ETA recommits to violence...

What do you think of the ETA?

They are terrorists.

As for the Basque country, they should be independent if the basques want to. Do they? I've never seen any polls on this subject.

Is there not Basque in France too? The Basque of France and Spain deserve independance as much as the Kurds of Turkey, Iraq and Iran do. I support a Basque and a Kurd State (and a Pali State).

On the few occasions I have spoken with Basques (if that's what you call people from there), they were personable and entirely civilized. They wanted independance and I see no reason to deny their request.

ETA, being its own monster, isn't helping independance or democracy anymore than Hez, AlQ, or IRA (though I hear the Irish are behaving these days).

I would like a more concrete on ETA on ETA

Individuality in union is fine. But if a nationality does not wish to be part of a given country, that's their right, too.

Do I think the Basque SHOULD break off? Not really. But they certainly have a right to do exactly that if they chose to. Morally speaking, a country has the right to hold a piece of land only so long as the inhabitants of that piece of land wish to be part of the country.
You have to draw the line. Otherwise your gonna end up with countries splitting into regions and then into city states .

ETA is also a Marxist group, so yes, they're terrorists.

 Being a marxist automatically gets you a terrorist designation? I had no idea I was a high school terrorist...!

I had no idea you were actually a Marxist.

Was in high school! Read the manifesto and The Capital like they were scripture. But like a lot of things at the time, I grew out of it. Still consider myself a socialist though...

And why not?

Now, granted, a line has to be drawn - a single individual "voting" to no longer be part of the country would be just silly. But there is such a thing as a right to self-determination, and "splitting the current countries" is certainly no reason to prevent that.

I see nothing wrong with a pre-existant geopolitical entity choosing to strike out on its own at whatever level it deems fitting, if its constituent desire to do so after an open debate on the issue (by which I mean much more than 50%+1 ; 55% would be the bare minimum, and I lean more toward 60%, or even 66%).

The worst that can happen is a failure of the experiment followed by the city-state or other shamefacedly asking to be let back in.
