Finally! TESLA COILS!!! Sort of...

It is not surprising that the military takes the concept of a tesla coil and invest in turning it into a weapon rather than a civilian agency taking the concept and invest in turning it into a useful civilian application.

Who says they can't?

They can.

That's my point.

So your observation "point" was that military invests in military stuff and civilian agencies can also invest in civilian stuff?

That's some insight.

Yes we [civilian research agencies] do [research into civilian applications for new technology/science].

You seem overly offended for some reason. Does it bother you that I claimed no civilian research agencies have utilized the concept behind tesla coils in an overly effective and ingenious manner like the military has?

I would be willing to take that statement back if you'd link me to an article of something a civilian research agency has done with this concept that is both invested in and used.

It's surprising that military application is the first priority and not civilian application.

Oh who am I kidding, this is to be expected.

What would this be a civilian applilcation for?

Learn to read the thread please.

I have, and I asked you a simple, easy to read question. You being insulting doesnt change said question.

Is your point in posting in this thread merely to whine? Or would you like to actually engage in some discussion?

So again, what kind of civilian applications do you see this tech being used legitimately for? For someone so interested in how others read that shouldnt be too hard.

You're missing the point. Your original post was essentially nonsense on the grounds that civilian research agencies do actual, you know, research. That they're later to the party than the military should come as no surprise given the massive R&D budget thrown at such things.

You asked a question in response to a post that was originally meant to be a joke but I somehow managed to forget to add the actual joke. If you're so interested in my opinion, you would have quoted the clarification post, not the failed joke post. You are just looking for a rise out of me and a potential chance to go "Nope you're wrong".

There are a lot of civilian applications for this technology (note, this doesn't mean there is a civilian application for this SPECIFIC iteration, but the technology behind it). You don't need me to guide you the way.

edit @ Czerth: I kind of said it was no surprise. Point?

Nope. I asked you a question because I was interested in what civilian application you think this has.

These numbers may sound huge to the layman, but for anybody working in the field it is not that impressive. 50GW of power in 2ps are only 100mJ. Such systems are commercially available and if you have enough money you can just go ahead and buy one. The applications include laser cutting and drilling and microprocessing in general.

And if you look into civilian research labs, they can actually beat these numbers by two orders of magnitude or so. So it is not like the military is making breakthrough research here, but they're using existing technology and try to make a weapon that works in the field. Civilian scientists would have no problem unleashing the same torrent of destruction, but unlike the military they're not paid to make big explosions. As research equipment is expensive, they usually try their hardest not to destroy anything in an uncontrolled way. At these powers it is not hard to create lightening, it is hard to not create it and to avoid burning everything.

@ Czerth: I kind of said it was no surprise. Point?

Listen Synesthesia, I'm jes' sayin' that your observation is kind of peripheral and frankly obvious. It's a bit like going into a space thread and saying "no surprise that space is so void of breathable air given that it is void of breathable air."

But since your intention was to just say obvious stuff I guess I can't get mad.

Nope. I asked you a question because I was interested in what civilian application you think this has.

Wireless energy transfer is one I can think up of. An electrolaser is not a good candidate for it because of the danger and low efficiency involved but I clearly stated the technology BEHIND it.

Military scientists go for military uses, civilian scientists go for civilian uses. Military gets more funding and more priority with their studies than civilians. I never claimed I had extensive insight to provide, I simply said it was no surprise that this technology would be perverted to a weapon rather than a tool.

"Perverted"?

This complete lack of respect for nations and their peoples deserves no place on this forum.
Nations don't deserve respect. But people do.

Nations =/= people.

What would this be a civilian applilcation for?
As I said, deer hunting. Kills and cooks all in one go.
Unfortunately it wouldn't work well for mounting heads, what with the flesh scorched off their skulls.
