EX? - War? What is it good for?

No, Erik Mesoy is skipped. His turn will not come back until next round - I want to hear more from Erik Mesoy, rather than him popping in once in awhile a day late for his turn. He will have to wait this time. :nono:

I admit it, I was wrong, I forgot to warn, I'm skipped this turn, I have to wait for next round.
Happy now?:D  :D

I'll be at home for a while now. Now more unplanned absences.

Wow, we managed a damn-good land-grab. I take it Madras is prebuilding Sistene's ;)? Alright, I got it. Time to switch from Super Mario to Civ3 :).

0 - Hurry Walls in Jaipur. MM Bombay.
1 - Ganges worker, another worker (took me a second to figure how to MM it right). Bombay marketplace, starts library. Jaipur walls to library. Turn off lux tax. Can get Feudalism cheap from the Babs if we surrender 3 luxes, I hold off for now.
2 - Madras and Punjab fall into disorder - one of those random events I presume. Ah well, luxuries back up to 10%. *WHY* is the "cancel orders for friendly combat unit" pref on? It's useless! And it almost ruined one of my games!!! Lucky I caught that soon. I buy the Bab WM for 3g just to see what that little island north of them leads to... nothing.
3 - Cathedral hurried in Hyderabad.
4 - Hyderbad Cathedral to Courthouse. Babs have found someone to get Spices from. :(
(I) - Aztecs finish the Colossus (for some reason I think they got a lot of vet spears now, too . Sorry, couldn't resist).
5 - Rush granary in Bangalore.
6 - Hamburg Courthouse to Market. Bangalore Granary to Harbor. If the governor does it right, Chittagong will finish its temple next turn.
7 - Waste rips us off in Chittagong. I MM the city. Holy s***! We have 36 workers! I switch Ganges to a cathedral for the time being. It can always return to the worker routine whenever needed. I think we're ok for 7 turns :). Granary in Kohlapur rushed.
8 - Kohlapur Granary to Harbor. Chittagong Temple to Market.
9 - Bombay Library to Courthouse.
10 - We lose a source of iron (but have 3 others).

The harbors in Bangalore and Kohlapur can be changed to a courthouse if you feel its more necessary. In order for either city to grown, we need that harbor though. I went a little easy on rushing (I think) - many of the harbors and courthouses empirewide may deserve rushing, but I tried to keep our treasury >200g. We have 521g right now, and have 15 turns to Theology. Babylon will still sell us Feudalism for 280g and 2 luxes. I chose to hold off on that since we can probably get Feudalism from Theology, and I don't see a pressing need for Feudalism at the present. We have 32 turns until the FP in Madras.

EDIT: It may be wise to build a few settlers so we can quickly grab any land that opens up from AI wars,or to settle in AI territory in case of any aggression.

T-Hawk is next.

The idea on Ganges is for it to produce workers to rocket up the population in all our cities (especially Calcutta and Madras); I'll probably rush the cathedral or marketplace and get back to that.

Oh, I see. I figured they were just for working :crazyeye:. The problem with Madras is once it grows again, we'll have to start jacking up the luxury tax (right now its at 4 happy, 4 unhappy). Watch that city. We should have rushed a cathedral or colloseum there before undertaking the FP.

Ganges already has a marketplace :).

As I said, I think we should keep Ganges on worker cranking. A cathedral won't help it do that. I guess the best thing to do with the shields it's accumulated is swap it to settler, so we have one available if needed.

Chittagong swapped to aqueduct; it'll need that before the marketplace would finish.

I catch Sri Lanka about to riot and hire a scientist.

There's too many workers working on jungle while cities like Hamburg are crying for improved plains. Let's get the easy worker jobs done first, then start the hard ones. Also be careful on wasted worker labor - there's 4 workers chopping a forest at Bangalore. It takes 10 worker turns to chop a forest, so some of that labor will go to waste on the last turn.

