[BNW] Enjoyable Deity Games

MIDGE#1: Meet the happiest people on earth in the sauna
Nice, I’m going to try this one. I’ve wished that there were shared games with modded civs for awhile now. I’m kind of bored with the same ole ones all the time. I’d like modded civ opponents too. There are a lot of stable ones out there.

The first 99 games in the Enjoyable Deity Games Experience (EDGE) series are presented on page 25 in this thread. The newest additions after that are:

100. Germany (Pangaea, Standard speed, Standard size, Unmodded), CV challenge
101. Brazil (Pangaea, Standard speed, Standard size, Unmodded)
102. Austria (Pangaea, Standard speed, Standard size, Unmodded)

The new subseries MIDGE kicked off with:
1. Finland (Pangaea, Standard speed, Standard size, Otherwise unmodded but the civ to play is Hypereon´s Finland v. 4)

Ugh, I hate this game. Elusive 1st CV on deity still evades me. EDG 100 turn 335 loss.

No clue what else I could do, besides being more aggressive, but i keep seeing write ups from people who win CV's early, and I have no idea how it's done. Gonna retry england real quick, then see where I go.

How was your science output? Hitting Archeology around t170 is normally good enough for me to dig enough AS to secure a win. To me it sounds like you are doing everything right but that you are teching a little slowly. I would like better players to comment as well, because I would really like it, if you were to get your first CV.

You are welcome to contribute yourself or also make suggestions on modded civs. I found MIDGE#1 to be very stable but I wanted to report my findings, so that everybody gets a realistic understanding before they have to try it out themselves. As with BlackWizard, I will be very happy if you try it out.

Hi friend. Do you like Korea? You could make a game where you generate many great people and plant them all in your capital - Korea UA gives science + later with Hotel, Airport etc they will give a lot of tourism. Even Merchants are ok for this. I think I'll try this too since it's fun. Also cultural victory is helped by good science and Korea does that job well. You could go Tradition + Piety + Aesthetics full and also get many prophets if you can. If you also get a religion you're all set. Even generals can be used for both science and tourism, despite not being as good as other great people at this purpose. Edit - forgot to say you need to pass Historical Landmarks to get the culture from improvements, but it shouldn't be very hard I think.

Would anyone else be interested in a Victory Condition Challenge? I have long wanted to test Babylon's GS generation against Korea's science bonus for specialists.

Here's the general idea: Deity, Pangea, Standard Settings. For each VC we pick the top 8 civilizations. There will be one save for each of the top 2 and we see which tends to produce the faster finish time.

I am hoping you figure out the secret — and then teach me!

Have you tried for CV on one of the good Polynesia maps?

+1 for a Korean CV map.

I tried Edge 96 England. I'm on T155.

Spoiler :
Not sure I'll continue this one. France attacked early and now has Musketeers and is relentless. He got Musketeers super early, I didn't even have Pikes and was 5 or so techs from Muskets. Its been fun defending York from the French invasion but it takes 4 longbow shots to kill a Musketeer and this war is just going to make me fall further and further behind.

Here's a shot from T104. I almost lost Nottingham in the first War of French Aggression.
Spoiler Map T104 :
T104.jpg

We peaced out for awhile but then Napoleon plopped a city down right next to York. That was too much for the English people to bear. So Elizabeth had to attack to remove that blight from rightful English lands.
Spoiler Map T148 :
T148.jpg

I played a few more turns past that screenshot to T155 and that tricky Napoleon snuck a settler by me and re-built Marseilles in the same spot! I didn't realize that when I burnt down the first city it would take the Citrus and Bananas from me - so basically I wasted a Citadel earlier.

MIDGE#1: Meet the happiest people on earth in the sauna
Welcome to an EDGE subseries, which I decided to call MIDGE (Modded Interesting Deity Games Experience).
Playing this now. I have not much explored add-on civs at all.
Looks like it will be a CV where I take a few caps early.
Map is a bit bugged, as the AI is settling cities with only two hexes between them.

Where on the map did that happen? I didn´t notice anything like that myself.

EDGE#103: I will never be hungry again

This is a contribution by mbbcam, so all glory should be going to him for creating this. The task is to play as England on a Pangaea map with (I presume) Standard size and Standard speed. The map has been modded with RAS (Really Advanced Setup) and Acken´s minimalistic balance. I have not had the chance to try it myself but the start is very crazy and it might give you a fantastic possibility to grow your capital to an unimaginable size. Furthermore there is a hint that going East with your Worrior at the start might be a good way of collecting early workers for your growing empire. I am happy that mbbcam wanted to share this one and I hope you all will have a nice journey with good old England. Enjoy!

EDIT: For further information on Acken´s mod, please see mbbcam´s thread "England map".

