Goodness gracious, this is a very scary scenario. Could it really happen?

That article is one of the most poorly written pieces I have ever had the displeasure to read. It makes zero sense, and assumes too many things.

Could Europe break up and fall into war again? Certainly! The USA could too, for that matter, given the right conditions.

Their military spending is not the same though. France doesn't have to rely on the sea for energy, and since both Gibralter is within range of their land based aircraft and currently the UK has no serious carrier force to speak of making the Med a French lake only vulerable to a an outnumberd British sub force is a real possiblity.

At the same time a good portion of UK sea lanes are will within French air attack range.

The idea of Britian landing a land force able to create and hen hold a continental foothold is not really a serious position. Since Britian has let is navy degrade so badly, it literally has no advantage of France at all, and France has the natrual advantage of not being an island. You bottle up the UK as best as you can, and wait them out.

Bah, when the EU goes to hell whichever country had a government crazy enough to send "peacekeepers" into another would find itself at war against more than it could handle, with a revolution simultaneously brewing at home and only fed by the war - it wouldn't be like WW1, with idiots enlisting for the "glory" of it and forgetting the troubles at home; it would be a hated war.

I mentioned that Sarkozy wouldn't be stupid enough. On second though, he's the type which might be stupid enough. He - and the french fifth republic - would last about two weeks. And then... well, if any opposing blocks again truly form in Europe, they'll be opposed across the Rhine. As usual. And britain would be on the french side, again.

EDIT: The Daily Mail probably just annoyed that Merkel is mildly more attractive than Thatcher, and Carla Bruni is far hotter than "gorse face" Samantha Cameron. Even Gordon Brown's wife is hotter than Mrs. Cameron
