If you believe that is what it's for, then you obviously don't know what it is.
I put forward a very straight-forward question. What do the alerts actually mean?

So far, none have answered. I can only assume that none really know!

If I would be Al Qaeda I would attack right
after the first US bombs hit Bagdad. You
know Al Qaeda is really into symbolism and PR.
That way it would seem that they fight back
against US aggression. I think that would give
them even more public support in the muslim world.

Of course the folks who planed a chemical terror
strike against the UK were catched before anything
happend. I think the chance is quite high that
the US authorities will prevent a possible
terrorist attack too. Those "Homeland security"
guys must monitor any even just half-way arab-looking
person in the US by now...

Even though I live in New York, I'm don't fear for my life (who would attack Brooklyn?) but I do fear for other's lives.
Speak for yourself, Brooklyn Boy. We Manhattanites are toast. :)
Seriously, I'm going out on the town tonight, regardless of the warnings. [party]

good thing I don'y live in a major city or on the coast :scan:

Unfortunately it is looking to be much more serious. I'm pretty much out of harms way as I'm so close to the Canadian border .

If it's airborne you're going to have to go alot further than Windsor to be safe.

Hopefully no harm will come to anyone.

I'll make an exception for people tied to Al-Qaidea...

This isnt good...

I do live quite a bit away from San Francisco, so I guess Im somewhat safe...but this is really bad news. I sure hope everything turns out all right.

@ kmad and stormbind: The alert levels correspond to security levels adopted by various levels and departments of government. For example, Nancy the receptionist has a post-it-note stuck to her monitor which reads: "Code orange - ask for photo ID. thanx! Ray"

While I appreciate the efforts, worldwide, to bust up terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, and think certain precautions are worthwhile for safety's sake, I believe people must try to defy terrorists. Terrorists are those who would use fear to manipulate people. Don't let them win.

Although I'm not the biggest fan of Bush and company, these alerts need to be issued and are important (to state the obvious). I look at these like tornado warnings (I live out here in tornado country). 98% of the time a tornado warning is nothing, just a really big thunderstorm, 1.999% of the time a tornado tears up a corn field and nothing else. But if it hits your town you are glad for the warning. If they had information and said nothing, and then there was an "event" people would be calling for their heads.

I was thinking of taking a little ice fishing trip up north a couple weeks from now (when I can get some days off), where some of my cousins live, but now this is just too short of a notice.... The Twin Cities together make up I think one of the top 10 or 15 largest metro areas in the country, at 2.5 million with suburbs. Plus the Mall of America could be among the things that might be considered a "symbolic" target. I never go there anyway, so you won't catch me there this weekend either, but I just hope like hell whatever is planned gets foiled.