While I am at it: next in my pipeline are the Celts and Rome and in the MIDGE series I am trying to get something going with the Papal States.

I might have had another mod loaded (Really Advance Setup) when I opened your map. I would not have expected that to have an effect though.

I really like this mod! Thanks! Good music! But I can’t move GW (from Sauna) to theme Oxford, so that is a bit annoying. Also Siam had a Rune Singer, so that was a surprise!

Any GP going in to a Sauna will be stuck there forever, which is a little annoying. Luckily one gets at least the cpt and tourism.

MIDGE#2: One day you will be the Pope

I enjoyed the first game in the subseries as Finland and decided to play another modded game. Those who like CV play will have a nice Merry Christmas with this one. The task in this special assignment is to play as the Papal States under the longest serving Pope, Pius IX, on a Pangaea map with Standard size and Standard speed. QC and QM are turned on and all VCs are enabled as usual. As raider suggested, I also included one modded AI, namely the double monarchy Austria-Hungary (chose Franz Joseph for his beard alone!) but the rest of the pack are well known to us. Other than that, the game does not include further mods. As in MIDGE#1 also here you can go in any direction you want but the designed VCs are CV or DipV. This map seems to be very well suited for peaceful play, but don´t hesitate to go on the offensive, if you like that better. In my game I got the first religion and it just snowballed in such a way that four of the AIs had to accept my religion as their own majoirty religion. I think that this game might be one of the easiest ways to get a Deity CV under your belt. I also uploaded pictures from t85 and from the win on t283 for you to enjoy and added also a view of the culture screen for you to have a look at the bonuses. It might be a little bit overpowered, but it was still very fun. I am sure you will enjoy this one!

Then to the technical description:
- You need two mods for this game: JFD´s The Papal States (v. 10), https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=80377476 and TarcisioCM´s Austria-Hungary (v. 1) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=526429245. Both mods are available in the Steam workshop.
- The UA is interesting to say the least: A. You start with 1 fpt instead of 1 cpt. (This more or less secures you the first pantheon but also forces you to build a monument very early on). B. Tourism is increased by 50% to civs that share your religion (This is huge once you get Itinerant Preachers) and C. You can buy Disciples (random Great Works) for faith.
- The UB is the Chapel which generates additional faith but also has a slot for Great Works.
- The UU is the Swiss Guard and it can only be bought for gold (or faith with the right reformation belief). After researching Radio these guys should be parked in the cities because they then generate +2 Tourism each.
- Austria-Hungary has an interesting UA: building a courthouse triggers a We love the King day in all cities, but at least in my game they did very well in all spheres, founding a religion of their own and also taking out their closest neighbour.

Since this is a modded civ, there might be some problems. The only one I found in my game was that the turn after you purchased a Disciple for faith (and assuming you would have enough faith to buy another), there will be a notification of that, but there will only be some code line instead of the text. On the whole, this mod seems to be working even better than the previous one.

There is a short recap of my game behind the spoiler.

Spoiler :

I moved to hill/river two tiles E to be next to the Salt. Then the BO was Scout-Monument-Granary-Settlerx3. I stole one worker from the Ottomans and then I milked Riga for 5-6 workers. I opened up Tradition first but then I went Liberty. I built the Oracle and reached a four city NC on t84 and immidiately settling a fifth city after that (as you can see from one of the screen shots). Then I used my GE from the Liberty finisher to rush Hanging Gardens and actually still managed to build Petra in the capital after that. I took a chance on Borobudur and got that as well. Extremely nice start and Education on t111 after some minor detours. First religion as stated above with EM/Tithe/Pagodas/+15%Production/Itinerant Preachers.

In the midgame, I built Sistine, Uffizi but Sweden beat me to LToP and England got GT. However, I already now had so many slots to fill that I only needed my five Museums to be all set here. I went for Industrialization first (t164) and only after that for Archeology (t180). I was the first to that tech and easily got some 11-12 AS. Sweden emerged as the bad boy teared the Ottomans to pieces and left them with two crappy tundra cities. My new friend Franz Joseph took out Babylon all together while Assyria had a lot of inconclusive wars with Venice, much thanks to the fact that they had to attack over a narrow piece of land since I did not sell open borders to them. England jumped on Sweden but that costed them a city or two when all was said and done. I was first to Ideologies and picked Order and Sweden and Austria-Hungary followed. England and Venice went Freedom, while Assyria were the only ones to try it with Authocracy. With only Hotels and the UA bonus, I was already generating some 250 Tourism per turn (after bonuses but still). It was also nice to have instant Coal and Aluminium when reaching the required techs.

