Finally beating Emperor

Now maybe not ( just seeing the save would say something more concrete ), but remeber that priests are a decent conversion of food to hammers , especially if you don't have much :) resources to boot. And obelisks are the earliest specialist slot building avaliable in game... not mentioning that a early settled Prophet is a huge asset

1. Why is "block cathy not 1W as it was planned (IIRC)?

2. Why is thebes working mines instead of cottages?? It would grow and could simultaneously hire specs. You're still not really using the mids now.

@silverbullet: You made a slight mistake in your post about writing and deficit research. It should be: After writing, turn research to 0% until your library in the capital is built. Then turn research to 100% to research aesthetics or abc or whatever you're researching.

edit: Everest: Don't ever use that avoid growth thingie!! At least unless you set a reminder for every turn that it's still on :crazyeye: High-pop cities are :king:, especially earlygame.

1. I woud've settled 1W, but rolo wrote 1S of the pigs woud be a good place (rolo, can you tell me your thoughts?) and I tought it'd block of cathy earlier. Still...

2. Yes, I saw that too and deactivad it so I coud work the cottages and grow. Stupid me. I use these buttons so I don't have to watch my cities that closely (so far unfun to me), but I guess that has to change now.

I still understood what silverbullet meant to say. I normally do this but forgot this time...I guess I need a pen and paper.

Your advice is sophisticated. :king:

A couple of suggestions after looking at the save:
  1. Focus on whipping a forge and then chopping/building the Colossus in your Cathy blocking city - grabbing MC early will go to waste otherwise.
  2. Trade pigs to Hannibal for wine to get some more happy on board.
  3. I'd consider using the GE you're likely to get in the capital to rush the GLib in your specialist city to gain maximum benefit by pairing it with the NE there.
  4. Looking down the road towards bureaucracy, there may also be something to be said for moving the capital to the cottage spot since it's got a massive head-start on commerce generation and is more centrally located.
EDIT: on the topic of running priests in the capital, it's not a bad idea since you're effectively converting 2:food: to 1:hammers:, 1:gold:, 3:science: and 3:gp:. That'll get you more great people faster, but a lot depends on whether you've got any use/plan for prophets.

I gave a small look to your save.....

1- Both Thebes and Cottage deserved a forge. You have silver and that makes forge a :) building. That means one more worked cottage in those cities.
2-Don't chop polar forests if you are not planning to use the tile.
3- why did you whipped Silver city? so little food there......
4- Block Cathy needs a axe or two, to prevent a landing ;) ( BTW it looks that my suggestion worked well .... there is no possible way of cathy to pass if you don't OB with her ;) )
5- Yahoi is a keeper. Start thinking on that....
6- Have you considered to go hindu? There is no visible reason to not to.
7- Any Idea of how to use the next GP ( 82% GE , 18% GS , 2 turns ) ? If a GS it is a definite academy... if a GE... :dunno:

@rolo: I'm talking of the "Block Cathy" city, which should've been 1W. It blocks just as good and has many more land tile than the location has now. As I see it all the coast tiles are blocked with the first border pop (when city is 1W) and cathy on emperor won't have run out of place to settle and ship over settlers via galley already me thinks.

@Everest: Would you mind shrinking your pics to, say 800*600?

Mystyfly - thanks for catching that mistake, I fixed it so I don't look stupid in public
Now someone else is looking stupid in public ;) j/k

What are the future plans for settling? I strongly suggest settling only coastal cities now until you're done for two reasons: 1st to keep the island "clean" and 2nd to get those nice trade routes.

You should have settled 1W for the extra grassland hill. Once you have the first border pop, catherine can't slip by with a galley.

Why is your capital building a barracks? You still have expanding to do.

Why is your new food city building a library? Chop or whip monument, send a work boat over from your blocking city. And excessive wonder gambits aside, that city should be pumping workers and settlers.

That'll get you more great people faster, but a lot depends on whether you've got any use/plan for prophets.
Theology for trade and maybe the Apo gambit. Its shrine as well. No more so far.

3- why did you whipped Silver city? so little food there......
If I remeber correctly I whipped to get the boat out. Is that okay? I don't play on any more whipping there.

Anything else: Simply yes, thanks.

@Everest: Would you mind shrinking your pics to, say 800*600?
I will shrink them.

@vicawoo: The new food city doesn't need a monument, I'm creative. So what do you suggest instead until workers/boats arrive?

I wouldn't do that. AP will also give hammers to Cathy and the other hindus, only their hammers get multiplied and becomes way more than you'll ever get. Also when lots of civs are hindu, the chance increases that it will be hindu anyway. No need to put your hammers into it.

Whipping out a WB for scouting is okay I guess.

You can't build monuments, you can only build obelisks :p
These enable priest slots which are always handy in a foodrich city ;)

Hm, I was talking about a christian Apo. Since I'm spiritual I coud switch for only 5 turns, get the hammer for myself and maybe even go for an AP diplo win. Bad idea?

Okay, so an obelisk in the new city.

AP win requires you to spam missionaries and get the religion to every civ. You decide whether you like this.

Building a christian AP is a much better idea. It would make sure the AP doesn't interfere with war plans :hammer:

I usually don't bother building it though. Again, it's your choice.

Turns out I got a GScientist in Thebes and built an academy there. No GE, so we built the GLib in Thebes. In case you wonder about memphis...I opened borders with cathy since I coud just close them when she arrives with a galley. It worked perfectly once, but when I reopened them she came back immediately so I coudn't cancel the deal and had to build a city there. At least that captured her gally where it is now so she has a settler that can't built a city for a while. Still I learned something here. No more playing around with 10 turn treaties.

A few turns ago I got a GE and have a settler ready in the capital. What to do with them? I guess I'd settle crab.

Diplomacy
Cathy's friendly so I don't expect any war soon. I know she can still be bribed into one and that doesn't make me feel very comfortable. I've traded silver for sheep.
Spoiler foreign tech :

I'd like to go for lib and then cuirassier war. I still have to get a lvl4 unit for HE.
