I guess the settlers may start escorted, but shouldthe escort die (trying to attack barbs or whatever), then the settler remains alone in the wild.

Started a new game 1 hour ago. World was on "casual" and happened to settle Rome in a small island. By turn 45 i've meet Japan and Norwey by the 50th. On turn 54 they both declared formal war on me. After beating a single japanese warrior, Hojo made peace with me. Yay pointless wars!

Fyi Japan was on the isle next to me. Norwey was about 30tiles away.

I'm about to finish my first post-patch game. I like the UI tweaks they did and i have not encountered any spams in this game, neither of military nor of religious units.

What still isn't working at all though (besides the trashy tactical AI) is diplomacy. I received many pointless DoWs, for no reason at all, and usually without any military units showing up at my borders. Cleopatra DoWed me for no reason two turns after our Freindship ended. Through most of the game virtually all leaders were annoyed by me (I had waged only one short war). The only difference is that the AIs now always(!) declare joint wars which doesn't accomplish anything for them but makes the whole mess even more frustrating.

The patch is a good start, but nothing more. they have a long way to go.

With the patch did something change with how the city decides to use squares? It seems like my new city chooses production squares over growth squares now and I have to make sure I go in and change it

Err... Ice Age would be even worse.

First "full time" bipedal human ancestors = roughly 4 million years ago
Earliest stone tools/beginning of the Stone Age = roughly 3.4 million years ago

"Ice Age" isn't an exact period because we've had multiple cold periods on Earth I suppose. But if we're taking the last one (Pleistocene) = roughly 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago.

They should've just left out the quote about the "great beasts" and put in something about the reign of the dinosaurs instead. Pretty significant period of Earth's history, anyway.. :)

Crap... I guess I just got lucky in my games so far .. :(

What about unmet AI civs declaring on the player / your own leader declaring on you?

I'm playing one right now. My first game post patch. These really are intended to multiplayer, but I'm playing single player for something different. I would recommend you up your normal difficulty level if you play these. The AI doesn't handle them well. Especially if you are a warmonger like me and conquer all the middle cities. :D The AI is having trouble finding good places to settle. I'm playing a small map, so that's part of the problem. They also can't conquer city states due to them being on islands, so this weakens AI expansion as well. This game is pathetically easy. Like I said, these maps are best suited for multiplayer.

I'm guessing the same intern responsible for the tech quotes was at work with this one.

Honestly, it bugs me quite a bit that they didn't manage to find someone with even a modicum of interest in history to work on this (and on the Civilopedia). Why have any historic detail in the game at all, if it's incorrect?

Anyone tried this fall patch without any other mods? Do the AI upgrade their units? Do you see them with strategic resources units (swordsman, musketman etc)?

I'm trying to see whether I should disable Novemberisms' Strategic Resource and Tech Tree Rebalance Mod.

Upgrade units? Not seen the proof yet. City states yes, AI Nations no

Nope, still fighting slingers with tanks on Immortal. Arabia managed to build a decent sized knight army but only because it's their UU and doesn't require resources.

Also the new warmonger diplo penalties are absolutely ridiculous. It seems like every city you conquer adds a hefty diplo penalty now. Before the patch, you could often avoid penalties by playing a smart diplo game. Now, it's impossible. I hope something doesn't work as intended by the devs here.

The fact that they didn't fix AI unit upgrading is really disappointing. Especially because there are multiple mods out there that have successfully fixed it! Firaxis could have copied one of those, if nothing else.

It's definitely an inconsistent thing. Sometimes the AI upgrades, sometimes it doesn't. I've played two conquest-heavy Deity games with the patch, and in both I've seen carpets of AI warriors in the lategame. I'm playing a game as Spain now. It's 1100 AD and America is in the Information Era. Teddy declared war on me and showed up with... a bunch of warriors, slingers, and horsemen. He was about 10 techs ahead of me but his invasion posed no threat whatsoever. Yuck.

But the AI does occasionally do it, yeah. I think a lot of it has to do with the AI tech path, which is somewhat random.

Are you sure they're upgrading and not just building new units from scratch? They do get some crazy production boosts, so it's probably very easy for them to modernize through production.

Before the patch the AI would replace those ancient units with more modern ones after their old unit had been defeated. Guess that still holds. But when you attack a feeble enemy in 1200AD and all they field are warriors, spears and catapults, all immersion is gone in an instant. Not to mention that this sort of game poses only a challenge for your patience. You are basically playing with yourself.

Lots of stuff yet to be improved / fixed! No doubt! But I'm glad they released the patch. And now we're waiting for the next one... For me Firaxis is on time- I expect another big improvement befor Christmas...

Does anyone remember how long it took for CiV to get the SDK out of the gates...?
