Football Thread No. 9

3rd! Know your club's history. :pat:

:suicide: But I don't really want to remember the 2005 final, playing at home, winning 1-0 at half time... and then losing to some ruskies. :(

You want me dying due to heart attack?
I think this leg is going to be more difficult for us than the one against Mancheser United and Schalke. I think that if there is a draw or victory from our side in first match I think we will be in final, if leastwise we are defeated by just one goal, we will see an open match in San Mames.
I think that the play off is 50-50 rigth now.

BTW in the almost impossible case of being on the final, which rival are you prefering?

Of course it will be harder, it's Sporting Clube de Portugal :D

I prefer Valencia. Atletico has Falcao and he's overpowered. I had to see him humiliate defenses for two seasons in here, I don't want to relive that period ever again.

BTW...

2:04 and on... shivers... It's time to do the same! On to our 2nd EUropean Trophy!

Good Job Chelsea! They have done extremely well to beat Barca!

@ Winston - the 5-1 Drubbing of Tottenham wasn't blamed on the officials, most of teh players recognised that and also the media. You just cannot ignore the scoreline in this game. If it was 2-1 you would have a point but definitely not.
Awesome goal by Drogba btw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6USyWoGJ8OQ @ 1:50ish for the opening past, what a finish!

So the semi-finals of the Champions League are apparently the point at which I tick over from wanting Real Barca to lose to wanting them to win..

Five of eight European semi-finalists being Spanish is interesting. It's like if the Scottish also-rans were still better than the English.

The Spanish teams have been the best for quite a while, the rest of Europe is the "also rans" Sporting vs Bilbao will be an interesting. watching the liquorice all sorts vs the Basque only team.

chelsea did do well, but they will get absolutely destroyed at the nou camp.

Last time they drew 0-0 at the Nou Camp. It could happen again. Chelsea's defensive unit was too strong for Barcelona in that whole game. I watched the full 90 minutes and I think Barca had only 3 proper goal scoring opportunities (of course i exclude half chances) - plus Drogba is in form right now and is causing a lot of problems for Barca. Maybe if Pique is fit Drogba can be neutralised. Chelsea have earned a lot of respect from me and I expect others, they have beaten Barcelona, how many teams can say that?! I think Barca have only lost two games in the past 15. I still think Barca are the best team in the world though:P

Yeah Drogba was pretty good this/last evening, I thought him and Puyol had a really good battle. Drogba might even have one more season in him, he is such a powerhouse. I was also impressed with Cahill today, I thought Messi would have ripped him to shreds. I am under the impression that the nou camp has a larger playing surface, I think Xavi who was ineffectual at the bridge will have a lot more space to pass the ball into so Chelsea have a lot of running to do next week.

I do think that both the castilians and catalans will progress, I think the incentive of playing their bitter rivals in the final will motivate them enough.

The defensive unit was too strong? Chelsea rode their luck. But still, my hopes for a Bayern-Chelsea final are still not entirely unreasonable! We could have a non-Spanish CL final and to hell with them. I'd support Bayern if such a thing happened of course.

I think Drogba definitely has it in him for another season -provided he doesn't get injured :undecide:.

I think we agree there, but my reasons are not just Falcao. I think that in overall Valencia is much more team. But,
- I do "not have to much sympathy" for Atletico de madrid
- IMHO, Valencia supporters are less problematic than Atletico's
- If there is something at which Atletico de Madrid is good is at motivation. Does not matter who is the coach, it is the clubs history. They can play their lives game in one day match. They can be ridiculous as well, but if they choose the first option, then it will be hard to beat them.
- Emery, his players, the club and the supporters are not in their best moment of the relationship (probably Emery will leave the club this year) which means that they may not play as good as they can.

I thought Chelsea were defending well but ulitmately, it was poor finishing by Barcelona that won Chelsea the match.

Nice matches. All semis were home victories!

Yes, that's true. But Chelski had one shot on target all game, and it was the one time they hit. Some people have argued that means that Barcelona defended well. I'd say that Chelsea simply resigned attacking.

The UEL semi-finals have started!

FORÇA SPORTING!

Congrats!!
Yesterday won the team who was best in the pitch

If I was told before starting that the result was going 2-1 I would accept it happily but I did not like the match the Athletic Club played. We renounced to our style, we lost to many passes in silly way, and people who was supposed to make a difference did not apear in hole match. I am really upset with the match, but not with the result.

At least there are still 90 minutes to change the situation

I watched it last week, absoultely brilliant

Thanks, now let's see what happens in Bilbao. :)

I must bow down before the supporters of Athletic, I wasn't there but many peers say they were amazing and lost with an incredible amount of fair-play. At half time one of our supporters groups hoisted a sign saying "RIP IÑIGO, 1312" at half time and everybody from Athletic and Sporting cheered eachother. At the end, I was told there was a friendly "war" of canticos and later many scarfs were exchanged. My peers say you were unlike all the other supporters we have hosted since they remember.

You don't see that ever happening in here. :goodjob:

I've come to the conclusion I really dislike the way Barcelona play. I just do not enjoy it, all they do is pass it around side to side untill the opposition gets so....BORED of the game they bug out, lose concentration and make an error - then Barcalona play a killer pass. I much, MUCH prefer end to end action, lots of attacking football, counter attacking stuff that makes me excited. Watching Xavi do a simple pass 7 yards to the right of him for the 99th time isn't.

WHOSE WITH ME?!

Well, I'm not too sure about that either TBH. I hear a lot about how technically gifted these Barcalonian players are when they have the ball and how well the pass it and control it and generally keep it well enough despite the pressure. That is quite good. The safe pass which is by far the majority of the passes they do, isn't a technically difficult pass by any means. I think when it is freaking impressive is when they make an error and Fabregas or Messi or any player they have has to dribble it around several players and pass it out to Xavi once again. You don't see ability like that often.
On the other hand if it was that easy other teams would copy that style too, so it's a tricky one. I haven't made up my mind on it :S
