Fallen Enchantress

Relax, that's only true for the beta version of the game. The release version won't have any always-online DRM, just a one time activation which is perfectly acceptable.

Like I said, no DRM for me -- including "one time activation" AKA "it still means play until the company doesn't feel like letting you play anymore". Not at all acceptable.

Stardock has always been very mindful of the consumer's rights, and forcing the Steam spyware and DRM down our throat would be a rather bad move - I know I would really hate it at least.

False. They just held out (a pretty good) façade that they were, while they were just as bad as Valve and any other DRM company. I mean really -- "you must have an account and online registration to download PATCHES, and only via an in-game patcher"? Really?

I could MAYBE tolerate it if it were one time *ever* activation, that I had to get a watermarked/cryptographic certificate or something that, if I kept it backed up, I'd never, ever again have to interact with the company again in any way (including future reinstalls; which also includes standalone patches), I might consider that.

Dude, Jon Shafer sits in the cubicle next to yours. It's on his hard drive! :mischief:

 - THAT would be awesome...

Spoiler :

I only got the civ5 demo. I don't have any money ;) It wasn't better than BtS, but it was still a good game.

Anyway, still enjoying Civ5 and looking forward to Fallen Enchantress. :goodjob:

That never occured to me. JON!!!

Geesh, in that case you don't get to play ANY PC game these days... unless of course you pirate them and use this as your excuse to do so. Stardock had the online activation since like forever and you always needed to have an online registration to download patches. I never had an issue with that, and if I had it still wouldn't have stopped me from playing the unpatched games.

I remember games from a long time ago where you needed to look up words in the game manual or tedious stuff like that, the original Railroad Tycoon had something like that if I recall correctly.

And what do you call The Witcher 2? If you buy it from GoG you get a "DRM" free copy of the game... however, to download it you'll still need a GoG account (same to download patches).

You have a pre-order version FE and you can play in Beta 3 :). This Game is so great!

If we were talking about FFH 3, then I would have already pre-ordered and would be playing it.:) But, this is not FFH3 and I hate playing betas, it always ruins the fun of release for me. Also, I wasn't impressed with the first Elemental game...so I'll wait for a demo.

I hope Kael doesn't abandon FFH, I played FFH2 way more than I ever played the standard Civ 4 game. I'd love to see it for Civ 5, I'd even pay for it. Maybe FFH3 as a DLC on Steam?

A: I play plenty. They're out there. I'm blessed that shooters aren't my preferred genre (if they were, this would be far more difficult to say).

B: That's not DRM. DRM and such copy protection, while possibly related, are not the same. DRM is the ability of the company unilaterally to revoke access to the product from you. Losing the manual/disk/cryptocertificate/etc is your own fault to lose access to it, not theirs. Online activation servers go down, all the time. This revokes your ability to use the product.

C: The difference here is you can perpetually keep your downloadeded & patched version of the gog.com downloaded software, and install it at your will, whenever and however you desire. There may be an "in game patching system" for some of their releases, but it's for convenience. The installers -- always which includes the full latest patches -- can be downloaded individually (through the web site, normal web connection) and kept. If the company goes under or otherwise disappears, you don't lose the product. "Live patching" systems that require in-game/account-based patching, you won't be able to have the most-updated versions of the product once the update service goes away.

However, this will be my last reply to this thread. I do not want to wander any further from its main topic. I did feel the need to address this DRM apologism I, somehow, see everywhere.

I have to say, the next few years are going to be pretty awesome for turn based strategy games.

There's a lot of cool stuff in the pipeline.

You're right about that, but right now I miss the innovation and creativity. I tried the Warlock demo, for instance, and it just looked like a weak copy of Civilization 5. I hope Fallen Enchantress can bring something new to the table, and I think the little known Endless Space also looks quite interesting for Space 4X.

I hope the indie producers and smaller publishers have courage to keep their strategy games detailed, complex, innovative, creative and not follow the dumbing-down trend some of the mega-games publishers seem to do. I hope they won't just follow.

and what about us who don't want to bet money on possible success or catastrophe?

Touched last weekend Warlock and luckily thanks to demo decided that it isn't game for me...

I think after the Elemental fiasco (which I only read about) and CiV debacle (which I experienced first hand) caution is in place at least for me.
I made enough wrong buys in last 2 years (from BW, Firaxis and some more).

SOOOO....

Will there be an demo after release or shortly before release?

@Kael

hoping you will throw a bone to people liking big empires...That's one of my biggest peeves with civ V, that the design tried too hard to battle people who like playing with bigger empires, but not so big (the 3 civ ideal by lead designer was not enough, but otoh my ideal number of cities is certainly not bigger then 10).

Since I didn't read anything more then this thread I can't judge the current situation.

Would be nice to hear how you approach city tiles/citizens and that things...I saw some interesting ideas in the Warlock game I mentioned.

edit:
oh and would be nice if the fantasy empire would look like fantasy empire and not bunch of stuff thrown around big map ;-)

and bring back tactical combat on different map like in master of magic! :-) but if that's not already in game it probably is too late to change (one of things Warlock imo did wrong...mixing strategy map with tactical)

To Mr Draginol
That is very reassuring to hear Mr. Draginol. I do like very much your approach about the pc games in general and one-time-DRM. Capital, really. Gamer's Bill of Rights is like doctor's orders. If only others would follow...

To Mr Kael
Had a blast with Fall from Heaven, hope this turns out to be at least equally splendid.
Too bad Rise and Rule for Civilization 4 did not appeared out of somewhere.

To Mr Jon Shafer
Ahm. Yes. Fine weather today, eh?

So true, that mod changed the way I think about Civ. I'm honestly amazed that it hasn't been adopted as a game mode for the base game.

The only reason i would buy this game is because of FFH.

How will multiplayer be handled?

Personally, I think I owe Kael at least 40 bucks for the amazing fun that was FFH.
So I'll buy the game and hope his touch continues.

To Mr. Shafer, well done for taking the abuse - however Civ 5 was weak :deadhorse:

Hopefully it will get better.
