Firaxis announces new title: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

PC gaming died with the cancellation of STALKER 2. Just bite the bullet and get a PS360.

If you ask from me, PC has the best games and even if some game is released on PC and consoles (like DX:HR) then the PC wins with its better controls and graphics, but mainly because of the better controls. If PC gaming dies then I would propably stop playing, but thats not going to happen.

STALKER 2 wasn't canceled, the people who said it was were not employed at GSC Gameworld and they are still working on the game. Not too mention that any assumption that PC gaming is "dying" is BS for a long list of reasons. Whether or not Firaxis screws up on their X-Com game won't make a difference either given there are two other remakes in the works with different developers and the original games are still available.

Oh. When I read not a shooter in the first post I assumed it meant this game wasn't the FPS that I've already heard about (which is old news, as you said). On closer inspection I see that "not a shooter" really meant that it is some dude's opinion that this game will not be a typical FPS.

In any case... I personally have no interest in a first-person x-com game.
Actualy, 2K Marin and 2K Games (they have Firaxis) appear to both have been working on an X-COM game, with 2K Marin's being the shooter and Firaxis' one being the TBS. I'm willing to bet that after the rather poor reaction the FPS XCOM got, the bosses at 2K had Firaxis ramp up the development of their XCOM game (which may explain why we haven't heard much from them about Civ5 and the poor performance of CivWorld).

If you look at the official site, there are two different XCOMs, one is the the FPS and the other (Enemy Unknown) is the TBS.

Based off the GameInformer interview with the Firaxis developers of Enemy Unknown, it is going to be a TBS. One interesting bit of information in the Gameinformer interview is one of the developers saying that XCOM was an ideal travel game so they want the new XCOM to play just fine on laptops. That is excellent news for me because while my laptop is not bad, it is not a gaming machine of unrestricted power.

EDIT: Gameinformer has the first preview of the game including screenshots, and it definately is a TBS.

Brilliant.

Is it me, or did people forget about XCom3? If you kept to the classic rules and dump the abomination that is real time combat, the game wasn't that bad when compared to XCom1 and 2. It was, in many ways, superior, although there were things about it that would drive veteran XCom players bonkers (limited weaponry and personnel, for example, and the lack of base space and map coverage in many of the original maps).

I just wished that they didn't implement the limited alien craft nonsense in XCom3. Once you survived the initial waves, it became laughingly easy because the aliens ran out of ships to attack you with!

Whether the game is any good or not, Firaxis will probably still be requiring Steam to use it.

A Steam requirement means no sale no matter how good the game is.

This is old news, as it was reviewed at least 12-18 months ago (In fact, found my review copy of PC Powerplay (AUS) from June 2010, which had XCOM on the cover). It is NOT a TBS game. It is actually (according to the review) a FPS game, although from what they say, I'd probably describe it as a RPG.

As pointed out above, you guys are confused. There are two new x-com games coming. One we don't care about (First person shooter), and the Firaxis turn-based original remake.

Yeah, X-Com, Jagged Alliance 2, and Civ are my top three favorite games! I can't believe so many haters are in here!

For shame!

Thanks for the clarification (and to Ajidica above). I wasn't aware of the two XCOM games. I was actually looking forward to the first-person / RPG/Shooter one as well. If there is a TBS one as well, I'll probably get them both!

As far as I'm concerned, the FPS game looks like it could be alright, if there is a bit outside of JUST the shooting. At least it'll be different from a brown dusty shooter killing some foreigners with accents. We'll see, but when they announced they were reviving x-com, then showed us an FPS game, it was hard not to feel slightly betrayed. I don't know what they were thinking as the only people who would care about the x-com name were mostly people who had played the original and have interest in strategy. They should have announced both games at the same time. I'm thinking they probably decided to make the TBS strategy game because of the reaction they got after they announced the shooter... And that shooter game seems to have been delayed and little news have been coming out of its dev team... If this were 2001 I'd start thinking it was on the verge of cancellation. In 2012 you never know.

Rub'Rum

The graphics in those screen shots look pretty good. My main gripes about the original XCOM was that mind control garbage and the cheats in the shooting used instead of any kind of AI. Hope Firaxis removes these, and develops an AI for the game. Their past history doesn't inspire much hope this will happen, and like their other remakes, Firaxis will rely upon pretty graphics to hide the fact the basic game itself has only been minimally upgraded.

I already have the original and TFTD. EU is so good I still play it. Why would I want a remake?

They should concentrate on making Civ V an interesting and playable game instead of making such a game !
It's not worth the effort.

Better just to move on to Civ 6 (starting from scratch) and to accept that every odd-numbered Civ title (except for the original of course) has been a miss.

The sooner Civ 5 is buried the faster I can stop playing Civ IV and move on to a truly worthy successor. :)

I'm fine with Firaxis doing other games than Civ games (even though I personally might not be interested). In fact, they really should do a lot of stuff, to get their creative juices flowing again and to regain that true hunger for creating a true Civ masterpiece only abstinence can bring!

Not turning off the lifesupport that is keeping the rotten carcass that is Civ V only prolongs the suffering. That game will never be great.

Cheers,

Whether you like it or not, Civ 5 seems to have sold pretty well and is still one of the most played games at any time on Steam. Sooooo, for them it might have been a resounding success, who knows. I really don't think they call it a "miss".

Don't get me wrong, I'd like any Civ related news, whether it's expansion or Civ 6. I played and enjoyed every iteration of Civ kind of equally, I must be crazy.
