Ethnically Diverse Units (4/16/06)

White Rabbit is still quite far from the Renaissance Era... he first has to struggle through the Middle Ages, switching units as he goes, before he comes to the gunpowder units. ;)

ok, so *dumb* question, but the only way to get this running is to load game via "custom game" --> load mod --> select ethnic units (once installed on computer)...

correct?

As per the instructions found both in the first post and the readme file :) you can also modify the INI file for the game (found in My Documents\My Games\Warlords folder) - you'll need to change a line from "Mod = 0" to "Mod = Mods\Ethnically Diverse Units". This will make it so that everytime you run the game it loads EDU.

The Mongol Mounted Swordsman makes for an excellent Asian Knight. ;)

I also swapped the Mongol Javelineer in for the Mongol version of the Longbow... really, the Chinese and Eurasian archers they have are probably more properly Archers (the Chinese Unification and Three Kingdoms period are all Classical, not really Medieval), but unforunately the Eastern bowmen don't really follow the Western progression from "Archer" to "Longbow". It would be cool to have a mod of the Mongol Javelineer with a bow, so you coul have the Chinese Archer and then the Mongol Longbowman.... in the Medieval period the Chinese were under Mongol occupation anyway... but I digress...

It would also be cool to see the Hwacha crewman modded into some cool Korean units.

The new horsemen and horse archers are godly. There you have it, godly is the verdict of today! :king:

I've being playing around, with a reasonable level of success, with the celtic models, by having the predominant colour of the tartan as the alpha channel, then overlaying the white and yellow lines. This has the effect that each civ that uses them has it's own "tartan" on it's warriors (and swordsmen, spearmen, so on and so forth). It's not really historically accurate (Scottish Clan Tartans weren't developed until the 19th century, primarily as a tourist attraction, and Irish County Tartans, and the populer Irish National Tartan were designed in 1997) but it does look kinda cool when warriors clash.

Now quite sure what you mean but it sounds interesting, maybe you could post some screenshots.

Will do, like I said it'd not worked 100% but in the main that's because of my meagre artistic skills meaning that the shading doesn't quite work right.

Wow! Great idea! Could I use this in my mod?
You mean my stuff or Mozza's stuff? :)
In any case if it's my stuff then yeah of course, use it in any mod, any way you like. Just in case though, since some people missed it, but there's actually a mod in there, it's not just NIF files and textures :) so if you're stuck with XML or something like that just take a look at the files for the mod.

Well thank you, but to be fair most of them are from Warlords. The only one I made is the swordsman one, and that awesome leather armor he's sporting was made by seZ, and btw, unfortunately it's not very clear in game, but those little metal "buttons" on it have gloss and when looked up close they "sparkle" a bit and it looks wicked. So, I can hardly take any credit for those. :)

Edit: Could somebody let me know about the team color problems I've mentioned in this post. Should I take it that I'm the only one seeing these issues?

If it is mine please also feel free (and I'm glad White Rabbit gave the answer he did as I've already pinched a couple of his units :mischief: then again, I am working on a mod for Great Britain and stealing other people's assets for our own ends seems strangely appropriate)

As for the issue with team colour, I'm using Warlords and haven't experianced that.

I got a bit more then a teamcolor glitch sofar. I started a game yesterday, played it a turn or fifty and then went into the worldbuilder to check the new units ingame. They all where black. New ones and vanilla ones alike. It even stayed that way when I went back ingame.
Couldn't reproduce it in a new game tho.

In any case, I do experience some landscape glitches in Warlords which I didn't had in Civ4.

All black? That sounds very interesting. Was it only your own? What about your enemies? Is there a way to change team colour?

This sounds like your ordinary run of the mill bug (if such a think really exists ;)), at least I don't think it has anything to do with EDU directly, other than maybe your computer bugging out 'cause of all the extra unit graphics. Still, if anyone else encounters something like this while playing EDU let me know.

Yea Ive experienced this problem befor with the mod. All player units were dark, and subsequent turns got darker. Note that I have a lot of other non EDU units in the game as well. I just saved and restarted civ. It hasnt happened since.

I sent this PM to Rabbit, but I guess he's not online...

Can anyone help?

=========================================================

I downloaded your mod and installed successfully into Warlords.

However, I noticed that when I start with Korean Civ, I don't have the default "Asian" Units.

Is there any way to change this so that everytime Korean Civ is selected that they use the default Asian Units?

Thanks

Hmmm, what was the situation that it occured in? Was it late in the game with a lot of units on the map? Did you go into worldbuilder or did it just happened one turn? Absolutely all units were dark? You said they got darker, does that mean they were semi-dark before? How exactly did that look, like they weren't lit, or like the texture just got dark? Any extra details you could think of would be good.

If this happens to anyone else, please take couple of screenshots, I'd like to see what we're talking about. :)

It still kinda seems like one of those random glitches more than a particular persisten bug, and not necessarily because of EDU but the number of units in game probably has effect. It might very well be a slight overheating of the graphics card... although I cannot believe I'm talking about civ4 and graphics card overheating in one paragraph :crazyeye:

In total realism there are very few problems with colour changes, and there are a lot of new units. Only problem was with longbowmen, they became red for some reason. So perhaps it isnt the number of units.

Well the longbowman problem actually makes me feel better 'cause now I know it's not my mod. As far as that other bug, I mean I really can't see how EDU could've caused it. In terms of XML changes I'm doing nothing out of the ordinary, just your run of the mill unit additions. I guess the only culprit could be the units themselves, it's possible that by doing something wrong with a NIF file it somehow affects the entire game's performance, although that would be a very strange bug, and it would be very difficult to track down something like that.

Still, keep sending those bug reports ;) and like I said, if you get a chance snap couple of shots and provide any detail you think might be useful. On my part I'll keep an eye out for this bug and try to test things more thoroughly.
