Frequently Asked Questions

Baron Duin: After reaching XP 145 no further useful promotions can be done, only two are available. After XP 170 none is there.
Why?
When giving him the hero promotion (just as a try), he can have very many promotions such as all the others.

What is the idea behind?

Bambur: He cannot get the Blitz-promotion. Why not?
When giving him move 2 instead of move 1, than he can get Blitz.
Till now I do not understand the principles behind this details.

Conc. mana nodes:
The dwarves as "my" neighbors had a fire mana with an impressive hut like a wooden pyramid. Suddenly three fire elementals (very beautiful thanks to our artist Ze) came out of it and conquered the city. Instantly I killed them and got this city. When having the mana node inside the city border, I was not able to establish another mana node, only fire was possible.
In the past I had realized that when a mana node was destroyed by getting out of the border in case of a conquer, any type of mana node could be established on it.
Can anybody explain this?

about the baron: the baron is a unit_type beast (or something like that) which means he can only get the promotions allowed for beast-type units.
Blitz only makes sense if you've got more than one movement point, so it's only accessible if you've got more than one movement.
That pyramid is the "pyre of the seraphic" unique improvement, which grants 1 fire mana. You can get an event asking you to raze the pyre (like you could with any other improvement). Once you do this, you recieve a golden age, but also incur the rage of the fire diety, which sends 3 fire elementals out as revenge.
When mana is alligned by a certain node or unique feature, the only way to create another type of mana there is to "cleanse" the mana by using the level 2 metamagic spell.

Thank you very much, everything is now quite clear.:goodjob:

There used to be a check in the SDK that prevented units with base movement less than 2 from getting a promotion granting blitz. This was however fixed a couple patches ago. (I'm not sure if it was just removed or made to check all of a units promotions instead of just oing by the base movement.)

also if you "sacrifice" an angle unit on the "pyre of the seraphic" you will recieve one powerful fire elemental under your control. (<--accidentally find that out in my last game)

Theocracy usually forbids the propagation of other religions than the state religion. Why could the CoEsus be propagated when RoK was the state religion?

Because CoE is not spread through the normal Civ IV mechanism of sacrificing a unit to spread the religion, but rather through a spell. Likewise, Priests can always spread their religion in rival theocracies by using their Found Temple spell.

Is there a way to add landmark tags on terrain without having to use worldbuilder?
I'm interested because i don' want to use worldbuilder spoiling map, enemy units and so on.....

You mean just in a regular singleplayer game? You can use sign mode - Alt-S toggles it, or if you zoom out to globe view there's a button above the minimap. I use it all the time for dotmapping, reminding myself where enemy wonders are built so I don't raze them, marking areas with siders in them early game, etc - like inscribing items in a roguelike :)

How do you add your own custom scenarios to the list of scenarios viewable in game? (BTW, I hate how you team members tease us with those!)

do the metamagic promotions affect summoned units like fireballs, or only direct damage spells?

Please add a question like:

"What version of Civ IV:Beyond the Sword do I need?" with a link to the most recent patch.

Thanks.

Emmm ... hypotetical question (I dont tested this, that idea just strikes me :):
What happen if I as Luchirup dominate Balseraphs Puppeter and have Barnaxus with Combat 5 and with that Puppeter I create Puppet (which have Golem promotion) ..? Do the Puppet has empower 5 (even if it cant have it according to civilopedia ??

And can "start settler promotion" include flat movment cost ??
