FEB 10TH: Day of action against Scientology

Specific forums on image boards are often identified via a single letter code like this. What /b/ stands for...frankly, I don't know, and that's perfectly fine by me.

/b/ stands for random. Having the letter b itself was a random choice to represent random. Its the part of the image board where virtually anything goes and is accepted.

You're not supposed to talk about /b/ because they consider the internet to be very serious business sometimes, and keeping themselves 'anonymous' is part of that. If people don't even know what /b/ is how will they know who anon is (besides being an internet hate machine)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//b/#.2Fb.2F

"meaning /b/'s posting rate had attained an average of more than 111,000 posts per day."

Before I can comprehend this thread, please answer the following:
Will try, but keep in mind that this is a form of ritual magic. It makes its own sense, so it doesn't have to make sense to you.

Is this "anonymous" really referring to anonymous people, or is it some "handle" for an online persona?
"Anonymous" is the gestalt of all /b/ users and posters. There are guides for him like The Well Cultured Anonymous.

What are chans?
Forums. "*chan is a term coined on Wikichan to refer to any website/image board that ends in -chan."

What is /b/?
An entity with such a large cultural influence that the name is usually used as a descriptor. Check out http://www.wikichan.org/index.php//b/ .

Why can I not talk about /b/?
Because you have to ask what it is and haven't understood it yet. Once you understand it, you won't talk about it.

Is this an actual, physical protest where people are supposed to show up? And if so, have they obtained the proper permits?
Only incidentally, and probably yes.

If it is not a real, physical protest, is it some asinine online attack against a legal entity?
"asinine online attack" doesn't begin to cover it. Think along the lines of "cultural assault meets DDoS". Lots of illegal things, but everything vaguely justifiable, such as signing CoS members up for spam, both electronic and paper. Plastering Lisa McPherson leaflets on scientology property.

They're still just nerds though, lol.

Nerds versus Cultists... It's a battle of epic proportions.

If you don't know, then you don't need to know. The OP is being very irresponsible by posting this here and he may find himself in a lot of trouble.

Rofl.

No one talks about fight club.

Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Whats irresponsible about the op?

Oh..I know. You cant talk about it.

Pure. Comedy. Gold.

But wth. If they want to take on Tom Cruise, I am more than happy to sit back, eat popcorn and watch the entertainment.

Someone should go down there and film this. I love those videos on youtube where these fat spotty geeks embarass themselves.

Actually, once you get to level 2 of the explanation, you'll see that this isn't how it works. "Do not talk about /b/" is not a rule meant to forbid people from talking about /b/, it's meant to prevent people trying to talk about /b/ when they can't talk about /b/.

***** and its ilk take themselves way too seriously...

The whole chan thing originates here in Japan, where 2chan is the biggest forum on the web. 2chan also has it's whole subculture going on and I gather the others like ***** are just imitators. 2chan doesn't do the whole childish grandiose inflated sense of importance as compensation for utter lack of real life sense of worth thing so far as I'm aware though. 2chan is best known for 'densha otoko', which is, well, worlds away from this nerds who watched the matrix too much rubbish.

I don't hate groups of people on principle. But scientologists are the exception for me. From what I hear they are too dangerous to associate with.

Cool, at least it will keep both of them busy.

Apparently these people will have nothing to do on Valentines day so they will waste their time and money on this tripe.

It's 4 days before Valentine's Day :mischief:

And it's to mark Lisa McPherson's birthday I think.

I'm impressed, it's come to the attention of The Economist.

Now Scientology is under attack from a group of internet activists known only as Anonymous. Organised from a Wikipedia-style website (editable by anyone) and through anonymous internet chat rooms, “Project Chanology”, as the initiative is known, presents no easy target for Scientology's lawyers. It is promoting cyberwarfare techniques normally associated with extortionists, spies and terrorists. Called “distributed denial of service attacks”, these typically involve using networks of infected computers to bombard the target's websites and servers with bogus requests for data, causing them to crash. Even governments find this troublesome.

Anonymous is also hoping to galvanise public opinion with a mass “real-world” protest outside every Scientology office worldwide on February 10th. But its best weapon may be ridicule. The group got going in reaction to efforts to ban an internal Scientology video of Mr Cruise that leaked onto the internet. The star appears to discuss his beliefs with a degree of incoherence and exaggeration that might lead some to question Scientology's effects on its adherents' sanity. A Scientology spokesman says it has been selectively edited. Several internet sites have taken it down after threats of lawsuits. But it keeps popping up.

This is all very exciting to be honest. I've heard a lot about this Anonymous and their ability to wreak havoc on peoples lives. I'll be most impressed if Anon actually contributes to the downfall of Scientology.

If it did, would you be seeing fireworks going off everywhere on the planet and little Ewoks dancing? ;)

is this really gonna happen? or is it a joke?

and CG could you make your avatar nothing but animated cleavage please?

I have to admit that even though I hate the chans, I hate the Scientoloonies even more - more for the heavy-handed "Do not oppose us, or our army of trained attack lawyers will get you" than for any reason - they're practically using the legal system as their own private inquisition. My sympathies are firmly with the chans on this one.

Even if they are silly nerds.
