This type of request is not uncommon.

The reason this happens is because everything is considered a number to the AI. And a partially researched tech is only considered a smaller fraction of the whole tech in value. In the AIs mind, a tech which they have 80% researched is only worth 20% of the total value to them. Therefore this is a legitimate trade.

The next reason is because the AI is programmed to request trades with the played only every so many turns. This is to prevent the AI from bugging you every turn. This is also why, with many active AIs, you get tons of requests all at the same time.

In the screenshot Lemon Merchant posted, it just so happened that the "lets make a deal" showed up when Isabella was nearly done with Currency, so its value was extremely low for Isabella. In fact, you can see that she is 2 turns away from finishing it!

To use this information to your advantage, the AI "knows" how far away you are from finishing a tech, and adjusts their trades accordingly. If the AI won't give up a high beaker technology for a reasonable price, try putting a few turns of research into it. You might not be able to save 25 turns of research, but perhaps you can save 21 turns.
Thanks. I knew about the AI giving a tech if you'd researched part of it, but I didn't know the math. :)

Crusades in Civ4?

It's a little known random event. You throw all of your resources at the Holy Land, while someone takes over your game as leader and is cruel to your populace.

It's followed by the Robin Hood event. ;)

The above is RFCE, which has been messed with to make the pope playable :p

After careful consideration, we could come up with two explanations for the placement of Tokyo.

1) Tokugawa supposes, incorrectly, that we are amongst those Civ players who are congenitally incapable of razing a city. This is part of a devilish plan to cripple us with maintenance costs as a series of useless cities flip to us.

2) Tokugawa is demented.

(Yes, I know there's a lot of unimproved tiles around St Petersburg.)

^^It's definitely option 2 :) Why would he regularily be first to Alpha without wanting to trade with anyone or spy spamming the nearest civ? :D
The AI's inability to settle useful sites constantly amazes me :)

Ok LM, wanna explain that one? I've never had that happen in all the years i've been playing BTS.

I can do that :
First you need Christianity (important)
If you then rename one of your GG to Richard Lionheart, then join him with knights.
Then you make a HUUUUGE SOD of knights/trebs/pikemen (I think its around 40+ units) and ship them to the civ that founded Islam.
After u pillage 90 tiles you have succeded the quest. If you manage to keep Jerusalem there is an extra bonus, though if it is Saladin that founded Islam, this is almost impossible....

^^What's the quest reward? :D

The good citizens of Cyrodiil would be baffled by his approach:

'I saw a couple of mudcrabs by the water the other day. I steered clear of them...'

'Disgusting creatures. I hope to never see another.'

However the people of Skyrim would argue with him what with Steamed Mudcrab Legs being a delicacy there.

Although there's a very special mudcrab living in Morrowind :)
