Earth 18 Civs: Triumvirate Uprising PBEM

... Germany Russia + japan or americas was my strategy, but I didnt get 6th pick fast enough. Nice to see I'm not the only one who considered it.

So I'm not crazy. The land isn't very luxurious but there's a lot of it. And trees.

It's quikboy's turn to pick a European and near European civilization.

You know, this is looking like it's gonna be an awesome game. It'll be interesting just trying to put together a clear international picture. This map has a lot of geographical and political barriers since open borders won't be as free as they are with most AI. I already have a dream that I send Joan of Arc and her Samurai to Mexico.

Maybe I am crazy. :crazyeye:

Your picks have been recorded... Quikboy, you are up!

PS - go back and check the first post anytime you want to see the breakdown, the draft and civ selections are being updated after each selection...

And in response to the comments - yes it will definitely be interesting... I saw the strategy coming of trying to get civs which are next to each other, which is why I attempted to break everything down as best I could to keep your civs far apart, as well as set it up so its hard to get multiple power civs... but theres only so much you can do with the crowding in Europe and surrounding areas. We already see the Russo-German powerhouse about to be built, and the Greco-Egyptian bloc which will connect easily. There are definitely certain choke points in the map causing natural borders and either the land is nice, but you are squeezed, or its open and free but not nearly as nice. The politics of this game will DEFINITELY get interesting I can see already! The American continents will be pretty open and quiet for a while... but starting in Europe and expanding quickly, we will be jumping right into international diplomacy, this is exciting! Lets hurry it up Quikboy, we all want to get started!!!

This is going to be awesome...

I didn't even thhink about firing up the map to check out positions! Will be doing that before my draft but I think you made a good call splitting everyone up! Has anyone done this kind of game before with three civss each?

I have one game I'm in that its 4 humans with 3 civs each and a bunch of AI on a "larger than huge" map (its a modded game)... but its still in the early going and its a random map, so i dont know how or where my civs get connected.

I'm also in the "Earth 2010" game which is an earth map based on the world as of 2010... I'm the muslim bloc, 6 civs, all relatively near each other. That one is very early though, I've only done one turn.

I imagine it will get interesting though... obviously your 3 civs are almost on a team, except tech trading is completely off, so you can't tech them as a team, only exchange and gifts units and stuff... but you will need to have them work together... although local politics vs international (especially for the far east/far west civs) will be tricky, and if you piss off a neighbor in europe with an invasion, you could feel it when a different civ under the same player attacks you in the americas!

I would defintiely suggest everyone to open up and do some practicing with the "Earth 18 civs" scenario (its a BTS out of the box scenario) to get an idea of the lay of the land, starting positions, etc. Its a pretty common scenario, and with this access, everyone can see the entire map at any time through their own single player games (which is fair because we can all do it). There are definitely some tips and tricks to this scenario for certain civs... but yes I did my best to try and separate everyone as much as possible and break the world into pieces. It should be relatively "fair and balanced" and will be a challenge. Europe is a microcosm of the whole game. all 6 of us will be squeezed on the relatively tiny European mainland and be forced to figure it out... but wars and things that happen in Europe will have consquences in the rest of the world!

Jon the Gun - its your pick.

Also an FYI to everyone - rather than take even MORE time to get started to have everyone select starting techs, when I created the worldbuilder save just now, I just went and added a third worker tech to each civ - pretty much either mining or agriculture for most - based on the tiles around where you start (ie. whichever would be most useful to you)... So every civ starts with:

1 settler
1 worker
1 scout
2 warriors

plus your original starting techs +1 extra tech - agri or mining.

That should be enough of a little advanced start to get us moving along faster and more to do other than just moving a scout around for 10 turns.

Now once we are done the draft I have to go through the process of getting the turn order... in order... and then we will launch. If Jon gets back to us tomorrow, we might be able to launch tomorrow night...

Yes, it look like my three civilizations need a triple dose of agriculture.

And to my surprise I just noticed my german leader is Frederick not Bismark. So my leaders are pretty well rounded trait wise.

By the way did you have to remove all of the goody huts on the map? I tried a custom scenario and disabled huts yet they're still there. Scenarios might be funny that way so in case you need to delete them manually I've counted them. 6 on the Americas mainland + 1 on Cuba. 6 on Africa. 7 on Europe, Finland and the UK. 4 in the middle east (before India). 8 in Southeast Asia (including Japan and one real sneaky one on an island south of Vietnam). 2 on Australia. 2 in Russia. 1 on Easter Island in the Pacific, lol. Pesky things. That's 38 total.

