Fox08 - The Bad Joke Continues

More gripes for Mr Pholky, or whoever that decide to fortify the workers and set governor automation and have forced specialist. While I understand the need to use these mechanics in normal Civ game, I cannot agree with employing them in an OCC.
Couldn't you tell? This WAS the joke

One thousand apologies. Blame it on my lack of experience at OCC's, and limited amount of playing time right now, but what should i be checking it for? I wanted to grow the city, and have the scientists working in the city? I'm honestly asking: what sorts of things should i be checking on a turn-by-turn basis to maximize the city??

Joke:
Q. Why do seagulls fly over the sea?
A. B/c if they flew over the bay, they'd be bagles ("bay-gulls")

;) :)

Mr Fox, I noticed the joke on the roster... I wasn't DoWed, our legendary builder friend was ;) . But back on business.....

I think that we should go for Physics now. Besides the free GS, It unlocks Airships, the first air unit of the game, that has no counter and it is virtually untouchable until flight. A 4-5 stack of them would help us a lot tackling any aproaching SoD ( I'm betting that Toku will try his luck someday and I not sure that we heard the last of both Romans ( holy and unholy ) ... )

@ pholk

I'm not sure that you did well selling Gunpowder to the HRE ( but it is a understandle procedure ), but the reason you pointed is not valid: only demands enforce peace, not regular tech trades ( even tech vs money )

@Pholk: okay, as an example: when I start the Oxford, it was 4 turns. I decided then to fire some of the scientists and see if I can get it down to 3. Indeed I can, then it is better, since Oxford gives beakers bonus, it is more optimal to fire the scientist when building the oxford and hire them back.

@r_rolo1: opps ... sorry, my mistake.

--

Yeah, head for Physics. Our workers then could build some forts on unused tiles to be filled with an armada of Airships. That would be a better defense than anything because collateral damage or air attacks are pretty powerful before fighters appear...

Ok, I played my set. Things are not looking good as it was very premature to take peace with Charlie... I think we're going to pay the price for that in another turn set or two. Sorry for my brief summary but I forgot to write turn-by-turn details this time. I'm just putting this back together from my screenshots.

As per the consensus, I finished researching SM. I then set research for physics. In the meantime, I noticed that we had some nice trades available. I traded astronomy to JC for nationalism. I then traded astronomy + 290 gold to Gilgamesh for chemistry. Unfortunately that brings us to WFYABTA with JC.

After finishing the temple, I set the build to wealth/research, depending on how much money we had in reserve. Halfway through the set, Gilgamesh declared on Izzy, and bribed Toku into war as well. I took the chance to sell PP to Izzy for 510 gold (she's teching horribly on her own). JC invoked the AP to stop the war however, and so Gilgamesh is back to peace with Izzy (Toku is still at war however).

Izzy came begging for chemistry at one point which I gave as well. We can't afford to let her fall too far behind JC and Gilgamesh. We also got one bad random event during the set:

After completing physics, I set research to rifling. I didn't build any airships as... Charlie's stack is too big for airships to matter. We need rifles ASAP:

I've tentatively set research to biology. I'm pretty certain it's not the best tech to get at this point though. I think steampower may be better.

The current tech situation (note JC is out of WFYABTA again - we can probably afford one tech trade before he goes back):

And my bad joke:
Spoiler :

A young journalism student at the University of Tennessee was assigned to write a human interest story, so he went up into the mountains were he found an old farmer sitting on his porch. He introduced himself, explained his mission, and asked, "Has anything ever happened here that made you really happy?"

The farmer thought for a moment, then said, "Yeah, one time my neighbor's daughter, a fine looking gal, got lost. We formed a posse and went to look for her, and when we found her, we all took turns to screw her."

"I can't print that!" the young man exclaimed. "Can't you think of anything else that happened, which made you happy?"

The farmer thought for a while longer, then smiled. "Yep! One time a neighbor's sheep got lost. We formed a posse to look for it, and when we found it, we all took turns to screw it."

Again, the young man said "I can't print that, either! Let's try another approach. Has anything ever happened around here that made you really sad?"

The old farmer dropped his head in shame. After a couple of seconds he looked up timidly at the young man and said, "This one time, I got lost..."

Pretty good turns. If cav is showing up, rifling's priority just shot up. It was a good call to go rifling first.

We are also stacking up a nice stash of gold, so let's upgrade one or two rifles, lest someone come demanding our gold.

We have another dye that can be connected ... maybe we can find someone to trade us some cows or pigs.

Imhotep is UP

Edit: Feedback is of-course free to post a Got It as well, if you can beat Timmy to it.

the workers have been busy with more useful things like lumbering and fixing AI sabotage attempts. I think the next player should have time to farm over the cottage though. Also, cannon will probably not help us as they will die from flank attacks. So please don' start stock piling cannons...

