Enders Game 1: The Training Game Competition - Team 2

Shaesha: I am playing this game to learn. I read the commentary from our veteran player with regards to my turn. I will also skim through the thread at the other comments. I don't really care if you find the word "goddamn" offensive. It is a part of the meriam webster dictionary, and is therefor usable to me. It is used all over the world, and as a rule of thumb, if a teacher in school doesn't care if I use the word, and neither do my parents, it is ok to use. Are you one of those fundie creationist nutcases? If so, then this song characterises my feelings towards you, as well as my respect. http://mchawking.imarc.net/songs/FtheCreationists.mp3

Moderator Action: 1 week for trolling. Also, any type of vulgar language, or language that's offensive to some is disallowed.

Sirp: I am being civil. I do not use curses directed at other people. I consider that to be enough to have reasonable communications. If you find my being blunt offensive, then it is your perogative to remove me from your game. I say this without remorse, because a game in which I have to speak in PC-english or legaleese everytime i want to report on a few GD turns(oooo no! its that word again!) I have no desire to be a part of. Again, I fail to see how anything in the original report can be construed as uncivil. Cursing at a goddamn inanamate(sp?) object is inoffensive in my mind, and that is much how I was raised.

Smurf,

Nothing in that particular turn report was terribly offensive, however I think the offense taken is cumulative over various things you have said, in addition perhaps to what you might have said in different threads. My problems with what you said come largely in that you explicitly stated that you are not going to attempt to be particularly courteous.

You are obviously an intelligent person, 12 years old and already learning C++ according to your profile, not to mention already having acquired a great deal of skill in Civilization 3; a level of skill that many much older players may never achieve. It is unfortunate that you don't have the social skills that would complement this intelligence.

You have now moved on to the stage of making innuendos about others religious beliefs and being offensive about them. There is no reason why someone of any religious persuasion shouldn't be able to play this game and enjoy it without being insulted, offended, or subjected to taunts. Accusing someone of being a 'fundie creationist nutcase' steps into the realm of religious hatred in my opinion.

As such, Smurf is delisted from the roster. Stuck as a Mac can play the game from the save after my turn.

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.....

How about changing the subject? :D :D :D

What win condition are we going to go for? We not only have to beat this game, but beat Team 1 also! What's the best way of going about this so that it would be pretty obvious which team came out on top? I don't really want to "milk the game", because that can get tedious.

(And if a fifth person wants to jump in now, are they welcome to?)

Yes, changing the subject is a good idea :)

I think we want to go for a conquest victory, with cossacks. We want to get Education, build universities, and b-line to military tradition, then take everyone out. Sound good? :)

Cossacks are an underrated UU - think about it, they'll be the best attacker (sipahi excepted), best defender, and fastest mover in the world for a long time - until the advent of nationalism. Our aim of course, will be to ensure the game doesn't see nationalism, but I'm not sure if we'll be able to achieve that, since we're not exactly a science powerhouse yet. We'll see about that.

I'm not sure about a fifth player. I kinda like the team we've got I think. If a fifth person showed up and asked to play I would consider it.

I have had the most 'fun' winning by conquest. I'm not quite sure why :P But I would love to go that route :)

Maybe you just enjoy being violent? :)

Conquest (or Domination?) here we come!

I would love to play, but am no where near up to the standards being exhibited here, so I will just stay lurking and wish you all a good time :)

@Xion: If you have beaten Warlord level or better on your own, have not read the other thread sufficiently to see any spoiler information, and you are willing to be polite and courteous during the game, you are welcome to join. (I apologize if this latter condition seems somewhat condescending for me to mention, however in light of recent events I have decided that it is best mentioned clearly).

Stuck as a Mac: Could you please confirm you're playing? The game you're meant to play is here: The Game

(Yes this is before Smurf's turn, but I assume we won't be seeing his save file, since he's no longer playing).

Please read my notes at the end of my last turn, they include some rather important instructions :)

HOOOOOYAAAAAA! Cossacks!
(I've never actually played them much, so this should be educational)

It might as well be a traditional Russian victory.
Errr... Where on the tech tree is Vodka going to be discovered? [party]

I hope SaaM plays soon, our progress seems to have been seriously slowed down lately.

