This is a large Tectonics Randomized Actual Earth map. Not enough water, lots of land, only 8 players. On turn 19 Amelanchier is killed, so I look in WorldBuilder. Theres a Gargoyle in Evermore and two wounded ones beside it. Pristin Pass is 6 squares straight north of Braduk and 14 straight south of the Elves. Late Elves. I think Cool! I can get Leaves for once!
On turn 46, I see a Gargoyle coming off that weird little jungle land bridge in the first screencap. Two warriors and one re-roll, but I kill it and bless the stupid AI for sending it in half-dead and unpromoted.
On turn 73, same thing, only I get it with a Hunter. As near as I can work out from the distances, the AI sent the first Gargoyle after me as soon as it took out the Elves and the second when the first died. It mustve kept it unhealed the way it does animals - mismanagement by wandering around. With Gargoyles that might make sense - and it was certainly helpful.
[Aside: if I were a Tiger thatd just killed a Scout, Id find the best nearby defensible spot, lair up and turn dead Scout into baby Tigers. AI writers?]
Why did they come after me? -Look at the inset. Amelanchier is pining for the fjords, Tasunke is blocked off and Jonas and Charadon have Barbarian. Im it. I could have predicted something from that, but I didnt.
Turn 99. The last Gargoyle? No, its happily running Evermore. No, this is the turn it starts dripping Barby Goblins and Warriors. Do I see anything I should be planning ahead for? -Moi??
Turn 109. The drip has turned into a trickle at two points on my border. Does the penny drop? -It does not.
Turn 119 and the screens you see. The trickle has turned into a stream and I look in WB and finally grasp it: Its raining Barbies all over the Old World and in all that vast expanse, every single drop knows that downhill... is towards me.
This is the Deluge, except...
I am playing the Sidar with a Charismatic leader, which means that I can hit level 6 and make Shades with 20xp instead of 26. Plus Im running Apprenticeship and Conquests and have built Form of the Titan, so my Hunters start with 6xp. Two Barbies = >14xp = yet another Great Engineer. Problem? -I cant make enough Hunters to keep up. Ive even pulled my garrisons to make Shades. Real problem? -Greed! I should be running up the xp on some defenders, but thatll lose out on a few GEs now and I don wanna. Manna from heaven and Im fixing to choke myself on it.
Well. What I ended up doing, of course, was making just enough high-xp Hunters to keep up and then sending them out to knock down my neighbors once Id built Forges and caught up on units. But did you ever see such a situation? -Either Im Cthulhu or Im dead.