We should try not to let research go below 100% at this point. If we're short on gold, just build wealth for a turn as it will give about 40-50 gold.

I don't know, while the no-unhealthiness and 4 free specialist (we have 4 forests in BFC) seems very attractive, it hurts hammer production a lot. Firstly, it precludes lumbermills (each forest has one less hammer). Next, it removes coal (assuming we have coal, it means no rails = -1 hammer per mine or forest). Lastly, since we only have one last Nat Wonder available, it means no 100% production bonus from Ironworks.

On the other hand, we are now at healthy cap. There are various sources of unhealthiness waiting to creep in (Ironworks +3, factory +2, Industrial Park +2, laboratories +2). One possible way to combat these is to adopt environmentalism (+6), and ofcourse hospital and supermarket (but we only have sheep).

Speaking of environmentalism, all the Civs are in Mercantlism. If they remain so, we may really want to consider environmentalism. We can probably go mercantilism ourselves ... don't know if it is worth the 1 turn anarchy though.

We have a problem without oil. It maybe prudent to save a great scientist, research corporation and found that Ethanol Corp. Alternative is to go raze that Spanish city. It will probably let us claim the oil. The remaining option is go anti-tank heavy (gunships, anti-tank unit).

Oh, BTW, I checked. Nobody has extra animals (pigs/Cows/Deer) available for trade, so probably it is more prudent for the workers to convert that village to farm instead of connecting the dye.

Da bad joke:

Spoiler :
The client says to the lawyer: "I'll give you $ 5000 extra if you manage it that I'm sentenced two 2 months only. Please, do all you can ! At the end of the trial the man is acvtually sentenced to 2 months in jail. The lawyer sighs relieved and says to his client: "Now that was hard work. Imagine, the judge wanted to drop all charges..."

Not much to report really. Gilgamesh wanted us to stop trading with Izzy, I declined. I farmed the Town over and connected the dyes almost. Biology came in. I set research to Steam power heading for the Assembly Line -> Industrialism route. We will get another GP in 2 turns. I built and upgraded some Rifles. Munich did grow and is now unhealthy, I hired a Merchant for the gold.

Btw, the GreyFox was intuitively right. As JC is not in Representation but in US we don't get the civics bonus modifier. He would convert for the price of Biology. Speaking of techs, there may be some trades with Rifling out there. Be careful though not to trade with Gilgamesh as he's hated by all but Tokugawa.

Pretty quiet, eh? With JC preempting all the wars (including those he started himself :crazyeye:), we have to contend to competing with the Immortals in terms of pure research power until Mass Media nullifying the Apostolic Palace.

I am still worried abt the lack of oil ... but it seems none of you care. Well, then, I guess it will be anti-tanks + gunships then.

standard ethanol doesn't come out until plastics, right? I don't think there's much we can do about it for the time being...

Razing the Spanish city is tempting but it picks up a -1 modifier from JC which may be problematic. Perhaps we can culture flip the stupid city?

Have there been any changes in Charlie's stack?

Thoughts

We have 3 big military concerns: Toku , Gilga and JC .... If this were a solo game, I would bet than JC is preparing to dogpile Toku ( the civ that he dislikes more ), but we are a tasty target as well. JC has rifles as we and acess to airships, so we would have a rough time defending ourselfs....
Toku is a diferent matter... he's not loved by anyone ( how unusual ) and he's backward.... we can fend his stacks with some ease ( I hope...)
Gilga is in between: he dislikes Izzy a lot, but he doesn't love us as well. He doesn't have rifles as well....
In resume, or we are in the verge of a Toku dogpile or of a human dogpile.... in first case, we should join the party. In the second... "we are so screwed" , like someone said previously :p

My advice to next player is to shut down research for some turns, build some units and upgrade the rest. War is coming, my friends....

Roster

GreyFox - On deck, hopefully for a peaceful round
Shyuhe
Feedback - permaskip until further notice
Imhotep
r_rolo1 - Just played before the storm
pholkhero - UP for the great shake

Good luck ( we're going to need it..... ) !

We should have helped Izzy. We have already committed ourselves to siding with Izzy and JC. Try to keep in line with that strategy. The "give us help" and "Mutual struggle" bonus is needed, if we ever want to go back to free religion for 10% bonus.

I agree ( that is why I said you could whip me at leisure..... ) , but like I said, we would recieve the full blow of Toku's SoD ( that was how it looked ATM... Spain moved a strong contingent towards Toku next turn ). But now that doesn't matter... WW I is about to start and we'll have to take sides anyway.
I'm betting that JC will dogpile toku and that Gilga will try to take a bit of Izzy, but both can turn to us :please: .... as usual, pholk can keep the best part of the game to him
