Ugh, this thread is so far off topic. Please kill it, and any other 'when is the patch coming' threads until there is a patch released.

I'm sorry to tell you guys but tests have shown that the pc game market is rising in demand. Not to mention the money they make in the pc market

Well people can make statistics say anything they like. But anyway, nobody is saying the PC game market is diminishing. There's no question that the gaming market is thriving and growing. It's just that the it's becoming more and more obvious that console games are leading the current growth of the gaming market. Further, their share of the market is growing. PC games will be around for a long time, probably never going away. But I think you will see that many highly touted titles will eventually migrate almost exclusively to console. The reasons are simple:

1. Standardized systems that are extremely stable.
2. Hardware and Software support is very reliable because fixing any single issue fixes it for everybody.
3. Maintenance costs are vastly cheaper.
4. Standardized systems for developers means titles can be produced far more quickly.
5. Hardware can be mass produced.

All of that means that a producer can expect to sell millions of games that will likely have no problems or problems that can quickly be addressed across the board, thus driving maintenance costs to near nothing in comparison to PC games. The profit margins on console games versus their respective titles on PCs will very much shape the future of the gaming industry.

I don't think this a bad thing at all btw! I'm looking forward to getting titles that run smooth and beautiful right out of the box. It's just that for Civ IV, I really want that modability. For games like this, it's hard to imagine PC's ever really going away.

There is one other possibility. The game makers could start releasing SDKs for games on the consoles themselves, where modifications are encouraged. This would be sweet because then there would be a gauranteed standard system on which everybody is developing their mods. But that is far in the future, if ever.

Dear Arguers
It is every consumers right to complain about a malfunctioned (at least for some) product. I believe everyone that has posted here has its own amount of right. Since the job of patching this incredibly addicted game is not in our hands its meaningless to continue complain. I believe that both companies Firaxis and T2I have the appropriate proffesionalism and sensitinity on doing the right thing at the right time. I believe that they have gotten the point already and that they are doing working double time to correct the errors. I have bought other games that Firaxis Made (Alpha Centauri and Pirates) and i still enjoy play them. I am willing to wait for the patch and i am sure that they will deliver.

Looks like no patch until the week before Xmas.

It is interesting when you scan this thread, if you have time, and we do, and see the evolution of our frustration.

First – Elation! The patch is already developed! We will have it tomorrow!

Next – What is taking so long with the patch!?!

Followed by – What a lousy job Firaxis and 2K did, let’s string them up!!!

Then – Shut up about the Patch, Let’s talk about something else.

Followed by – “PC or not to PC”

To finally – Who can we blame, how about the beta testers!

Patch Watch - Day 29

I believe PC gaming is in trouble because games are starting to look and run better on consoles especially as HDTV prices are slowly coming down.

Yes, but as long as they have to cater to people with low-def TVs, the games won't be able to really use HDTV's higher resolution to its full potential. And it's a shame. Action games like Call of Duty are fine, but you could never squeeze the all the tiny info you need for a game like Civ4 in a 640x480 screen (or 15% less, considering the overscan area that disappears behind most TVs' bezels).

You could, of course, release a 360 game that requires an HDTV, but that would be marketting suicide at this point, and would lead to much the same type of outraged complaints as what we have seen in this tread ("What do you mean, it won't work on my TV? I paid good money for this game and those #!$#@!@ better fix it!!!")

Well this is the beauty of console development. The output device is third party. HDTV is a standard protocol. All the developers have to do is make sure the whatever goes out is standard. There's no law that says a console cannot have multiple protocols going out. This could be set by automatic detect or software selection or hardware selection, whatever, it doesn't matter. The console stays the same for every game produced on it. Those games are gauranteed to run, and they most likely will, no problem, right out of the box. Console games have a bright, bright future.

