Hi, this is one of my first posts in civfanatics but i need some help.

I'm having trouble with the first war in my games at prince. I usually play Catherine(Best Leader IMO) with the occasional random leader.

How long do you hold off your first war until? And how many units do you use? Is it possible to wait until the medievil era on prince before war? Can I even wait for catapults? How many people do I try to kill?

Thanks:goodjob:

Hmm...depends on whether or not you have Warlords. I would disagree with you on Catherine in Warlords, but that's for another thread.

My first wars typically occur when my borders happen to come up against a rival nation's. If my opponent does not have any strategic resources, I will attack the moment I have axes--archers and warriors won't hold up for long. I'll take a city or two, but give myself insurance that my science does not fall below 50-60%. I wouldn't wait for the medieval period unless you have no choice--by then, your opponents will be well-entrenched.

I try to scout out my enemies as well as possible--if a city is guarded by a pair of archers (common), I take at least 4 axes or swords, whatever I have. I also send spears to guard against horses if they have them, extra axes vs. their melee units, etc.

As for knocking out civilizations...it depends on resources. I typically can't wipe out an empire and keep the land until after Code of Laws and the medieval age commerce technologies. Otherwise, science falls to far behind.

It's a lot easier with a shrine--I try to go for those whenever possible.

Oh sorry, i meant to say I still have vanilla where Cossacks are overpowered and she's creative and financial.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, one of my previous games, Alex was next to me and i didn't have much production so i used cottages to increase research to(hopefully) get to maces before he got to longbows. As we all would have guessed, he declared war. I was pretty much dead.

Oh...okay. That makes sense. I'd still argue with you and suggest Elizabeth (Financial and Philosophical, and an equally overpowered UU).

Hmm...sounds like you need to whip some more units early on. I'm guessing you had iron, judging that you were going for maces. Never wait--I suggest taking the initiative with a slave-produced army and going for the jugular, or at least crippling his commerce by pillaging cottages and strategic resources. Anything to get an edge.