Sorry... I thought the quick reply was submitted yesterday. I think I may go for France because... I have to ;) and then the mighty China. If any of you research the internet then China will research an alternate version!!!

no problem Jon - your picks are recorded.

I need to do some quick research and then will announce my picks and what Eclipse is left with.

Re: huts - I did not know that. I have noticed them on the map. I'll try my best to get in and delete them all before we start. Thanks for the update.

I need to go in and mess with the python code in order to change the turn order. I've set up the starts and set up the turn order on a spreadsheet, so once I do tests and get the code together we will launch - probably either tonight or tomorrow, definitely by the end of the weekend.

OK its official. I will choose the Incans and the Mali. Eclipse is left with the Mongols and India.

I will try to get this started asap and get the first turn out. When we launch I will send a mass email to everyone as well as post on this thread. GOod job drafting and good luck to all!

Ok - so quick update. I attempted to delete the goodie huts, but I am not that good with worldbuilder and it was deleting more than just the huts... everything on the tile, including resources, trees, etc.

So rather than go through the monotanous task of deleting all the huts and then trying to rebuild the other stuff... I'm just going to leave it as is. There is a chance I can still select "no huts" and they will go away, but theres a chance they might still be there... either way, its left to the civ gods to determine it, so start praying!

Hello everyone! We have finished the draft, I have spent an hour working the Python code and running some tests and we are set to launch "Earth 18 Civs: Triumvirate Uprising"!!!!

A few thoughts as we begin... First of all, the main discussion of the game, including notification of "GPS" (Gotten, Played, Sent) should be kept to this game thread. All game related discussions and open diplomacy should be kept to the thread. The email I sent out is simply a fall-back position for all of us in order to keep in touch should it be necessary, including the private info of all of our emails. Private diplomacy should be kept to personal emails and PM's.

Secondly, as I noted above, I attempted to go through and delete the goodie huts, however I am very much a rookie when it comes to Worldbuilder, so when I attempted to do it, it also deleted the land it was on... ie. trees and any resources. So rather than deal with that mess, we have a new setting - goodie huts are on! May the civ gods bless you... but at least random events are still off.

Thirdly - I did a test run through the first round of turns, and everything seems in order except for one problem - for some reason, each civ randomly has contact with 2 or 3 other civs right off the bat, even though they may be completely on the other side of the world. It has something to do with me messing with the XML/Python code, when I changed the turn order, I also had to change where your units started (ie. had to move them back to where they should be) and within that code there were things going on related to what parts of the map the units could see, etc. Like I said in the opening post, I am no expert on that, so I didnt want to mess around too much. As far as I'm concerned, contact with a few random civs will have minimal impact, since we will all meet eventually, and we can't exactly trade anything. A minor glitch in the game, my fault, but it seems relatively random and fair. Just be sure to check your espionage window once you build your first city so you aren't wasting points spying on a country on the other side of the world!

One hint for everyone in the interest of fairness - I have had a crush on this map/scenario since I started with BTS, so I've played many games with many civs and learned a few tricks of the trade with the map. Everyone should not be afraid to start a single player scenario, open up worldbuilder, and check out the lay of the land. It is based on real earth, however the specifics when it comes to resources is considered common knowledge. This is fair game for everyone.

One last hint to those who are "Earth 18" newbies... for many civs, settling in place is not necessarily the best option for your first city. Just sayin...

Everyone's emails were included in the launch email and the turn order is included in the first post and below. Remember - you have THREE (3) civs to play for each time you get an email. Go through all 3 of your civs before sending to the next player.

There may be some bumps in the road as we get started... but cross your fingers and hope for the best. And most of all - HAVE FUN!

Started already? Cool, I did miss it yesterday sorry. GPS'd to inky.

A bit annoyed though, some of my civs have the wrong starting techs. My japs got off okay with agriculture, hunting and mining so I don't think they're affect at all long term, maybe even a little better off. My Russians though oh no, I have Spain's techs. Fishing and Mysticism with mining, I was in no way expecting that. That'll delay chariots by a lot.
