Dune Wars

If you turn on all the logging/debuging optiosn in the .ini file, you can see with a key combination (which i forgot) and hovering over the tiles, which improvement the AI wants to build there.
That might be easier than guessing.

Hi EveryBody!

I am absolutly rookie on CivFan. I would like to play modpacks especially Frank Herberts Dune modpack, I downloaded it, run, but I was unable to play with.

What are the steps to the success? If possilbe write to me as if I were a complete stupid. (naturally I not, but want to play with.

Other:

I have the Civ4 Complete (Base, Warlords, BTS).

How can I see my Civ4's versionnumber? Every part has a different versionnumber and must be updated by separetly or together?

The latest patch is the 3.19 as I know.

What is the update-line to reach 3.19? Is somewhere website which contains the patches simply one after the other without mods, skins, etc. Just purely the main patches?

Hi Vilagura, welcome to the forums.

To view your installed version, in the Civ4 main menu go into "advanced", and then "about this build".

Steps for installing the mod are:
1. Install Civ4.
2. Install BtS expansion.
3. Upgrade to BTS patch 3.19. You can download the patch from: http://www.firaxis.com/downloads/Patch/Civ4BeyondTheSwordPatch3.19.exe
I think its an all-in one (3.19 contains previous patches).
It can be better to download manually; some versions of Civ seem to have difficulty with the automatic update process.

4. Download Dunewars main mod file, version 1.7. Install it.
Hopefully this will work!

5. You can then download and install the Dune Wars 1.7.1 patch, and the Dune Wars optional music pack.

If you let us know exactly what happens when you try to run the Dune Wars mod, it can help to diagnose the problem more precisely.

Best of luck!

(Religion + inquisition, continued)
(See: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8824590&postcount=421)

I had another thought.

Maybe Temples should be destroyed if that city loses the religion it is attached to, but cathedrals (if they have been constructed) do not.
This achieves both design goals; there is a penalty for losing the religion, but that penalty isn't too large. Cathedrals are expensive, temples are not - and temples can easily be rebuilt if the religion is restored to the city.

This seems like a good compromise to me.

Hi to all,
i am here just to congratulate for this great mod.

Also i have discovered something, it does not work with the game's langauge set to spanish, the mod loads, but when creating game it crashes

Hi Tzenchor! Welcome to the forums. Really glad that you enjoy the mod.

I think that this mod, like nearly all others, is only designed to work optimally for the game's language set to English.

Thanks for the feedback. I have tried to make sure that all of the Dune Wars text is filled in for all the languages, even if it is just a copy of the English text. Just to make sure, I have used the 1.7.1 version, set the language to Spanish, and started a game. On my machine, it starts correctly and I can play.

Does the mod work correctly for you when the language is set to English?

Is it possible that you are using the older 3.17 version of BTS, rather than the newer 3.19 version?

Ordos chem trooper UU should not require nitrates.
It is not uncommon to have no nitrates in the early game, its a shame to lose out on a UU because of that.

I have all updates installed, BTS 3.19 and dune wars 1.7.1, but it is still crashing.
Perhaps it could be because i am using win7 64bits?

I don't think we have any other users of the windows 7 64-bit platform yet, at least none I know of. Are you able to run other large mods you download from this site, such as Fall From Heaven? If so, then I don't think the platform is the problem.

It may be that a native non-English installation is the problem. The installer is supposed to create a directory, "My Documents\My Games\Beyond The Sword\Dune Wars\UserSettings", and write a bunch of ini files there. On your system, I suppose the exact name of "My Documents" and "My Games" will be different. Does this directory "Dune Wars\UserSettings" exist somewhere in your local My Games directory? One of the mods which is inside Dune Wars is called BUG, "BTS Unaltered Gameplay", and that has had some issues reported before with non-English characters. We fixed one instance of this in 1.7.1 but possibly there are other instances of the same problem.

I have only tried the mods that come with the game
"Dune wars\UserSettings" is in "%userprofile%\documents\my games\Beyond the Sword"

Since windows vista every system directory has its name in spanish, but when you use the console you have to use english names, for example while in explorer i see "c:\usuarios\nameofuser\mis documentos" in the console i will see "c:\users\nameofuser\documents"

update:
I think the problem is related to the map size, if i use one of the smallest ones i can begin to play, but if i wish to use huge or mammoth sizes it crashes.
Note that the game i am playing in english is of mammoth size

I am going to guess that the problem has to do with accented characters in pathnames. This is a guess. Could you try one experiment? Please download and install the "BUG Mod" and see if this also crashes for you.

The main page of BUG is at this link. It will send you one or two links to a download page. I believe this will also crash, in which case we will ask the BUG development team for help.

EDIT: I missed your update. It may be that your machine does not have enough memory for mammoth type games. I am not sure there is any solution (except for buying more memory :-). How much memory does your machine have?

i haven't got any accented character in the paths to my documents or to game files

i'll give it a try soon

4 GB, but as i said i ever had problems with huge maps and with the game in english i am playing in a mammoth map

That is odd. You have found that the game requires more memory to play in Spanish. I cannot think of any reason for that. Still, you are able to play, so perhaps it is OK.

This is a bit surprising:
The problem occurs when i launch the game via the desktop link your installer created, if i run the standard BTS and from it launch the mod i can create the game without problems using mammoth size with land percentage and landmass outer region at maximum

By the way, i run bug mod without any problem

one question about gameplay, why suspensor units like the gunboat can't attack ground units or cities at all?

This is also reported by AnotherPacifist in this post, point 2. This is definitely not intentional and I think this was working correctly in the 1.6.x and previous versions. Something may have gone wrong in the 1.7 porting work. I will try to investigate and see what may be wrong.

Some observations:
1. When a tile has been terraformed to have open water, you cannot change the improvement that's already built on it.
2. Thorpters have a promotion against guardsmen, but cannot attack cities (which is a total waste since guardsmen are rarely outside cities except for Laza Tigers)
3. The city manager is really screwed up. A lot of times it will actually avoid growth (to the point of starving) to work desert tiles. And the big money bag associated with a town is no more profitable than a desert tile sometimes, while a priest seems to give as much money as a town.

Note that on point 2 he is speaking about thopters, not suspensor units, today i'll look to build an attack thopter to check if that is still corrected