I spend the 23 gold to investigate Uruk, which is competing with our Jaipur. It's got 96 culture, has a library, and a temple due in 17 at 1spt. Jaipur has 54 and only a temple; too far behind to attempt catching up, especially considering all the culture is cheap for Babylon. It swaps to courthouse.

I charge Babylon 15g and his world map to renew the RoP, and Persia 22g for the same.

110 AD: Germany completes the Great Lighthouse. In Frankfurt, which actually worries me slightly about Bombay keeping ahead of Frankfurt culturally, but then I see that Bombay's got a library already.

130 AD: Greece and Persia got Theology, but Babylon didn't. Two-for-one tech deals are always nice. Ivory + Incense + 405 gold to Greece for Theology. Theology to Babylon for Feudalism straight-up.

Madras swaps to Sistine for real, and I realize it's got a problem - it doesn't have a cathedral and will have happiness problems until it finishes Sistine and then builds a cathedral. But we really don't want to delay Sistine, so I grudgingly raise lux to 20%, merge in workers to get Madras up to full size 12, and give Madras some shared hill tiles. That changes Sistine from due in 26 to due in 13. :)

170 AD: I add workers to Calcutta, getting the Forbidden Palace build time down to 12 turns. I apologize to Lahore, but all its clear tiles were needed by Madras and Calcutta, so it swaps to a harbor so it won't starve.

210 AD: Bombay finishes its courthouse, and I start it on a palace to prebuild for JS Bach's Cathedral.

250 AD: Germany has finally completed a road so we can trade, and I sell them Spices for 3/turn.

270 AD: Delhi is my next target to bring up to full size with workers, since it's got low food but plenty of shields.

Thunderhawk retires yet again. Forbidden Palace due in 6 and Sistine due in 7.

Babylon has Engineering but nobody else does; definitely don't pay the high price for it. :)

The settler is sitting in Hamburg, if we ever want to use him.

Delhi will stop starving once those workers finish irrigating (don't assign plains to it from Chittagong.)

And KEEP GANGES ON WORKER CHURN until EVERY one of our cities is at size 12. Which is better, fishing villages struggling to grow every 10 turns or Ganges feeding them a worker every turn? :) Hamburg should be the next target to merge workers, since it's another one of those with many plains and shields but not much food.

Got it, will play later tonight.

So nobody built a single military unit since my last turn, humm? I hope prefessor X doesn't feel sudden urge to show us what war is good for?

SJ may have a point - I noticed in my turn that we have one spearman per city. While our economy is important, I think the military shut-off may hurt us in the long run. Perhaps if webolster up some of the bigger cities and the border towns we may be able to prevent any aggression. Don't be surprised if Bizzy is the one to get anxious - when the AI is cramped it will declare war on a neighbor for room, no matter how strong.

0) 270 AD

Looking over our empire, everything looks good. I see the cathedral and
courthouse being rushed by the previous leader, yet we still have over 500
gold in the bank. Good! I see workers being queued up in Ganges. That
entire city will be busy making babies for the next two hundred years. ;)

T-hawk says Delhi should not get Chittagong's plains, so I give Delhi one
of Chittagong's forest tile instead :D. Chittagong's aqueduct is delayed by
one turn, but the ETC on the Delhi Grand Cathedral is reduced from two to
one.

While in Delhi, I noticed that it has nothing but plains as its food tiles,
that means it will only be able to work two hill tiles until rails. At pop.
12, working 10 plains and two hills, it will generate 18 shields with 4
waste. I need it to be at 15 spt for a military factory. That means Delhi
will need a courthouse before military. Can I wait another 6 turns before
starting military production? I might, but I'm also looking for
alternatives.

