Besides the extra 6 elite units exclusive to this collector's edition, which will be unlockable through steam, depending from which retailer you pre-order there are other additional in-game exclusive units. Besides the units you also get a special map with all the commercial sea routes.

If you preorder it from Play.com you get the USS Constitution. If you pre-order it from Game you get Prussian Death Hussars, if you pre-order it from Bol.com you get etc.

In a time when a soldier’s life could be given easily and quickly, it took extreme courage and determination for a true hero to forge a reputation for themselves. Whether through harsh and highly disciplined training, generations of successful military tradition or world-leading technology, the units available as part of the Empire: Total War Special Forces Edition are among the very best of the best.

The Special Forces Edition introduces six of the most influential military forces of the 18th Century. True to the period, these exclusive elite units become available on the campaign map via a certain faction or once a specific geographical region is under control.

The Empire: Total War Special Forces Edition also includes a beautifully illustrated version of the Campaign map, showing all three theatres of war (America, Europe and India) and their connecting, highly prized trade routes.

Special Forces Units

The following elite units are included as part of the Empire: Total War Special Forces Edition. This premium packaged edition for aficionados of the Total War series comes complete with a unique Steam unlock code. Once the game is installed and verified by Steam, players can enter their code and unlock these elite units which will then appear in the single player game.

HMS Victory - The Royal Navy’s most distinguished and formidable first rate ship of the line; Lord Nelson’s 104 gun flagship is one of the most heavily armed ships of the 18th Century.

Rogers’ Rangers - Major Robert Rogers’ company of rangers are highly trained elite light infantry, specialising in reconnaissance and special operations. They are extremely mobile in even the most challenging environments.

Ottoman Organ Gun - A viciously powerful field gun, able to inflict incredible damage on the opposing army. Emphatic proof of the Ottoman Empire’s advanced knowledge of gunpowder and firearms technology.

Ghoorkas - "Better to die than be a coward" has been the motto of these elite Nepalese soldiers for centuries. Disciplined, tough and courageous, they carry a deadly 18-inch long, curved knife known as the kukri.

Corso Terrestre Guerillas
- An independent light infantry guerrilla regiment, experienced in skirmish and stealth tactics. Surprise raids and ambushes are the guerillas’ favoured tactics, a way to compensate for their limited number and light armour.

Bulkeley's Regiment - A French unit of Irish mercenaries with a fearsome reputation for hardiness. Exceptionally tough and resilient, they make for a highly flexible and dependable regiment.

Sounds cool, I plan on getting this game. I am becoming a true fan of the series!:p The ottoman organ gun sounds the tightest. However in AoE3 the organ gun belonged uniquely Portuguese. Which game was wrong, or rather were there variants in each nation?

Why? Why do you tempt me like this?!

Empire will NEVER run on my machine yet you must dangle enticing titbits before me like so many shiny forbidden fruits... I might just have to fork out you know. or :)? I can't decide.

Buy it!! You know you deserve a treat!

The easiest way to avoid temptation is falling into it. :yup:

Victory was nothing special, just another First-rate. I can think of a dozen other ships with substantially more guns than her. Victory is famous simply because it was the flagship of two repeatedly victorious admirals.

As you say, she was just one of many heavily armed ships of the time but the fact that she was, and still is famous makes her a pretty good choice imho. But what the hey; it's out of our hands. I agree that it's a little evil to split the extra units between different editions though.

Why are they making this a Steam-specific thing? Steam is a truly terrible client...:(

What?! Come on, that is a bit unfair. I use Steam all the time au contraire it is a wonderful client! You don't have to worry about disk, you can chat with friends, you can join groups, it is relatively reliable, and you log on anywhere (provided you have internet access of course). I LOVE Steam!

I use Steam about 16 hours out of the day. I mostly take issue with its incredibly slow load time, updates that induce crashes instead of fixing them, and refusal to shut down about half the time I try to do so. It's ridiculously buggy. And besides, a lot of non-Steam games, like Company of Heroes and Call of Duty 4 don't require a disk either. That said, since it's the only way I can play TF2 and CS:S, I use it a lot.

If you like groups so much, why don't you join the Civilization Fanatics' Forum group? Haven't seen you around there at all. :p

Ya, well I suppose that's true. However I have never noticed it being particularly buggy or any refusals to shut down? BTW my screen name is kibbles5724 (to many #'s I know:lol:).

Well my concern is if they put something in to stop people modding those units in. That could be disasterous for anyone trying to mod the gme.

Agreed.
That is just lame.

Yeah - have to agree there. Going to take a wait-and-see on this; they'll probably eventually release a complete edition with everything including this stuff on it. For now M2TW still has plenty of content for me.

Empire: Total War will ship with with nine different versions of box art, eight of which represent the major faction for the market the game is sold in, and one general international version. For instance, German customers are presented artwork displaying colours with the Prussian eagle and Prussian army uniforms, whilst the American artwork shows the American revolutionaries and the Betsy Ross flag.[22

It's kind of stupid how the General box art has the american flag, considering the US was not a major nation until the 1800s (or at least had little affect outside it's own little area). And if they release the US box for Canada I'm definately not buying it.

America is the biggest market so its not surprising. It could backfire quite a bit though as certain countries might not like getting the wrong box set like in your example above. Would Austrians want a Prussian boxset (There doesn't seem to be an Austrian one yet) and would nations like Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia prefer the general box set design or an Austrian one. No doubt some Scottish people will probably moan as well although the general boxset isn't exactly different.

Most people will ultimately not care though.

The boxes are supposed to be released in the country which has the flg on it, except the general one (but having the US flag on the general one still doesn't make sense). I'm not too wirried about having the boxes go to the rwrong countries in Europe, as I would be surprised if say, Portugal was given the Spanish version because that would probably be a costly mistake. I'm just worried about here in Canada because we almost always if not always get the US version of the game (why they don't usually call it North American annoys me), as I'd be offended if it was the american version.

EDIT: Empires will also be using Steam, wether or not you buy it on Steam or boxed. Pre-ordering on Steam will mean you get Rome: Total War Gold for free.

I'd wonder what they'd do for Canadian box art if they saw fit to make it....

Perhaps a Brit and a Frenchman trading insults with each other while an American watches them in the background

Sounds kinda kinky if you ask me...

Damn! I should have preordered this edition instead of just buying the normal version. It would have been cool to own this edition :(
