Eugene of Savoy

De Gaulle was Belgian. :smug:

on the topic, I have been to Oudenaarde and i saw the plaque there commerating the great battle vs the French imperial scum. (we have a ton of those here :mischief:)
and pannonnius likes him but for all the wrong reasons, but CFC'ers should be wary of stripping down the achievements of Eugene just because you don't like the obnoxious poster.

You do that..

and let me enjoy how the fear still valid is,which is placed in your kins heart's centuries ago....

thank you for proving my point...

philippe here refers to the expansionist French of Louis XIV as 'imperial' for occupying the Spanish/Austrian Netherlands/Belgium during the opening events of the War of the Spanish Succession. It's not a reference to the Holy Roman Empire, for which Eugen spent most of his time in service.

It used to be part of Flanders, Ergo, he is Belgian :smug:
besides, his mother was Flemish, his original lastname was "Vandewalle" which is a typical flemish name.

That's a bit like declaring someone born tomorrow in Ireland with family roots in the Old English settlers to be British regardless of prevailing political reality and what the person considers themselves to be.

absolutely, but what are you going to do about it? ;)

A lot of historical figures have another nationality if were born in present days borders and vica-versa.

Besides, i'm not 100% serious with this. The frenchies kan keep him, Brel is ours though. :smug:

Turin -and Italy- owes much to Eugene of Savoy.

I know but if a french can be counted as an austrian hero, then a pole could do it to.Anything else would be fascist behaviour.

lol, Columbus is a "national" hero in Spain, but wasn't Spanish...

Or placed myriads of Slavs, Jews, and Turks under the oppressive yoke of Austrian power.

or was just a good General and didn't directly do any of this except in your biased eyes.

My comment was in response to a very hateful post by a Slav about how great Eugene of Savoy was for killing lots of Muslim Turks. My post is still technically true, but just as stupid as his is.

Actually I dont think Prince Eugene has managed to kill lots of Muslim Turks. He won a battle. But of course my Knowledge about Eugene is too small.

Letting him to cheer about the Eugene's victory over my lands people is not a bad thing.

Oh by the way..

If I remember it correctly according to LaMartine,Eugene got help from a traitorous turkish pasha Cafer..

and whatever...

Whatever the other factors in the Battle of Zenta, the primary reason for Eugen's victory was the total surprise that he achieved in being able to attack the Turks when they were fording the Theiss. (I think it was the Theiss. Been awhile.) Surprise + river crossing defense + generally superior training anyway = wins.
