Looks awesome, and highlights?!
The highlight was probably sailing on the catamaran, but otherwise it was a super chill resort vacation. Beach, drinks, relaxing.

it's been a good summer

This is me on the summit of Teapot mountain, near Juifen, about an hour's worth of public transit (or driving) away from central Taipei, Taiwan.

Jiufen (you can see a bit of it behind me) is the town that a lot of people think inspired the movie Spirited Away.. The director has disputed this, but many believe this nevertheless. Some of the stuff in Jiufen does look a lot like some of the buildings and spaces you see in that movie. Either way, I arrived in Jiufen very early, hung around the city & had breakfast, then climbed the mountain you see behind me in this photo, then got dinner @ Jiufen and explored the old city a bit more, then climbed Teapot mountain, where this picture was taken.. then got back down to Jiufen again and explored the old town some more, this time after dark. Just to add a bit of context to this photo. It was a long day! 36 hours later I would be on a plane back to North America

In this photo we are essentially looking north-west along Taiwan's north-eastern coast, toward mainland China (not pictured in this photo, etc.). Taipei is to the South-West and you can actually see ex-world's tallest building Taipei 101 in the distance from the summit if you squint (about 40km away as the crow flies, not pictured in this photo, etc.)

@Valka D'Ur my local SCA group had their big event this weekend (Society for Creative Anachronism, cross between full on medieval reenactment and historical LARPing), and I spent the previous week participating in the classic SCA tradition of frantically trying to finish up new garb before an event!

(Please ignore the modern shoes; I've been lazy about finding shoes that pass the medieval 10 foot test!)
The garb is emulating that of a late Anglo-Saxon tunic with contrasting cuffs and facing color, along with tablet woven decoration to protect the raw edges of the fabric. The hat also has tablet woven trim where I brocaded imitation gold thread to create patterns.

I also did pretty well at the combat event, here I am in blue about to take my opponents hand off with a saber!
I'm also stepping back slightly to void the body from his cut so I stay safe. Though I should have stepped back and to the right rather than straight back. Back and to the right would have turned his hand/forearm from a narrow target into a wide target, easier to hit.

Very nice garb! :yup:

The shoes will come. Do you have access to Ithra classes? Since they teach pretty much everything (would not be surprised if there's a class on how to build a kitchen sink), there might be someone who can teach a class on shoes.

Mind you, if the rubber part was black instead of grey, I don't think anyone would even notice, or at least not enough to warrant a fuss. I always wore either runners or my black winter boots at outdoor events, since it wasn't unusual to get at least rain and I didn't want to risk my beaded and embroidered indoor shoes.

I'd learned my lesson at an outdoor demo in early September when it started to sleet and we gave up on the demo. We'd brought enough food to feed us and anyone who showed up to watch, so we called the one person in the shire who wasn't there that day - she was at home, packing to move. We just phoned her and said, "We got sleeted out of the demo, and we're coming over to your place for supper, we'll bring the food." It turned into a nice going-away party, complete with dancing in the basement.

Thanks!
I'm actually just going to buy a pair of shoes for now. I have enough ongoing projects that leatherworking is pretty far down on the list. I'll get there eventually though.

AFTER OVER 22 YEARS ON THIS WRETCHED SITE, HERE'S A PIC OF ME, ENJOY