Patch Watch - Day 29

LMAO. This was maybe the best post in this thread. :goodjob:
I think it has turned into the only place we unluckies are welcome. :p
Now its more of a 'Misc - subject at hand thread'

I personally dont see PC gaming ever dying. But I dont want to get into that personally, I will just read the arguements as I wait. ;)

I'm not sure why you quoted me, because you sailed right by my point. Which was that for games to be guaranteed to work on the new HD-capable consoles, they can't depend on HDTV, making the consoles useless for games that require high resolutions.

I have absolutely nothing about console-gaming. I actually quite enjoy it for the right titles. But I don't think consoles are anywhere close to completely replacing PC gaming.

If the game consoles had DVI out there would be no problem hooking them up to an LCD designed for a PC with the DVI in. Even the standard D sub for a standard monitor. I wouldn't mind too much having a console in my office, hooked up to my KVM switch, so I could use a PS2 mouse, keyboard, and 19" LCD, as well as a USB controller designed for that system. Computer monitors has a much better display than any almost any TV type monitor, and I wouldn't keep my wife from watching th OC!

Console gaming has a lot of evolution coming. Soon they will have resolution options so you can adjust to whatever screen it is hooked up to, and you can load drivers for special controllers into some sort of memory.

Imagine hooking up a controller then turning on your console. The first screen is, "please insert installation disk for controller !@.^&45T&#" after about 30 seconds it says "please remove installation disk, shut down, and play/load games as normal" Consoles would be alright with standard keyboards, mice, and joysticks, and whatever standard controller it came with.

This may be deviating from the simplicity of consoles, but the internal hardware is still standard, and you could completely skip the special controller options if it was offered with standard keyboard and mouse compatibility and came with an awesome controller to begin with.

IF anyone at 2k or Firaxis is reading this. Please give us the option to DL the Beta Patch. If it isnt QA tested yet just dont enable it for the ingame DL. But Please let us have the option of testing out the beta patch.

Bad idea. Then you'd have people whining about how the beta patch messed up their system and blaming Firaxis for relasing it before it was ready. :-/ Seriously, these people will whine about anything, so don't give them yet another excuse.

These people?
As in the ones who paid for a product that is broken?

Size matters. For $1200, I can buy a 52" HDTV which can crank out 1080i. This is close enough to monitor resolutions for me to not mind the difference, and is far larger than any PC monitor I know of, much less one I could purchase for $1200. Playing video games on my old roommate's 65" HDTV was...an experience. And that was only in SD.

This is exactly right. The whole point of consoles is out-of-the-box functionality. So far, customers (and therefore game publishers) have been reluctant, at best, to buy into add-on hardware (DDR has been a notable exception). As soon as you have to start configuring your console to work right, you've lost a big chunk of the target market.

In general, people view video game consoles in much the same way as stereo components. You plug them in, connect the TV, and you're all set to go. A console which deviates too far from that ideal and towards being a PC risks suffering the fate of MS' Media Center PCs: being relegated to, at best, a niche market.

So far, people seem to not want computers in their living rooms. They want entertainment appliances.

See? That's exactly what I'm talking about. Let's look at the facts here:

1. Civ 4 has problems.
2. Civ 4 doesn't work for everybody.
3. Many of the people who have problems are outright blaming Firaxis / Taketwo
4. A patch is currently being worked on.
5. The people who blamed Firaxis / Taketwo for releasing a "broken" game are now blaming them for being too slow in releasing the patch.
6. Said people don't care that they've already made their point. Said people don't care that a patch is due to be released any day now. They continue to complain and whine and *****, as if it's going to make the patch come out any quicker.

The truth is that it's getting highly annoying. There's no need to constantly repeat yourselves. Yes we know you're having problems. Yes we know you feel betrayed. Yes we know you would like the patch to come out as soon as possible. We know this already, so please either contribute something that's new / constructive, or don't contribute anything at all. This entire thread has become nothing more than a broken record, so what's the point of continued complaining? Just sit down, shut up, and wait for the patch already. Or better yet, come to the understanding that the entire world doesn't revolve around Civ 4, and go play another game while you wait. There ARE other games out there, you know.
