at a 32x32 size. Many of them look like some small dark object on an orange background. If you find some you would like to improve, that would be OK.

3. Promotions: Lord Tirian had volunteered to do a consistent set of promotion icons. I am not sure if he started yet. There are a few where the level 2 icon is just a copy of the level 1 icon, so this could definitely use some work.

4. Religion: Some work would be helpful. The main thing is to put the imperial five point star icon and the landsraad yellow/red/black icon into gamefonts. I am not sure if you have worked with the gamefonts files. It is a big pain. I have done it successfully before, but I failed this time. That would be one small project.

5. Buildings. We have a real gap here, and we could really use some help. We can divide this into three parts:

5a. Basic buildings. I think the building art is OK, but a lot of the building icons are poor. I have tried to select the best ones out of what we have, but a lot of them could be redone. If you could help here, that would be great.

5b. Wonders. We plan to redesign the wonders altogether at some point. I wouldn't bother making icons yet.

5c. Religion buildings. First, we need to pick better building art. Then we need the icons. The icons are a little tricky to build. You need to overlay a small version of the religion icon itself onto the building icon. A good project would be to sort out the building art first, then make new icons.

In summary, one easy project is (4); a small important project is (5a); and a larger important project is (5c). Any help you could give would be great!

Great, i quite glad to see places where i can be helpfull.
I'll tell immidiately that i need some learning with programming and not good at it yet.
Cracking gamefonts will be bit pain for me b/c i dont know how to do that. Any tips will be appreciated.

So 2,3 > i will help where i find something i can contribute. Its really interesting and easy for me. I can propose some new concept for itcons. I dont like spy icons as they built now (handwritten letters), i like more clean logo style, or multi color bmp image.
4 > i'll start to learn about breaking into gamefonts it will take some time.
5 > i'll start with it doing it with some proj 2/3 additions. I feel more sure doing it, than 4, so it will be a start.

News!!!! I found how to do that, a(project 4) and i am trying to inject missing icons of religions.
Please if anyone find missing gamefont icon (white circle with number in game), please notify me here. Thanks, As for now 102 - Landsraad and 21 Spice, i am sure i dont know all missing ones, so keep me informed , cheers, will do some delicate cutting/drawing of pixels and will post gamefont files here.

We can definitely use some 2D art skills, in particular I am not that great at texturing units so if you fancy doing some of that then I can definitely find some things for you to have a go at.

I found a problemm.... For resource 21 Spice i made eye icon which is working, but i dont know why, replacing icon 102 with correct wont work. I still getting 102 number. :( But i glad i made already some results.

other thing that the issue is very easy to fix through code - and Landsraad icon should be 19 (its exist already) and not 102. Can you fix that?

Another question someone knows which format preffered to save those tgas - enchanced or normal?

I definitely like to texture things with good UV-wrapping. So if you have something to do, post some requests :D.

I want to make a flamethrower soldier in power armour

:O

certainly, please do. rigging units is something I'm quite capable of
Wow, you do?! I could provide some unanimated textured meshes because I like to model things but I tried to rig only once and it worked but it was for a different game and I've made my own skeleton, so I don't know how to rig models to Civ4 skeletons (I mean, haven't dug into it) :).

Sucess :D
later i will remove few white almost invisible pixels, but it worked!!!!!

Well, done Slvynn!

While I remember, there is another gamefont issue. We have changed food into water in this mod, but there are a few bread icons left in the gamefonts. One is the bread with a bite taken out of it that represents food consumed. So we need a water consumed replacement. The best idea I have is a stylised head drinking a water drop like this:

attachment.php

There is all a red coloured bread icon just to the left of the bread with a bite in the gamefont. That needs replacing with a red water drop.

Yep seems just color change will suffice.... and will be more clear ...

Another idea is just to add some figure like unhappy (not face, red man) , change color to whatever , and below his head should be blue or grey drop.

A grey drop for water consumed would probably do fine.

I'm doing a fully team colored, power armoured flamethrower unit right now. Then probably one with a machine gun too. I'm mostly basing things on the space marine. Adding teamcolor to this texture is harder work than it would seem.

hmm. Maybe, not sure. What is it that you need done? I'm not sureI can spare the time for taking on anymore projects at the moment.
