EX? - War? What is it good for?

Notes from earlier: Ganges is a worker factory. Leave it ALONE.
Take advantage of the Lighthouse.
Crank out Pikes for defense.
Build libraries and run away with the game.
Umm, Bombay is prebuilding for something. Sunny's?

Hmm, I notice we are running min science to Banking. Oops, rush to it! I up science to 50%, as I want some rushing money.
Turn 0: Rushed... A lot of stuff. You dont want to know.
I ask Germany to leave our territory. j/k Ex!
Nothing really rushed either.
Hit enter.

1:390 AD. Hamburg builds pikeman. WLTMD stops there and in Bombay.
2:400 AD. Cathedral rushed in frankfurt, workerpump it to size 6. Major irrigation going on there.
3:410 AD. Pike built. Chittagong riots!
4:420 AD. Delhi builds Pike. I keep getting requests to start Sun Tzu's. The zulu start it. I switch the palace to SUn Tzu's. ETA 23 turns. F7- the zulu are building Sun Tzus in a city which has Gardens.
5:430 AD. Germany completes Sun Tzu's. I switch back to palace. Persia starts Copernicus, Greece starts Leo's. The germans leave our territory!
6:440 AD. A bunch of bank prebuilds are coming up...
7:450 AD. A german settler/spear wanders into our territory.
8:460 AD. Banking discovered! Germany cancelks our spices contract. I start researching Economics, we will want Smiths to pay for those banks.
Babylon demands ivory. I cave.
9:470 AD. The First National Bank of India built in Bengal.
10:480 AD. Second National Bank of India completed in Delhi. Back to pikes.
11:490 AD. Third National Bank of India completed in Hamburg. Back to pikes.
12:500 AD. No banks completed! Boohoo!
13:510 AD. Fourth and Fifth NBoI complete. Palace switched to Wall Street. 5 shields wasted ;) Our economy is MUCH better than at the start of my reign. I heard someone saying Banking in 7 at a loss- now we can get economics in 6 at a gain. I left research off a while, so this is from scratch.
14:520 AD. Wall Street complete in Bombay! Barracks started, we have 15 shields/turn here.
15: 530 AD. Economics in 4 turns, IF we research... we may want leave 1 turn of research left on it, so we can get it when we like, and slow the tech rate and get money instead. Calcutta is prebuilding for Smith's. I say put tech down to 20%, then rush banks, libraries, and cathedrals with the money, then nab smiths. BTW, Bizzy will give Invention and Astronomy for Banking.

I think I did fairly well this round.

Yea, I was kinda dismayed when we lost our JS Bach's prebuild :(. No problem though, we can still manage it. Good turn :goodjob:.

Hey, Zarth, can you hurry with your turn? I won't be back until Tuesday after tonight, and I'd like to get in a final turn :p.

0 - Lahore is in disorder? :nono: :D Our high-productive cities now are Madras and Calcutta, both at 20 shields. Apparently Calcutta is already on a prebuild. Why does Chittagong have an entertainer? He is fired on the spot. Harbor rushed in Sri Lanka. The next few turns should probably see a lot of rushing, so i don't think we'll be at 1000g until at least the end of my turn. Cathedrals and harbors are more important than 10 gpt :D. Ooooh... the AI is offering some very tempting deals for Banking. We get Economics in 4 turns... I'll hold off fer just a just bit and see if the AI is researching it (a la T-Hawk :)). I am going to put priority on Smith's rather than Bach's, as our economy is our strength in this game. Madras will become the Bach's placeholder upon completion of its library.

1 - Hamburg pikeman to library. Sri Lanka harbor to temple, entertainer fired. Bah! Terrible news! The Babs are building Bach's! At a *ahem* small cost, the cathedral in Lahore is rushed (maybe a market would have been better. But so it is). The AI is playing tricks! Greece has lowered its offer for Banking, but Babylon has increased theirs! What to do? hold off... Lots of MMing this turn.

