And half a million away from Liverpool, I suppose.

Have I mentioned that Argentina has changed the format of its tournaments again?

Real Madrid somehow came back from behind despite being down to 10 men.

You might've heard that John Textor, a multi-club-owning billionaire, bought Botafogo in Brazil and activated pay-to-win mode.

Only a couple of months ago Botafogo won both the Brazilian league (after the famous mishap of 2023) and the continental title.
Textor has now grabbed all the money from competition prizes and the sales of his now highly-valued players, snatched it from the club (~55 million dollars) and used it to pay the debts of his French club Lyon, which was about to be relegated for financial wrongdoing by the French authorities.

What is interesting is that only 40 million of that money went towards paying the debts (total about €170 million) and the other 15 million euros or so went… whither?

Hmmmm, what a curious thing.

I know that in the US, and also in Europe, the new "FIFA Clubs World Cup" is not drawing crowds, but I kind expected it to have a dedicated thread in CFC, or at least, a mention in a football-related one.

The tournament has been interesting so far, in that European teams are being less dominant than most of the press expected, save, arguably, PSG, but probably also Juventus. Yes, there is the Bayern result of 10 X 0, but the differential between one of the world's top sides and a semi-professional one is so grotesque that it almost doesn't count.

Also, some teams have been giving Europeans a run for their money, like the draws between Palmeiras X Port, Fluminense X Borussia, Boca Juniors X Benfica, Al Hilal X Real Madrid and Monterrey X Internazionale, all of them instances in witch an upset was possible, even deserved.

Today Brazil's Botafogo will be measured against the very impressive PSG side. Botafogo was probably Brazil's weakest debut in the tournament, and people here are curious if the trend will keep.

My Flamengo had a very dominant journey against Espérance Sportive de Tunis a few days ago, leaving a good impression. Many people here are saying that it's because Esperánce is a weak side, but I honestly thing it is hubris to assume that from part of our press. The African teams are there to prove themselves as just Brazilian ones, and only after a few matches will we know really the balance of power between less known squads. After tomorrow's matches between Flamengo X Chelsea and Esperánce X LAFC, the picture will be much clearer.

Im curious if people here are aware of the tournament, and how they feel about it, especially if someone believe a non-European side can go far (even all the way).

Regards :).

We are certainly aware of the tournament yes, but here it is regarded as a promotional event, not a "real" tournament.

Yet the spotlight isn’t only on the players. It’s on the funding. More specifically, it’s on Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which now sits at the heart of FIFA’s one billion dollar Club World Cup revival. Call it what you want, but this tournament isn’t just being played in America. It’s being bankrolled from Riyadh.

But I readily admit it is a good chance for non-European clubs to compete with the likes of PSG or RM, a victory is still a victory.

You've learned the first lesson it seems : for the Germans there is no such thing as a friendly :)
