Frequently Asked Questions

Correct. "Cold Ruin" is what remains of the Palace of Mulcarn from which he ruled in the Age of Ice.
It doesn't actually do anything in unmodded FfH. In my version it has a defensve bonus and provides Ice mana.

I think the latter is a very good idea! So let's change it.

But ice mana hasn't been implemented yet. :(
You are of course quite right. But everything is already prepared for it (protection against fire, lightning, ice, poison, death etc.), additional damage of some weapons etc. So it would be the time for it.

If Shadowwalk is being calculated correctly should I see Tile Defense in the combat factors?

Secondly I had Gibbon Goetia summon a Flesh Golem and it came up as an illusion, wondering if this is bug or just something unavoidable. I can upgrade it to a normal golem once I get two XP.

The first page of the main thread states FFH II requires 3.17. Many mods will only work with 3.13. Whats the recommended way to deal with this problem - have two seperate BTS installations?

AI autoplay. I seen a couple of hints about how to engage this but I can't figure it out. I've seen <Shift-Ctrl-X> but this doesn't do it. And I see in the Modders Guide forum that you can go to the Python Console to change a line, but have no idea what going to the Python Console means so that hasn't helped me.

After more research I've found some answers and narrowed down my questions...

1)'CheatCode=0' in the ini file (CivIV Config shortcut in Vista) changed 0 to chipolte to enable something (various cheats, AI Autoplay included I suppose).
2) Check "Allow Debug Tools" under Game Details in the FfH2 in-Game Menu.
3) Type Shift+~ to open the in game Python console. (According to jdog5000 This is a very useful tool for forcing things to happen in game to test them.
3) type CyGame().setAIAutoPlay(nnn), where nnn equals the number of turns to playout.

Thanks to Xienwolf for the clarification of Shift + ~ for the python console. (curriously it opens the console but won't accept the commands without it). :salute:

Make sure that your console shows

>>

and not

>

If you press ~ you get the first (proper) one, if you press ` you get the later (failure to hold SHIFT).

You can execute any command possible from python within the console, as long as you make the right imports and definitions.

I have two questions: 1. Can you play as Hyborem? 2. I have two earth mana nodes w/ routes, but I can't do level two upgrades or spells. How do I get level two spells.

1) Researching infernal pact lets you choose to play as hyborem

2) Adepts can only learn level one spells, mages can learn level two and one spells and archmages can learn every spell level. BTW you only need one source of the mana to upgrade to any level of spell.

Question. If you try and modify the xml files for FFH2, how do you get them to actually manifest the changes in game? I've tried modifying them but they don't seem to change when I go in-game.

All you have to do if you are modifying the xml directly is save the file and start a new game. (You might be able to continue an old game, depending on what was changed, but you must start the program after saving the xml changes)

If you are using the excel editor, you have to click "Export" for the xml files themselves to change. You also need to have Macro's allowed. After that, you still need to restart the game for it to register.

Also make sure you are going to the right location. It is usually recommended that for your personal modmod you should modify a copy instead of the original file. If you do this, you should remember to change the target of the shortcut. Otherwise you may still be opening and trying to play the unmodded version.

If you are using Vista, you have to enable the Security Controls to allow General Users to edit the file. Otherwise it saves as a seperate copy that the game will not use.

Right click on the file, choose properties, go to the Security Tab, Edit Access Privileges, and check all the boxes for general user.

No they don't - your magic-wielding Arcane units will get free spell spheres, but your spells don't become stronger with more sources. Some of your units will, if they have affinity for the mana in question, though.

I don't seem to be able to trade resources anymore (or demand them for ending wars, etc). The information screen that displays what resources AIs are willing to trade shows items, but the trade window doesn't. What are the prerequisites/game options that need to be in place to allow resource trading?

Do you have trade yet?

@ Elm: For resources you need to be connected via trade network to the partner you want to trade with (roads with exploration, coast + rivers with sailing, oceans with astronomy.).
Sounds a reasonable Limitation imo.

@ Darksaber 1: Trade is "only" needed to trade techs. Cartography is "only" needed to trade maps. Resource-Trading has no prerequisite on its own...
