there are a few ex-churches around here that now have different uses, 'the church' seems to get over it. it's when you find out your local kebab shop has a 'mosque' above it, you raise eyebrows. they even had an open day (the mosque, not the kebab shop)

Sure, but we have a lot of late victorian churches. A 17thc church we should defend as-is, but we have these comming out of our ears.

Building styles vary from period to period and preserving examples of architecture from bigone eras is an excellent way to preserve the town's historical heritage, make it unique (instead of just modern urban sprawl), they make areas more visually attractive, and preserve the character of the town. In short preserving historical areas & buildings makes great sense from both economic and historic reasons.

I agree that the building should be preserved, but it looks like the building is holding up just fine. The historical architecture of the building itself will be no different whether it is used as a church, a mosque, or a condo. As far as I understand, nothing was done to the exterior of the church in converting it into a mosque. And if it was, I'm sure they didn't just throw stuff out.

I was just asking whether Muslims would allow something like that in their countries.

The answer is no, they would most likely refuse it and kill those infidels who proposed such un-islamic nonsense.

I see no reason why the West should step back, while Muslims are not willing to make any sort of compromise.

It depends on how old the church is. If it is more then 150 years then I'd call it a historic site and refuse to allow it to be changed.

seriously, I find it kinda funny, on one side we consider ourselves so much more advanced and tolerant, and on the other side we proclaim that we should act every bit as bigoted and intolerant as those supposedly backwards muslims

let's face it, the church wouldn't have been lost its congregation in Saudi Arabia to start with, so there would have been no point in making it into a christian church. But this church here seems to have been abandoned by the christians, so why not put it to different use?

"Would Turky allow this?" is a much more relevant question, in my oppinion, although I do not really feel that this hold any relevance at all.

The old curch a few blocks away is used for dance and rave-parties. There also was a regae party a couple of weeks ago I went to, it was odd but cool. They have a stroboscope behind the painted leaded glass windows which looks insanely cool.

I dont like it, makes me pissed off. Do I want it to continue? No. Would I stop it if I could? Yes. Not because I think Muslims are evil monsters but because I happen to feel a personal connection with Western civilization. The fact is, this sort of thing has been happening since Day 1, and it'll never stop. Where are the original builders of Stonehenge? Long gone and nearly forgotten. I am not surprised by this, considering how stale most churches have become. They have lost their proper vision and thus they are becoming absolete, if they do not stay the course they are meant to be on.

@The people who are saying "would they let us": Well? Britain prides itself on being liberal, on secularism and multiculturalism. The majority of Muslim states lack this, and thus can be discounted from comparison. I doubt they would let an old Mosque be turned into a factory, so the situation would not be paralleled.