Bombay looks like a good choice, if working a mined plain instead of an
irregated one, it will generate exactly 15 shields. But can I afford to
veto the wonder? Looking over AI's wonder cities, Berlin has us beat by a
long shot. It will probably get Sun Tzu's, and a golden age for the Germans.
None of the Babylonian nor the Greek cities can generate more than 10
shields, so they are not a threat. Both of the Persian towns are at around
11 spt, comparing to our 15 spt. We are winning, but it's close. So, no
veto. The military will have to wait, again.

I do, however, start upgrading on spears to pikes.

1) 280 AD

- In between turns, Babs starts Sun Tzu's in Akkad, a size 3 city!
- Delhi finishes cathedral, it starts on courthouse, will finish in 7.
- Hyderabad finishes courthouse, normally I'd start a granary, but with
the babies factory in Ganges, I pick library instead for the culture.
- Bengal finishes cathedral, I start it on a barrack.
- Education is discovered. Both education and engineering has been traded
around, but the German's still lack education, and the Persians still
lack engineering. We can fix that :) . Ivory + WM + 5gpt + 200 some odd
gold to Biz for Engineering, then Engineering +WM + 5gpt + 150 gold to
X-man for Education, and Education back to Biz for Chivary and 66 gold.
With Chivary, I want to eventually build one knight for the AI to fear.
The choice was either the tech or two hundred extra gold, which is way
below the market value for education anyways. I figure getting a major
middle age military tech for 200 gold is worth it.
- Research is set to Banking at 40 turns via our lone mad scientist in
Sri Lanka.

2) 290 AD

- Ouch, I see that an iron has just appeared in the mountain north of
Frankfurt. So the Germans have both horse and iron now.

3) 300 AD

- Nothing is completed these two turns. I spend the time rotating and
upgrading our spears to pikes.

4) 310 AD

- Great news! The Persian city of Gordium decides to try our peaceful
approach for a change. We get a free regular pikeman in the deal.
(hey, it does matter when it's the only pike on our entire Persian front)
Gordium was handed to us at size 5 and starving :crazyeye: . Goodness, it's a
harsh world out there.
- Mean while, the old pikeman shuffle continues...

5) 320 AD

- A lot of workers moving around, did I say a lot? I mean A LOT. Most of
them are heading in Hamburg's direction.
- Gordium gets a new temple for 116 gold, and a second pikemen defender.

6) 330 AD

- Ah, finally, a turn where something is completed, and it's whopper too.
Our forbidden palace is finished in Calcutta. I set it to building a
Cathedral in 5. Our income jumps from 102 gpt to 149.
- Humburg has finished its cathedral. It now has all the critical
infrastructures, so barrack is next.
- Gordium gets temple, up next - courthouse. Remember to swap it to
walls the moment you see X-man act funny.

7) 340 AD

- Our greatest turn yet:

First, Madras completes the Sistine Chaple as scheduled. WLTKD
celebrated all over our land. It should do wonders for our culturally
pressed cities.

Then, Frankfurt flips!
Along with its Great Lighthouse.
Along with Germany's only Iron.
Along with a shiny new pikeman... okay, so that's not as exciting,
But Frankfurt flips! The citizens of my namesake city must love me  .

Lastly, as a foot note in this great year in Hindu history, Delhi
completes its courthouse, reaches exactly 15 shield per turn, and
starts cranking pikes every other turn. We will soon have troops to
defend (remember, defend, never attack) our glorious empire.

8) 350 AD

- Frankfurt's temple is hurried for 108 gold. Frankfurt is under pretty
heavy German cultural pressure right now, and will continue to be for
the forseable furture. I'd suggest getting it to size 6 ASAP, and rush
a cathedral, since WLTKD reduces flip chances. And of course we need to
garrason it heavily.
- With Hamburg coming online, and the Gordium flip taking away Bengal's
frontier status, Bengal's barrack is changed into a marketplace.
- I hurry the library in Hyderabad for, errr, a lot of money, but the
control of an iron is in question here.

