Just spotted this in my RSS feed. Atari to bring 4e to the computer in Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale.

Authentic D&D Experience

From wikipedia article:

"Players cannot create characters and instead select from one of four predetermined race, class and gender combinations: dwarf battle-priest, elf rogue, halfling mage or human fighter."

"character progression advances as per a limited set of 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons rules for both class and race"

"Further customization is achieved through loot and equipment drops. Character level advancement is currently limited to level 10."

Sounds like hack and slash with "Dungeons and Dragons"'s name tacked on top of it.

I do like Hack and slash/loot collecting games. But if you're gonna make a D&D game... Make a real one please.

The sh*ttiest version of D&D with the sh*ttiest publisher ?
That's one thing I'll not even try.

4E is cool, just don't feed me that essentials crap

4E is a steaming pile of dung. It's nothing RPG, and everything action game - just seeing how little actual text and roleplay there is in the book already gives a hint.

I guess they made it to fit a later adaptation for a MMO or a Diablo clone, or perhaps they just didn't got what "ADD" meant in the previous versions of the franchise and thought it refered to the target audience, but it's been one of the most worthless purchase I've ever made.

I stopped reading here because you are a troll. You can play any version of DND as an action game, but when you play everyone RPs. Don't feed me this it's not an RPG bull. I play with a group of RPers in 4e and 3.5, the RPing is the same, the combat is different. Reading the rest of your post I understand that you think RPing comes from the book, and have no idea how a DM is supposed to present a setting to his players. Thanks for proving you are ill informed of how RPGs work.

Eh, 4e is a bit hard to defend... But it's not so bad. I play it these days and it's fine. It's maybe more of a wargame than it used to be, but the level to which you let this affect the actual roleplay remains in the hands of the people around the table. I like it for what it is. I play other RPGs too (like GURPS). 4e has its place. I like the geekiness of all the structured classes, paragon paths, builds, epic destinies, you know, the building blocks of characters. I can clearly picture various types of fighters in my head just from all the options. It's a lot more structured and video-game-ish indeed, but eh, it's better than video-games that try to reproduce this feel.

4E reduced options, but mostly it got rid the really bad options and the options that needed to be beaten to death with a nerfbat.

4E is great for people jumping into the game for the first time

So, if the DM and all the player wants to RP, they can. WOW THAT'S A SURPRISE, SHERLOCK ! I mean, it's not like if roleplaying was first and foremost how people attempt to play like if they were their character. I mean, "role-play", it's exactly what the word mean, breaking news.

Now, after this Captain Obvious answer, the point that you obviously (purposedly ?) missed : yes you CAN roleplay and still use 4E. Like you can roleplay with Diablo rules if you really want, or no rules at all. But if you're going to use some published rules, why not use actually adequate ones ? I mean, you can also cut your meat with a chainsaw, it works. It's still a bad tool to use for this.

4E rules are VERY OBVIOUSLY not made with roleplaying in mind, but only with battle mechanisms. There is practically nothing beside fighting in the rules. Skills, levels and the like are gutted, and more than half of the player's handbook is just a stale list of attacks doing X times the weapon damage and moving figures on a tableboard of Y square. Skills are gutted, everything has been dumbed down to make place for fighting, fighting and more fighting.
Everything revolves around combat and everything is tailored about it. Even the DM guide is for the large part about encounter, level scaling and fighting set pieces.
It honestly looks, feels and plays like WoW, to the point of plagiarism.

I'm not even talking about how they removed or vandalized every piece of D&D lore. The only thing that is left is the brand name, and it's probably the only reason why they kept it to be honest.

Roleplaying in 4E is made DESPITE the rules, not BECAUSE of them, and using 4E to roleplay is just making your life harder by using the wrong tool. Or maybe your notion of roleplaying is just a long string of combats and sharing experience points.

What's an example of something you would have included in the game rules when it comes to address roleplaying (versus roll-playing)?

Because combat is the bulk of the rules. Everything else is for RPing or skill checks. Which are still in the game. Don't come in here trolling without knowledge of how an RPG works.

Explain what you mean right here. The rules are aimed at explaining the combat mechanisms, not on telling you how to RP. The opening pages of the books explain this to you if you could read.

Oh yeah, because you're certainly an authority on how RPG work, for sure

And I like how "everything else is for RPing". Yeah, the whole ten percents that aren't just bland tables of fighting moves.

Yeah, thanks for proving my point :

"It's nothing RPG, and everything action game"

Wonder who's the one who can't read here, because that's exactly why D&D 4 is crappy, it's just a battle rule set, and not a role-playing one.
(and if you're going to make some smartass answer about how you don't need rules to roleplay, I'll refer you to the post you're supposed to answer, because this is already pointed at it here)

I'm not an expert of RPG games, but are you in need of a chapter on improvisational acting or how to create a dramatic character background and personality?

Nope. You, on the other hand, definitely need to learn how to read, because the explanation is right in the two bloody first paragraphs.

The first two paragraphs contain primarily ranting and don't really explain anything. So the 4e rules focus heavily on combat, but that shouldn't be a problem if there are no rules needed for the RP. Besides, RP is boring, nobody really cares they just want to the loot and killing baddies anyway (EDIT: (mostly) kidding of course).
