Follow the CNN story at http://edition.cnn.com/2011/11/04/world/europe/guy-fawkes-mask/index.html?

Sounds very interesting and is to happen tomorrow... Members of the Occupy and Anonymous movements are set to march to the houses of British Parliament on Saturday, wearing Guy Fawkes masks as in the V for Vendetta movie.

Surprised there was not a thread about this. What do you think of the symbolic gesture, and the story?

Also:

Guy Fawkes was the only man ever to enter Parliament with honest intentions.

Wasn't Guy Fawkes fighting for the restoration of the Catholic church in England? Probably not the guy you want representing this movement...

I think the main point was he wanted to blow up the houses of parliament, which is like an anachists wet dream...

Its a good movie, but seriously quit using it as inspiration.

What are they actually marching about? The article mentioned who was marching, where the mask came from and talked about the mask is general but it didn't seem to mention what the point was.

To restore the Catholic monarchy obviously!

I've not seen the movie. The book is really good though - better than Watchmen.

Haha that would be hilarious if a bunch of English Catholics did a counter march to put the Habsburg pretender on the throne of England, haha.

Yeah I think the primary intent is symbolicism for anarchism. Guess they feel lucky that capital punishment for treason is abolished in the UK?

Personally I don't find anything praiseworthy about Guy Fawkes. He was a would be murderer himself. Being an anti-royalist is probably somewhat praiseworthy in the modern era, but Fawkes was trying to replace one king with another, on as a Catholic vs. Protestant thing.

This mostly cements my opinion that Anonymous is a bunch of immature anarchists craving attention for themselves.

Only just now? My cement's been dry for a long time now.

So what part of Britain is fascist? The part that opposes OWS?

So what part of Britain is fascist? The part that opposes OWS?

The part that these folks don't agree with...

That probably includes meritocracy, capitalism, conservatism, crime-fighting, and being told to do things that they don't want to do. Textbook case of narcissism.

They're not idolizing Guy Fawkes. They're idolizing V.

Well that guy killed a bunch of innocent soldiers who were just following orders, and destroyed priceless examples of fine architecture.
(semi-humor on the first part, the second part really did bug me...)

Either way, they don't have the best role model.

"Unite Against Facism" paradoxically is probably the most fascist organisation in teh UK :P Well that's a bit OTT, obviously Combat 18 + BNP have the monopoly on that:P

Still, an anarchist is very different than a Catholic restorationist. Even if they're not being as violent Although if I were in charge of Anonymous and I were choosing a representative comic character, I'd go with the alternate universe Batman of Red Son.
