Game Hangs @ NUKE Hit...

I Have successfully dropped an atomic bomb on an AI city without it hanging, I got the full explosive animation. The problem has only occured when the AI dropped an atomic bomb on me, and I only have a single example of this. I have tried updating my graphic drivers but this has not fixed the problem.

I can't do either. My save is set right before war is declared so I can decalre and go to next turn (and the AI nukes me) or I can nuke him (before I click next turn). Either way I hang.

A bit more information and something a bit strange.

My crash occured at turn 363 (1944)in a Large/Pangea/Emperor/Standard (high graphics, 2560x1440) game while there are still 5 other civilizations in existence.

I have consistently been able to recreate the crash when I try to use either an atomic bomb or a nuclear missile. The results are slightly different. With an atomic bomb, there is no display of the explosion before the system freezes - With the nuclear missile, I get the graphical explosion and radiation effects before the freeze. In both cases the screen freezes and the music continues for a minute or so.

Now the strange part. I continued the game without using atomic bombs or nuclear weapons until there was just one civilization other than myself. For a lark, at turn 389 (1969) I tried using an atomic bomb and everything worked properly. Just to be sure, I then used a nuclear missile, and it also worked fine.

Both of the tests above were performed within a few minutes of each other to make sure that they were both done with the same patch level and same system configuration.

Patch level 1.0.1.221, no mods

iMac 27", i7 quad, 16GB, Radeon ATI 5750, Bootcamp Windows 7 x64

Kami, can you upload the 1944 save? I'll give it a try, maybe the 3rd time is a charm. :)
I just remembered my laptop has a Radeon, I'll try all 3 saves on that as well.

My game also freezes when I try to drop a nuclear missile on an enemy. I have tried restarting the game from an Autosave several times and relaunching the nuke to no avail.

I have the most current drivers for my ATI graphics card.

What is really strange though is that I have already used approximately four nuclear missiles within my current game yesterday and had no problems. So for me, this problem occurs when I try to drop a fourth or a fifth nuclear missile within the same game.

I have attached my save (Kizzimandius - Nuke Crash.Civ5Save) from just before I launched the nuclear missile that resulted in the crash.

The missile stationed in Braunschweig/Brunswik was launched at Leeds.

I think Raccoon Diamond may be onto something. In my game the crash occurs when I use the 4'th or 5'th nuclear missile I have built (I have built 4 or 5 others but have not used them). When I go back into the save of the game that crashes and use one of the first nuclear missiles I built (stationed on a missile cruiser off the NW coast), it works fine, although admittedly on a different city....

Sounds like it might be an array dimensioning issue within the program. Can anyone confirm that their crash happens when they try to use the first/only nuclear missile built?

I have reloaded the same game that I had the problem with yesterday and have decided to try and directly hit a city with a nuclear missile instead of a specific unit ie a tank in my case and the game did not crash this time around. I have reloaded the game again to ensure that it wasn't just a fluke and it worked again.

Then, reloading again I've hit the tank (surrounded by more tanks and mechanized infantry) and the game crashed. I've reloaded the game for a fourth time and hit the tank and the game crashed as well. So perhaps hitting a specific unit with a nuclear missile instead of a city might be part of the problem.

Are there maybe any units of non combatant civs (or simpler: of civs which are you at peace with) in the surrounding, which could be affected by the nuke?
I'm just guessing, that such an "instant war declaration" which would then occur could maybe lead to some problems for the code.

Tried a few more scenarios with the game that crashes on the nuclear missile launch:

In answer to "J"s query above - there are no non-English units of any sort near the target city (Leeds). I declared war on Elizabeth before launching the nuclear missile, and the game crashed when I did nuke the city. Leeds has a mechanized artillery stationed in it and several other english units stationed around it.

I then used a different nuclear missile (stationed on a missile cruiser) to attack Leeds - with the same result - game crashed.

I tried attacking an empty tile next to LEEDs with the nuclear missiles - same result - game crash

Attacked several other cities with the first nuclear missile that had caused the game crash. All of these attacks worked fine without caussing any game problems. The cities that were attacked without problems were:

Warwick - no military units stationed in city

Circei - Rocket artillery stationed in city

Richmond - Tank stationed in city

I repeated these tests with the missiles based on the missile cruiser with the same results.

So the problem appears to be target related, but not sure what the issue is. Only suspicion might be that the number of units affected in the blast area (5) was too many for the program to handle correctly (although I'm pretty certain I've used nuclear missiles in previous games that affected at least as many units).

Interesting debate. For my part, the AI was nuking me so I don't have much control over that. FWIW, the city he nuked had all sorts of units around it. And for The J, only my land and his were in question.

And, playing near the end of another game, I thought I'd see if there was any change and pretty much the same thing. I declared war and launched a nuke, it made the explosion and orange glow but I couldn't click on anything, nothing was moving on the screen and then the music died (pun intended). Game locked.

I cannot get this to reproduce in the current build. Tomorrow morning I'll roll the build back to the release build and see if there's a difference.

In case this info was lost in the "shuffle", I have been able to successfully nuke in at leasst one other version (and possibly two). But, that might not mean much considering I reloaded my system and I haven't updated my ATI driver card since the reloading. As I may have explained earlier, when my ATI driver was updated with the latest S/W, I couldn't see the intro video (but could nuke successfully). Now, it's the reverse.

Hi,

I am playing Civ 5 with a good system (Geforce 570, I7-2600k), the performance is great, with one exception: everytime a nuclear explosion occurs (for example bomb. etc.) the frames drop significantly until the explosion is over. Is this normal?

greetings,

 hmm...another ATI card.

sorry, I didn´t understand precisely. Another Ati card? But I am not playing with an ATI, but a nvidia Geforce 570 GTX. The frames drop to about 20 to 25 fps while the explosion occurs, then they go up again to 80 - 100.
