FFS. When they say nothing, we get a bunch of posts demanding at least some communication because "we're working on stuff, no announcements at this time" is better than silence. Then, when they say they're working on stuff, we get complaints about having to wait.
Firaxis can't win.
It is not about Firaxis winning or the civ fans winning. Please don't defend them. It is simply about common sense, respect and open communication. They could have posted this weeks/months ago, with a few "hang in there" posts after and save themselves the negative feelings generated in their most ardent fans or as Dennis Shirk said many times, the best fans in gaming. Their attitude has certainly left a rather unpalatable aftertaste in many of us here. In my book you don't treat your fans, nor even your clients that way. Simple as that. They don' t have to spill all their secrets, have hours-long conversations or answer every question, but just acknowledge the fanbase. Simple courtesy: "Hey, we are alive; we are working on something, hey, we have plans for the future; hey, we know you guys exist, but we can't tell you anything yet, but we're cooking something; hey, sorry for not keeping in touch, but we hear you, etc.
Now, since my discovery of EU4, I am absolutely loving their communication style more and more of weekly Dev Diaries, and dream of having Firaxis come on board with such an open, yet suspenseful enough style, but a simple acknowledgement as I mentioned before is just right especially in the times we live in. Humankind is another great example of that albeit with their own different style. It works!
But I applaud whoever it was on Twitter that nudged them into saying something and I applaud whoever at Firaxis finally posted something. Maybe the current world situation is also affecting positively people's sense of community and openness. It is exciting to see that they have "several projects bubbling away", and hopefully that includes Civ VI and/or the future of the franchise.