I also notice now that if we trade banking, we can acquire Astronomy which also means Copernicus'. We also would get Invention, which means Leo's. Those two, and Smith's, IMHO, are all higher-priority than Bach's (sorry T-Hawk!). We have 6 luxuries and Sistene's, so happiness, while still an issue, isn't our number one issue. Leo's would be nice (as would SunTzu's), but it isn't essential, and we probably couldn't get it anyhow. Copernicus', for us, I think is a biggie. No explanation needed. That said, I'm going to head for Smith's and Copernicus', leaving Bach's and Leo's behind. We get Economics in 3, meaning Calcutta will start Smith's then. After I trade off banking, Madras will start on Copernicus'. (of course, this can be vetoed by the next player)

2 - Delhi pikeman to library. Bangalore courthouse to library. Lahore cathedral to market. Everyone goes down for banking, and the price for all 3 techs we lack goes up a tad. Is MT worth a third of our treasury? Wow, something just happened to our economy - we are in recession! Sliders adjusted accordingly, economics still in 2.

3 - Bombay barracks to bank. Why was it producing a barracks? I should have switched that. Madras library to university (placeholder). Frankfurt aqueduct to market. Gordium courthouse to market. Courthouse in Jaipur rushed. AI prices for Banking go up again. I am reminded of the DOW...

4 - We discover Economics. Any tech we wish only costs 4 turns... hmmm... time for some experimentation. Jaipur courthouse to harbor. Calcutta switched to Smith's, ETA 25 turns. Banking prices way down. Time to sell.

Banking to Babylon fer 15 gpt, Invention, Astronomy. (Madras switched to Copernicus', ETA 19 turns)
Banking, Ivory, 155g to Greece fer Gunpowder.
Banking to Persia fer Music Theory, 6, WM (everything they got).

We have two sources of saltpeter in our borders, one hooked up outside Delhi. The other shall remain UNHOOKED (for now). We are researching Chemistry now, 5 turns.

5 - Bengal (something) to university. Worker merged into Chittagong.

Only 5 turns. Bit busy, so I'll make this short and sweet: T-Hawk, you'll probably have a field day vetoing my wonder choices (I can sense it... :)); don't worry I won't be offended. I think , if we MUST get Bach's, we swtich Bombay or Hamburg to it (39 ot 37 turns respectively). Well, gotta jet, see you all on Tuesday :).

ps - T-Hawk, if my turn in TH3 comes up, feel free to skip me of course.

Zarth's up now, before me.

As for the wonders, let's do the math. Bach's is worth 2gpt per city of luxury tax in the long run. Smith's is worth about the same, since all of our cities will have marketplaces, 5 have banks (more won't be worthwhile since we'll be allocating most commerce to science from here on out) and all but about 5 will have harbors.

In Bach's favor, denial of it is better - to an AI, it's worth 2 entertainers per city (since they don't run lux tax) which is more than 2gpt per city. However, Bach's can be less useful to us in the medium term, if we have enough lux (and Sistine helping) for all the cities to remain happy already. Smith's will always work.

So it's a wash. :) Completely up to the leader at the time -- but if we're about to complete one and the AIs have not gotten the tech for the other, play Kill the Cascade. :)

Smith pays for airports too. That is a *lot* later, but I think the point is worth noticing.

570AD science to printing press,I 'm trying to get to democracy as soon as i can.

We lose our supply of Dyes. The Aztecs have no extra dyes anymore. They must have lost it in the war with the Zulu.

Switch library in Bangalore to marketplace and hurry.

Banglore finishes marketplace, start library.
Indus founded.

We discover printing press, start democracy. We will discover it in 4 turns at -104.

We will discover chemistry in 3 turns. After that I think we should research towards theory of gravity, because I don't think we will be able to build two wonders in our two wonder cities, Madras and Calcutta. I think we shouldn't research free artistry, cause Shakespeare's doesnt really help us very much. To slow down the AI in the wonder race we could sell democracy to them, because they would start a revolution and wouldn't be able to continue building while in anarchy.

Tarsus finishes Leonardo's workshop! I investigate Tarsus. It has only a granary and Leo's! I decide to use the settler in Hamburg to aggressively build a city naer Tarsus. We will have to hurry cultural improvements here.
Switch library in Bangalore to marketplace and hurry.