In the endgame, I tried not to optimize too much, because it was just so fun!. Thus I first researched Airports and only after that teched my way to the Internet. It took me just four turns after reaching Internet to win the game and I didn´t have time to use my first regular GMu at all (he is inside the capital on t283). I used a couple of GMus that I bought for faith though. Looking back at the game, I think I had it in the bag more or less after being first to Archeology. I also had enough units to defend myself, if Sweden would have had any silly ideas. Luckily for them, they didn´t. This felt easy, maybe even too easy and I also deliberately didn´t take more than two points in Rationalism. However, maybe next game will be quite different. SP: full Liberty, Tradition 2, full Piety, full Aesthetics, Rationalism 2 and Order 5.

EDGE#104: The world is a dangerous place

Many of the recent games have been aiming at peaceful journeys. However, that is not the case here! The task is to play as the Celts on an unmodded Pangaea map with Standard size and Standard speed. QC and QM are turned on and all VCs are enabled as usual. I selected three opponents myself: England, Rome and the Zulus. The aim of the game is to win a DomV, alternatively any VC is okay as long as you have conquered the city of Rome. The romans were Boudiccas main enemy after all. The start is very nice and you should be able to expand peacefully to 4-5 cities. Prepare well and hit the road when you feel you are ready. As a hint, Shaka has a good starting position and seems to do well on this map. What could be better than that? Enjoy the mess you are going to create! There are also pictures from t90 and from the win on t306 for you to enjoy.

I played according to HOF rules but didn´t submit my win. There is a short recap of my game behind the spoiler.

Spoiler :

SIP and then the BO was Scoutx2-Shrine-Granary-Settlerx2. I stole one worker from Sweden and two from a CS. I got the first religion with EM/Tithe/Mosques/Pagodas/IP. Four city NC on t85 and I built Borobudur afterwards. I reached Education on t106 and was heading towards a CV. Shaka took out the Ottomans very early. Thankfully Denmark was no push over even for the Zulus.

In the midgame, I was able to build LToP, GT and the Uffizi. However Morocco was also doing well on the other end of Pangaea. Rome started to expand towards me and I bribed Shaka to attack them. Eventually I joined the fight and took three cities, including Rome, from Augustus. That left him with one city and he was of course more or less out of it. However, Shaka continued to expand and when he unprovoked stole some tiles with a GG, I had to throw my game plan out the window and go to war. This was the beginning of 100 turns of warfare against the Zulus. Shaka was strong and gave the rest of the world a fight all the way to the finishing line. I needed Cannons to take the first cities from him and Istanbul fell only to Artillery. I also liberated a couple of cities, so Suleiman rejoined the game but he was a hefty 49 techs behind the pace at the end of the game. I went Order and so did Denmark. England and Sweden took Freedom while Shaka and Morocco (!) went Authocracy.

In the endgame, I continued the war against the Zulus and eventually captured Ulundi with Rocket Artillery and Tanks. Since I already had Istanbul, Rome and Ulundi I figured that I keep going even if I also was teching nicely. Thus I declared war on Sweden, taking Stockholm easily before going for Copenhagen. After taking the danish capital I was very close to a SV as well. The choice was between taking London and Marrakech with XComs and Atomic bombs. I prepared for the final kill but just hit the laast tech a little faster. I won a SV on t306 and I would probably have needed some 10-12 turns to win a DomV. Very intense and fun game. Shaka at his prime is always a treat! SP: full Tradition, Piety opener, Liberty opener, Honor opener, Aestethics opener, Commerce 2, full Rationalism and Order 8.

MIDGE#3: The "saltiest" start ever?

After two really cool games, with Finland and the Papal States,I decided to try something slightly different. I wanted to try a modded civ with only small bonuses and thought that I chose wisely. In a way I was right, but the start was just too good...Here the task is to play as Hiram I of Phoenicia on an otherwise unmodded Continents map with Standard size and Standard speed. QC and QM are turned on and all VCs are enabled as usual. The starting position is fantastic: if you settle on t1, you might get a capital with six(!) Salt tiles in range. I also chose Assyria, Greece and Persia as opponents due to their geographical location and as conquerers of the Phoenician lands at some point in history, Increadably two of the other four AIs also fit the picture quite well. The map itself offers a surprise or two and I have rarely enjoyed a Continents map as much as this one! There will also be one or two really enjoyable surprises in the lands that are rightfully yours to claim. The phoenicians were the first to use an alphabet, in the meaning of having one letter per sound instead of symbols for entire words. This is definitely a good one. Enjoy! There are also pictures from t105 and from the win on t281 for you to enjoy.

Technical description:
- Sukritact´s Phoenician civilization (v. 2). Also this one is available in the Steam workshop. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=236552477
- The UA is that you get 5 gpt for every science beaker going out to another civ with a trade route (this will not generate much in the early stages but late in the game this felt a little too good to be honest).
- They have a very interesting unique GP, the Tyrian Merchant. You get one for free when Writing is researched. The unique thing with this one is, (while you can use them as regular Great Merchants) that they can perform a special CS trade mission that gives you two copies of Tyrian Dye, which is an unique luxury.
- The UU is a Bireme,an unimpressive Trireme replacement. They will, however, generate Great Merchant Points.