Thanks for the heads up pdescobar. Stuck as a Mac, play one of the files that pdescobar has referenced, if they work. Otherwise, play the save that I referenced in my last post.

I doubt that Smurf is going to email you the save any more.

Sirp, thanks for the offer, and no need to worry about condescending attitudes, I'm used to first person shooter forums mostly and when I found these it was shocking at how nice everyone is (exluding Smurf? ;))

However, I'm from the UK and do not have PTW and am on patch 1.29f of vanilla Civ3, so I'm afraid I can't join in even if I had the time to. But carry on the good work :)

Sorry if this is slightly off the subject, but I would like to know Sirp's feelings about Catapults at this stage (or earlier) of the game.

Totally useless?
Good in some situations?
A luxury unit you can't afford to have when playing Emporer or Diety?

Usually, I like to have 3 or 4 around during a Swordsman and Medieval Infantry war since they don't slow down the offensive. They can be used for protection from counterattacks, attacking the really tough nut cities, and wearing down units so your Elites have a better chance of GL generation (by attacking more often due to less healing between attacks hopefully.)

If a Horseman/Knight/Cavalry war their value is greatly diminished because they can rarely keep up with the advance. Since we are leaning towards a Cossacks main push here, I assume 'pults and Cannons are going to be non-builds?

I don't usually use catapults offensively, but I don't think it's an awful idea to do so. I generally prefer horsemen to swordsmen, and that is a major reason why. In this game though, there was jungle all around, which made swords a better choice. The jungle also cuts off catapults, unless you have roads through it, which is a large reason why we couldn't really use them.

If you are using swords, then yeah building some catapults is ok, and is a good way for a smaller city that can't afford to build a barracks in time for the war to contribute. The biggest advantage of catapults is to give yourself more of a chance of fighting off an archer attack on your swordsman. Catapult attacks on cities you're about to attack generally aren't terribly effective.

Catapults are incredibly useful if you're fighting alot of defensive wars. This is especially so in an Always War game, in which they are indispensable.

Cannons are rarely useful at all, because they come right before cavalry -- and there is just no good slow moving attack unit to be bothered with once cavalry comes along. (FWIW I think that cavalry is just a little too unbalancingly offensive).

Artillery are incredibly useful, because of their high power, range of 2, and combination with rails.

Im on my wireless mac now, but here is just a brief update.

Its T4, The Vikings are down to their last city. No GL yet and the FP has been built in Odessa. I went on a small renaming spree, just one city that we just captured to "A Lot of Vowels" and the city I will take next turn will be renamed "sneeze"

This has been a brief update. Just a question: Should I keep building up for an invasion of China?

Also- yea? What about 'pults?

Yes, we probably want to invade China. Have you been building the road down from Scandinavia to our western front that I suggested? If we can get MDIs down there quickly, just ten should be enough to capture Beijing and Shanghai, and cripple China in a handful of turns.

Don't bother with catapults at this late stage. The age of infantry is dwindling, and from now on we should only be building fast units. Our surplus stock of offensive infantry should be used up in a series of wars while we're waiting on cossacks, just like they are now. If we run out of MDIs and swords, then it's time to stop fighting until we get cossacks.

So, if you still have MDIs and swords left, which you should have, then yes go for China, but there shouldn't be a "buildup" required, other than the massing of existing forces for the invasion.

-Sirp.

Okay, I'm really going to reveal my ignorance here. :o
I've only played the Russians once, and that was a long time ago. Is there any pre-builds for Cossacks? I seem to remember you can't upgrade TO them - you have to build them fresh when you get Military Tradition. Is that right?

Did China build the Hanging Gardens yet, or did it get stolen from them?

Cossacks replace cavalry, and have the same upgrade path as cavalry. Chariot -> Horseman -> Knight -> Cossack.

Almost all unique units have the same upgrade path as the unit they replace, with a few exceptions like the Greek hoplites, which upgrade to musketmen instead of to pikemen, since hoplites have the same stats as pikemen and are cheaper.

Even units like samurai, which replace knights yet are not horse-based upgrade from horsemen and to cavalry.
