Footy '08

Melbourne is a certainty for the wooden spoon, especially with Davey out. They've got Geelong at Skilled Stadium next week with the unfurling of the flag.

Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn and St Kilda are the genuine chances of winning a premiership this year. Brisbane, Fremantle, West Coast and Port Adelaide should round out the 8. 4 way race between Essendon, Carlton, Melbourne and Richmond for the spoon, although Richmond and Melbourne are most likely to be finishing down there.

I really love seeing a Collingwood supporter with lots of confidence, coz you just know what's around the corner..... COLLIWOBBLES!!!! - A train wreck waiting to happen. :p

As much as I would love to see those mighty Bombers win a record 17th flag, I can't see Geelong not winning the GF.

Not the greatest title for a thread, given the international audience around here, for whom the terms footy and football could mean any one of 6 or 7 different sports!

Evil has been defeated (for now) - the Mighty Bombers have disposed of the miserable Scumbaggers - rejoice!

This is the one time of the year I like Essendon, when they've beaten Carlton. (even better when it causes Carlton to equal their worst ever streak of losses :smug:)

Bit early on for such a bold statement :p

The swannies look good to make the 8 but probably not much else though sadly.

Interested to see how Kieron Jack progresses. His dad was my favourite rugby league player in my youth. So far so good!

Probably is a tad early, although seeing the Cats demolition of Essendon by 99 points doesn't provide any comfort that I'm wrong

Not sure they are even a certainty to do that. Sydney have been playing a defensive game that seeks to close down the opposition, which I think has been superseded by the hard running attacking style that Geelong, and increasingly, other teams are playing.

I haven't heard much about this guy, what position does he play? Presumably, if his old man was a good RL player his genetic make up will stand him in good stead to play AFL.

You mean like we did against Port Adelaide and West Coast? And how we currently have the highest percentage?

The thing a lot of people have always missed is that Sydney has different game plans. The defensive tempo-controlling game is just one option, and happens when Sydney are struggling a bit. And surely being able to control things when you're struggling is never a bad thing--it's why Sydney (and the Crows) typically concede fewer points than most other teams, they know what to do when the goals aren't flowing. It's been that way since 2005 or earlier.

Sydney are never really out of the game because of the way they play. But what's more interesting is Port Adelaide. Grand Finalists last year, they haven't won a game this year. 47 points up in the third quarter last night when it starts pouring down with rain. Brisbane then kick 8 goals straight and eventually win by ~3 goals! What a comeback. Port Adelaide are even below Richmond.

That's was the funniest thing to see today! Great win by Carlton to break their losing streak of 15 games. Perfect to be done against Collingwood.

Stupid stupid move from Barry. Mystifying, even. Won't be surprised if the club's completely lost patience with him now, he had a bad year last year, and now this. Probably a good move to apologise though. It probably won't matter given his broken wrist (it's a forward break), but I think he'll get 4 based on how the tribunal works now and 8-12 for the wrist.

Ah well, we don't really need him that badly. We've a good record playing minus Hall. 4 wins and 4 losses, with the losses coming in 2002 against Brisbane and the Crows, and 2007 against Geelong and West Coast.

Considering that Davis, Everitt and Grundy to come back there's no lack of potential forward structures and I ain't too worried. It'll be good for Roos to be forced to use plans which don't just go "kick it to Hall" -- makes us less predictable. And these youngins are exciting this year.

We'll probably still lose at Kardinia Park though.

I reckon 6 for the hit and 8 for the wrist!

Even though Hall hasn't played well since 2006, he still takes alot of the defensive heat of the other forwards by attracting the best defenders of the opposition. Micky O has been great this year but with the extra defensive pressure on him might be a different story.

Will definately lose against the cats.

Agreed. Hoping players like Goodes and Everett can fill a "big forward" role even though they'd be doing it more as a roving CHF.

As I said, I'm not too worried the forward lineup though, though... we still have one of the best and most multifaceted forward lineups in the competition. It's always been the lack of a classy midfield and lack of big defenders that's been our real problems. For example, Leo Barry is class but should not be forced to play as FB every week.
