Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Unless the moderator's evil twin logs in. Beware!

Why are threads in groups randomly marked as read when I haven't even had a chance to look at them? It's rather annoying for a guy who only reads bolded threads, and I'm reasonably sure most people do that as well. It's kind of the point of bolded threads.

And for some reason, this stopped happening. Funny how it does that only when I get sufficiently annoyed.

It sounds like you are asking if it ok to remove all pretense of discussion and start "forum games" type threads.

I think I'm asking whether such threads are proliferating because they're okay now or just because nobody's noticed.

…or nobody cares enough?

No she just meant that now there is a preponderance of threads with empty OP's. They just post a video and hope we will discuss it.

Apparently this used to be against the rules but now it seems ok. She's asking for clarification on the matter.

For the record:
I'm iffy on these threads. I don't ever watch the videos that are posted for various reasons, but sometimes good discussion do come of them. It's akin to posting an article as the main point of an OP.

Sometimes, nothing comes of them though as the OP is just so void and/or the video isn't worth discussing. But that can and does happen in any given thread without video OP's. So I don't...it's kind of a wash IMO.

Well, at least article-post usually at least contain some highlighted text or something. And you can read (parts of ) an article much faster than watching some 5min YouTube video. And I don't really want to turn my music off to listen to some random youtube thing, which will probably be poor anyway.

Decent 'video' OP's have some accompanying text/highlights as well. The problem is the preponderance of threads that have nothing but video.

But again many article threads are just articles, and OP's of all kinds can be real crap. So it's a wash IMO.

These are two of the reasons why I don't watch the video OP's either and decent enough reasons to ban video OP's.

But the question still remains: are video Op's now ok, when apparently they weren't in the past?

I would agree that more content in an OP improves a thread. I do not know how the other mods feel on this. How about reporting such threads and tell us you think it needs more content. That will bring the issue to the attention of more staff and we can rule on each case as it comes along. I would lean towards asking for more OP content or locking the thread.

My view is that this is still a discussion forum, and that a thread needs to present a topic for discussion. A video or news article falls short of that. The poster needs to make an observation of their own (something mildly substantial) and direct the sort of analysis that they are after. Otherwise, it is basically spam.

I'm actually inclined to agree. Most articles and videos by themselves don't deserve their own thread.

I agree. If a thread starts with just a pic or video I'll just ignore it.

If there is a link, there needs to be some quotes from the link also. There has recently been a thread started asking if the President should be impeached and only a link. No quotes from the link. Very frustrating.

Yeah, those 'click here/play this video; discuss!' threads are very annoying.