Wow, Tarsus must have been cascading FOREVER. Have you read the reports of Epic 13 from Realms Beyond Civilization? In that, we discovered that aggressive settlement against cities is the leading factor determining whether the AIs decide to declare war against the player. So this is a real gamble - will it be possible to flip Tarsus, or will it land us in a very unwanted war? We shall see... :)

Berlin finishes Copernicus's Observatory! I switch Madras to Bach's. will be completed in 20 turns.

Hope we get it, though if not we should be able to turn it into Smith's. Remember that any wonder now still gets us our Golden Age...

We will discover chemistry in 3 turns. After that I think we should research towards theory of gravity, because I don't think we will be able to build two wonders in our two wonder cities, Madras and Calcutta.

With a Golden Age from the first wonder, we'd have a good shot at a second wonder. I'll see if we can get both Bach's and Smith's that way.

I think we shouldn't research free artistry, cause Shakespeare's doesnt really help us very much.

Indeed. But the AIs do like to research it; maybe we'll wind up with it when trading around tech later. As for selling democracy, we may as well, since they'll research it themselves anyway. Printing Press seems to be absolutely last on their priority list to research but Democracy is quite high.

I'm up. Got it, though I'm in feast mode between here, TH3, SP1, and RBE2 (did that last night.)

Inherited turn: Somebody was smokin' a lot of weed... :smoke: :)

I notice Ganges has 8 food in the box and (somehow) all 10 shields of its worker complete. I guess the worker was rushed? That doesn't help if Ganges is already producing 10 shields per turn...

I fire the clown in Bangalore, and swap it to cathedral from library.

MM a hill tile to Madras from Hamburg to take a turn off Bach's.

Gordium swaps to aqueduct (looks like it's on the river but it isn't.)

Hey! Why did we put all that effort into Wall Street and then not keep 1000 gold in the treasury? Research shut OFF until we get back up there.

Five workers outside Calcutta are mining a hill that isn't in any city radius.. :smoke:

ex-workers.jpg

The tile 2 squares due south of Karachi is in a similar state.

Diplo check:
Charge Babylon 20g to renew RoP; he's back to Polite.
Charge Persia 42g for the same.
Sell Democracy to Persia for 44gpt and to Greece for 10gpt. Both immediately revolt.

At end of turn, Nineveh completes JS Bach's. So much for that plan. Pasargadae and Athens cascade to Smith's, and they're both core cities but only at sizes 9 and 8. Mental note - don't trade lux to Persia or Greece. Also, both of them just went into anarchy.

680 AD: Calcutta continues building Smith's. We're too far from any other wonder, though, so Madras cashes in for a university, losing 42 shields.

Actually, I decide to hire clowns back in Bangalore and Kolhapur to drop the lux tax back to 0.

690 AD: Madras starts building some muskets to get updated defenses on the border cities.

700 AD: Ganges keeps cranking workers, workers keep cranking improvements. I merge a couple into size-11 cities, and start some heading towards the Bengal jungle area.

710 AD: Chemistry discovered, Physics next.

Greece has a silks to trade. I give them Chemistry for Silks + 120 + 19/turn, and fire our clowns.

I gift a few outdated techs - Engineering mostly - to our annoyed friends, and everybody goes to Polite.

740: Dangit. Athens completes Smith's 7 turns ahead of us.
But we discover Physics (we hit the 4-turn cap, too), and set to ToG next. Calcutta can use the palace to tide it over to Newton's.

750 AD: I pass off, finally evening out the year numbers. :)

One other thing - Every time a lux deal expires, make sure we renew for it immediately. Otherwise another civ will trade for that available lux and lock us out of acquiring it. It was a bit of luck that Greece had a silks available to trade when they did. (The F2 screen quickly shows you all resources available to trade for.)

And Newton's five turns from now will kick off our Golden Age. Have fun!

I support you there. Use the food to grow a lot bigger and crank out a lot of shields. Ganges can now be turned into wonder building city. Perhaps Suffrage?

Universal Suffrage reduces war weariness and we don't plan on being in a state of war for long or even be at war with anyone at all.

Good idea, Frank. Before you stop that, though, have Ganges produce an extra 6 workers for ITSELF, to immediately merge right back into the city and take it instantly to size 12.

We should score every wonder from here on easily. Even Suffrage, since we definitely can get hit by weariness if we're attacked while not fighting back.
