Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

not so much a question as some feedback, but the site is loading really slowly, taking up to 10 full seconds to go to new pages and post comments. every other website im going to is operating just fine though. i'm just pointing it out if this is happening a lot or not. didnt seem like a bugs forum topic so i posted in here. move it if this isnt the right forum to post this in.

HR

edit: as i was posting this it took me well more than 30 secs to type this up (i edit and correct too much) and it gave me a 'must wait 30 secs to post' flood prevention note. seemed strange.

edit2: even weirder, it double posted and i have no idea why.

I was offline when the slowdown took place. Response time is normal now. I examined our logs, but didn't see any unusual events. Perhaps our host's server had a problem.

Thunderfall rebooted the server. He thinks this fixed the slowness. Thanks to all for your patience.

I just had to reload this thread to even view it after several minutes doing something in another tab - this has become very common of late, the browser frequently notifying me of a long-running script.

Can you identify the script that's causing the problem? I don't see anything unusual, just various Google stuff and Facebook.

If it happens again, can you copy and paste or screengrab the error message?

The ads were cooperative about picking a fight with my adblock first thing when I came by this morning, so here you go:

Try this:

1. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced.

2. Check the boxes for "Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)" and "Disable script debugging (Other)".

3. Uncheck the box for "Display a notification about every script error".

4. Click Apply, close and then reopen IE.

[ninja'd - thanks, I'll try that and let you know.]

Okay, and the forum was gracious enough to require a refresh when I tried to go up a level after posting last and see if there were any other new posts in Site, whereupon, note the hovertext in the top of the attachment from cursor over the loading status X in the address bar. -It's not always attributed to long-running scripts -"CivFanatics is not responding" being more frequent- but the scripts are in a strong second place, and it is the exception, not the rule, for pages to load quickly on the first try for several months now.

It took me a good five minutes to get in here and make this post after saving the screen, not counting how long it will take to go up...

Attached, the advanced browser settings as I found them already when I opened them:

(I've been doing system maintenance lately, to little avail, and some of this is definitely on me and a machine crowding the useful end of its lifespan while I try to put off having a new OS forced on me as long as possible - but I only get this horrible level of performance problems on sites running video ads, other than here. Just here.)

I don't have any other suggestions. You might want to use your favorite search engine to look for is not responding due to a long running script. Plenty of hits.

ETA: You might want to disable your ad blocking software on CivFanatics to check if that's causing the problem.

I love how some forums will infract you for even mentioning adblock and CFC mods actually help people resolve AB issues.

I have no problem using No Script (on Firefox) for security, other than the long process of building the white list.

I was just going to suggest switching to Firefox and, if the problem persists, use AdBlock.

I uninstalled AdBlock -because if the controls/setting to do what Petek suggested are so hard to find and it fails to block ads more often than succeeds, I don't want it- before I came over this morning, but still had the usual problems. I closed the tab, and opened a new one to come back - better, but not good and AdBlock seems to still be running. I can't do a restart right now because reasons, but I'll report back later when I have...
