Fox-20 -- The Harsh War

Lurkin'

No tech trading?

You trying to win or something?

Thanks for the WW link, rolo :goodjob:

I always assumed neutral territory was similar to our "culturally dominant" tiles. Basically it looks like intercepting large stacks before they reach our borders isn't a good plan. There go more of our trees :mischief:

You guys are all looking at this the wrong way. We're not the ones with our backs against the wall ... THEY are the ones who have to look out for us ;)

If you want to know what to expect from Boreal maps take a look at PH08 - The People of the Deer. Basically the map holds very few happiness resources and has not this many hills, so production is an issue - which can't be solved through ruthless whipping as happiness is also a big issue. Anyway, have fun - I didn't with this map ;) . Good luck once more !

Imhotep

Glad to see you starting a new AW Fox :) Good luck!

Boreal is a very resource poor map - you'll run across large swaths of ice/tundra that will make lots of useless ground. Many of the tiles are food negative so you'll need to build cities around deer and wheat. I don't think you'll find a single grassland tile with this mapscript (I tried a few games for the HoF).

Dang!

AW on Boreal on Monarch! Wow, mr fox ~ you even out-pholk'ed me! Even I would stay away from this one ;) :)

good that you're back!

@Pigswill: Ofcourse I am trying to win ... the name is fox, not pholk.

@Jabah: Boreal map is typically forest heavy with a good number of hills (but even morepeaks), so production isn't that scarce.

@rolo: Celtic starts with hunting.

@Olodune: WW is less a concern in AW since it is heavily compensated for when you click AW option. But going worker first when we start with a scout in an AW game would give me nerves ... so I am very much inclined to stick to warrior -> worker plan.

Yes, main concern is happiness. I think the only happy resources in Boreal are silver, fur and gems. You won't see incense, gold, ivory, maybe you will see wine. Plus in AW, we would likely not go after religion. So, one less source of happiness. Fortunately, we are unlikely to grow very big in Boreal (there is a serious lack of food in Boreal map apart from the heavy dose of deers which gives only +2F).

That is also the reason why I choose Boudica vs other Iicy leaders (Brennus, Viking, Russia, Cathargians) ... I certainly did not choose her arbitrarily.

Seems like we agree on settling in place, Mining->BW, warrior->worker. Will play in 20 hrs time.

You convinced me. Find a guy with a club. Those 2/2/0 tiles are not horrible to work, even without a camp.

Edit: An Epic speed game gives even more support to warrior first, imho.

Players

- Myself, obviously
- Ozbenno, who asked me to start an AW game with Boreal Map
--

Well, asking to play with Fox + Boreal + epic + AW = masochism in my dictionary

Not at all. You see I asked GF to start the game and include me, thus making sure I was after GF and avoiding the :whipped:. Good luck with that berserks

Now, now, guys, don't portray me as a tyrant devil or something ... but I was thinking abt the same thing when berserks01 specifically asked to be placed last when he knew jolly well I am the first

Anyway, while you guys are laughing at berserks, Boudica actually got her act together and settled Bibracte (for better or worse):

As was typical of playing the first turnset, got all the huts. That's why I love playing the first set

The map revealed another hut further south, which our Icenic scout dutifully pursue ...

And the Celtic cooks learnt how to make Borreal Salmon Sushi. Nice. If only there were actually fishes to be found ...

As expected, we find no fish. But we find Monty.

That's another thing I like abt AW ... you don't get to suffer the part where the crazy fellow raves about sacrificing 1000 Aztec slaves in honor of the pleasure of meeting you.

Deprive of the pleasure of sacrificing slaves to us, he found Buddha to sacrifice to. Love to see how he explain to Buddha about all those sacrificial altar when we sent him to Him :mischief:

More hut popping -- all of them yield gold, increasing our coffer by quite a bit.

Note also the warrior successfully fended off some wolves ... so he has a promotion available.

I stopped at the turn where the worker (can he build a camp in forest without BW?) would be out next. Should discuss what to build next, suggest barracks or warrior.

Ozzy is UP.

I think a camp could be in ADDITION to a forrest (or jungle - I remember have camped ivory in jungle before IW, but that could have been in previous version...)

You even get to keep the forest hammer bonus -- deer forests should only be cut if we *really* need those hammer right now, or for clear terrain killing grounds.

Looks like a great opening and a fun map :goodjob:. I'll take a closer look in 5-6 hours.

Mmmmm Monty, well at least our first great general should appear fairly quickly :p

:mischief: Can I run away yet? Maybe Monty has an opening -- his woods II Jags would certainly be powerful on this map ...

Huh? Oh ... DOH!!!!

Hopefully I can get :whipped: immunity between now and when I play

What a fantastic capital, working all food specials + gems, leaves us with 15 food surplus at size 8 . I would suggest we eventually use most of that for plains cottaging, and some specialists.

Another warrior after the worker finishes gets my vote -- for revealing more tiles close to Bibracte.

This would be my (still naive) choice for a second city:

nact1.jpg

It would be on a hill, have two deer + furs. Monty would likely throw his forces at us here. Remember a Dun makes hill cities even easier to hold through guerrilla promotions ... and the strategic positioning looks great. Plus the tiles close to Monty can be cleared down to bare tundra.

Definately think we should build next city on a hill and getting the fur connected asap would also be good. Its hard to settle on the gems (as commerce sources will be rare) but I think you've got the spot right. I'll try and fogbust the area a bit more to see if the black squares hold anything of intererst.
