Earth challenge (huge size)

I'm just curious as to everyones play time on this map?

The game I quit was about 8+ hours of play time.

The turns started to get to about 10 seconds+ ( for the AI to move ). In my opinion once you get to that stage it's no longer fun, one reason I don't play huge maps.

I just upgraded my comp, so the waiting times between turns isn't too bad in the late eras (2 sec max) but the game, due to the size of the map and epic, took a ridiculous amount of time to finish for me. Not sure what is was, but it was over 10 hours.

I'm working on Immortal Khmer. It's currently around BC 1300 and I have The Great Lighthouse and settled Japan.
Btw, I settled my capital on the sugar tile for the extra food and extra seafood.

Well, zbgayumn posted a few pages ago a game of 35h.

My game was 14h even with all the time saving tricks. It was mostly 'waiting for other civilizations' in the late game.

What spec is your new set-up?

I'm on quad core, think 2.3 for each core, but I still get bad lag towards end-game.

Agreed. I just started a Rome game, where I stole 2 of Cathy's workers. As I was doing that, a barb uprising happened, and a nice stick of I believe 7 archers popped near her capital. She defended against it, but that + my worker steals really hampered her in my current game.

In my let's play sitting bull got wiped out on turn 37. My less informed viewers guessed montezuma, but the AI is scripted not to declare until it has offensive units (IE horse or iron or at least jags for monty)...none of which he'd have had, built, and used to kill by turn 37. Almost certainly, sitting bull died to 6 barb archers next to his capitol on t36; a guaranteed instant kill to anybody playing the game reasonably.

Will I still win that map? Probably. Will it affect my finish time or the finish time for people in other games where it happens? Almost certainly...and to what good?

Uploading Immortal Shaka:

Ooooh, dual let's plays of the exact same start/difficulty!

Unfortunately, your happenings in your offscreen game as aztec happened in my on-screen version of zulu.

Difficulty scaling will make the top scorer almost impossible on deity as opposed to immortal...top hall of fame scorers usually just milk sid's sushi heavily anyway.

617 Beakers at 100%. Would have been much better with Rep... (I lost Pyramids to Ramses some millennia ago)

I finished Great Library and Parthenon, and I'm going to get Sistine in 13 turns. Freebie GA started a Golden Age and I starved my cities for GS which were used to double bulb Education. 13 peaceful cities by 115 AD isn't too bad. Maybe I should try an Elepult war against Indian or China sometime...

Does that mean you expect the top scoring results to be on Immortal rather than Deity difficulty level?
If so I might just start a new game on Immortal (maybe as Egypt) as without tech trading I'm starting to worry about how slow my research is. Currently playing a Deity game as Russia. In 1525BC I have only researched 3 techs (soon to be 4). I have 7 cities (soon to be 8), but it's going to be a long slow game.

How the heck have you "upgraded" your comp to this extent? I have a dual core 3.0 ghz processor, 4 gb ram, and a 1 gb graphics card. I'm almost certain the between-turn times are processing cycle limited on my machine, but even then between-turns in the 1300's to 1400's AD vary from 23-30 seconds (I pulled out a stop watch for it). That is, of course, unacceptable, as the vast majority of my turns are not that long.

Yea, the recommended system requirement is an absolute joke... it's clearly a problem with the game itself.

In any case, Earth maps tend to be fun until late when it slows down so badly. Pity; I'd play them more if it didn't

Finished a game less cheese than my first settler cultural vic. This time i went for a Roman Domination. Finished by 1555 AD

Especially the first cluster is interesting. Dcmort93 played a lot better with Rome than with the Vikings. In effect Rome is regarded as much easier than the Vikings and so alhimik and illram, who played as Rome, their scores are compensated to their disadvantage. :run:

Both Egypt and Rome currently have three games summitted. The scores are very similar. Yet Rome has a huge weighted score and Egypt is almost at the bottom of the standings. I'm just wondering why there is such a discrepancy.

I planning on starting a game on Immortal difficulty either as Egypt or Russia. My current game as Russia is going fine on Deity, but I'm only two hours in (1525BC) and I'm starting to feel that it's going to take forever. And TheMeInTeam's comment about the differences between Deity and Immortal levels makes sense. I'd prefer to play as Russia, but Egypt's current place is the standings make an Egypt game somewhat appealing as well.

You get the huge difference in weights because players do something irrational in this format (go for a different VC than massed military -----> domination).

Victory conditions do not yield balanced scores. Actually, the formula for high scores has been explored pretty heavily in civ IV; capture a tremendous amount of land, milk as much population as possible using sid's sushi (or on very land heavy maps, cereal mills but usually sushi is better), and try to win in the early 1000's AD with domination. That is the formula that has, on other maps, been used to get scores over 1 million and can easily beat 500000 on this map if someone has the patience for it.

Even max-speed space races by the best of the elite can't come close to that in score. I'd go so far as to throw non-domination games out when it comes to ranking the civs, or else stratify VC because frankly comparing a domination win to a culture win isn't reasonable.

Well, zbgayumn posted a few pages ago a game of 35h.

Yeah, and I'll probably have another one. I went down to Warlord difficulty in hopes of speeding up victory. But then I decided to be warlike, and that means slogging through constant unit movement.

Out of curiosity, has anyone looked at the feasibility of actually getting a Conquest victory? I started thinking I wanted to do it, but every way I look at it, it just seems impossibly difficult to keep destroying cities as the other civs move in (once your land area gets close to the domination win)

It might be possible once you reach the modern/future units. Better movement + aerial recon means you can keep track of the upstarts.

Hey Matrix would I be allowed to go and get a space race victory in that same Caesar game in stead of doing another full playthrough?

Rome is so high because dcmort93 played as Rome and Vikings and got a much higher score with Rome than with the Vikings.

Similarly, Kadazzle has played as India and Egypt and got a higher score with India.

@dcmort93: only Epic speed is mandatory. You can play in any way you like. :)

FYI, I'm moving home at the moment and am also quite busy at work this week, so it might take a while before I update the scores. So don't worry if you don't see your score in the list yet. I still keep a close eye on the results!