9) 360 AD

- Moving more workers toward Frankfurt to irrigate it. Other than
that, nothing much happens.
- But wait, I see some suspicious movement of German warriors coming in
from Persian territory (they do have two cities there). It could be
nothing, but I send Madras' pike into Hamburg just in case.

10) 370 AD

- Biz has a warrior right next to Hamburg now, with another right behind
him. There are also four German archers right on our borders. Those
warriors could be coming for us, or they could be just heading home...
It's serious enough to make me swap Frankfurt to walls and hurry them. I
also send two worker in Bangalore's direction. In case there is war, we
can join the worker into the city to bring it to size 7 -- the same
effect as building a wall.
- Mean while, trade routes with the Zulus-Aztec island has opened up.
They have Dye to offer, and are way behind in tech. I see that the
Aztecs are further behind than the Zulus, so I trade Feudalism + ROP
for Dye and 24 gold.
- I want to see want Biz is upto, so I play just one more turn...

11) 380 AD

- No war !!! German warriors make a left turn and head toward Berlin.
Good, because in a few more turns, we will have pikes galore, and we
won't be afraid of anybody (or at least the ironless Germans) anymore.
- Cathedral in Madras and Calcutta both complete this turn. We can turn
off our lux tax now. Our income goes from +154 to +228.
- Caught Karachi building a granary. If everything goes according to
plan, we won't need those things until hospitals. Karachi is building
a courthouse now.
- The two workers that were heading to Bangalore caught a boat to Sri
Lanka.
- Massive amount of workers gather near Frankfurt, they will need to
irrigate three more tiles, so that Frankfurt can reach size six and
WLTKD.

Everything looks good now. Madras is currently without a defender. As
soon as the German warriors leave the vincinity of Hamberg, you can wake
the regular pike in Hamberg and send him back to Madras.

As the Lux tax is turned off, we are going to lose WLTKD all over the
place. Both Delhi and Hamberg are set to 15 spt under none-WLTKD, so
you don't need to adjust their tiles.

Our economy is good enough to research Banking in 7 turns at +14 gpt.
We could build libraries, turn on research, and run away with this thing
now. But before we do that (libraries, that is), I'd suggest that we
bring our military up to par first. We have enough margin for error such
that we don't need to take the military risk.

Oh, and don't forget we have the Great Lighthouse now. Take advantage of
it.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/Chandragupta-380ad.SAV

Great turn! And we got tremendous luck on a flip again - I never before saw a wonder city flip!

One thing: The choice was either Chivalry or two hundred extra gold

I think we should've taken the gold. We won't attack, so knights are useless. An opportunity always eventually come up to get Chivalry really for free, if we do want to build one for the AI to fear (and I don't think that having one of a particular unit actually matters - the AI bases relative military strength on the total value of all units.)

And let's go for Banking soon and get that Wall Street going. 50 gpt extra income would be a bigger increase than even the Forbidden Palace was.

Oh, and don't forget we have the Great Lighthouse now. Take advantage of it.

You did, by trading for the Dyes. :)

Here's the funny part about the flips: They're coming because we're ahead on culture, which we got by whipping out the temples early. "They kill all their people to sacrifice to their gods! We must join them!"

Amen, T-Hawk. Great turn. I agree to research Banking and get as many banks (er... Wall Street) in as possible. By then we'll be near if not in the Industrial Era, our time to shine :).

Getting Chivalry instead of gold was probably :smoke: . I was thinking at the time, well, some mobile defensive units would be nice. Looking back, I don't think we'll get around to building a knight for while. Chivalry could have waited.

One great thing about playing a SG games, is that I have other people to pick up on things that I have missed. So yeah, we should be researching Banking. I was thinking at the time about things like, oh, we should buid libraries first if we're gonna turn on research; or, we want to slow down the global tech pace to get a chance to kill the wonder cascade. But really, none of that will benefit us as much as getting banks and Well Street 30 turns early. Go for it.

Lets try do something right this time.