Remember that this is a modded civ and that there might be some problems. However, I didn´t find any problem all game long.

Here is a short recap of my game:

Spoiler :

I moved north on the coastal hill and got "the shock of a lifetime". I had six tiles of Salt in range of my capital and also one tile with Gold and some nice bonus resources! BO: Scoutx2-Settler-Granary-Settler. First expand to the N for Uluru and second to the W on the Gems. I was short on happiness with only three luxuries for three cities but luckily I got a fourth from my Great Merchant. Even with Uluru I only got fourth religion (EM/Tithe/Pagodas/Plowshares/Itinerant Preachers). I needed sailing to find Alex and Assyria since Darius was blocking the way. Really interesting coincidence that all the AIs I selected myself ended up on the same continent with me! 3 city NC on t90 but I built both Oracle and Great Lighthouse before that. Education on t110 and shortly afterwards I founded a fourth city, south of Byblos. Assyria and Greece were fighting constantly, while Darius and I had peaceful times.

In the midgame I wanted to get some of the cultural wonders and... well I first built Sistine, then I started on LToP but Gandhi beat me to it. I still tried for Globe and managed to hard build it. Then I went for Uffizi and got that as well! To round off, I even built Louvre. Crazy stuff! Coal was no problem and I actually got to Industrialization before going for Archeology. I had open borders with everybody and stole one AS from each AI (two from Gandhi). I managed to fill all slots eventually. I was first to Ideologies and went Freedom. Gandhi and Persia followed. Alex and Genghis went Authocracy, while the Incas and Babylon believed in Order. At this stage Alex took out Assyria and got himself involved in many lengthy wars against the other AIs. My income was extremely good and I purchased three Universities, two Factories, three Public Schools and two Research labs. Late in the game I also instantly bought four Airports when getting the tech for them. Mongolia had several unconclusive wars with the Incas and Babylon.

In the endgame, I focused on getting to Internet before International games. To my surprise I was also able to win the IG, thus just ending the game in a few turns after this. I didn´t go to war all game and Greece and Babylon were the only AIs with culture enough to postpone my win even slightly. Two turns before the end I founded a fifth city and gave it to Babylon. Surprisingly he declined open borders and I had to declare war to get my one GMu into his borders. That was enough for a resounding victory on t281. SP: full Tradition, full Piety, full Aesthetics, Exploration opener, full Rationalism and Freedom 6.

Would you like to include them in the EDGE series? That is all right with me. We could do Babylon as #105 through to #108. Which civs do you have in mind as opponents? And could you take upon yourself to produce one or two of the games?

MIDGE#1: Meet the happiest people on earth in the sauna
Thanks I really enjoyed playing this! Game took me three tries, which is not that unusual for me. T344 SV, so nothing special, but I very much had a pleasant enough time.
The UU is the Sissi, (ridiculous when pronounced in english) which is a Machine Gun replacement.
The best ability of the Sissi is that it can melee attack. So I think that means the Shield buff will protect against city bombardment! I did not get to test this, but I will in the future, since it would be game breaking to have a half dozen well promoted MG that can take cities on their own! This hybrid melee ability is not mentioned in the UU description, and the trait is not kept when upgraded to Bazooka.

I see a Finland Dom-oriented game in my near future…

I'm playing both Midge 1 & 2. Fun and interesting so far. I've never had tourism as early as I got it with Finland, its turn 96 and I'm already exotic over 2 civs. And I really like the map in Midge 2.

Spoiler :
Midge 1: Culture from forests is awesome. I'm not even going to build camps on the deer. And I kind of don't even want to improve a Salt that I have in a forest. I've never had so much culture so early in any Civ 5 game. I'm on T96 and have 3 cities building NC. I'm going to found a fourth city up by Venice, I know I have time since its Venice. And maybe one more on the coast to the west, but that wouldn't be the best city in the world.
Spoiler T96 :
T96.jpg

Midge 2: Starting with faith instead of culture is interesting. I got first pantheon and second religion but if I don't spread my religion well it negates much of the advantage. I tried something different and bought a missionary before I enhanced my religion so I could spread it early. I should have settled two more cities but I was worried about making Liz and Suleiman mad. But its T90 and they still haven't settled the two spots I was thinking of, so I might go for it. Nizef I see you did settle those two spots; I was going to get greedy and settle on the flat grassland SW of where you settled near England so I could get the Citrus, maybe I'll found it where you did to be safe though.
Spoiler T96 :
