[RD] Games as a Service

I absolutely despises the idea of "game as service". There is a reason why I only ever pay something if it's one GOG.

I don't mind services that are subscription.

For example EA access is $25 a year.

Delayed access to all EA games. I never buy any extras except it for butm dlc. It had mass effect 1,2,3 on it.

If EA basically wants to give away their games for free.

On Xbox you can get gamepass which is also a lot of gaming for cheap.

PS4 doesn't have either.

I do.
I want to buy a game and then being able to use it whenever and however I want, and not being forced to pay each month to access what I want.
Only exceptions are the games where the access is part of the game (like MMO).

It was on sale. I think it is normally...seven dollars? Anyway, Journey of a Roach. It's a point and click adventure/puzzle game, detailing the journey of a couple mutant cockroaches from the depths of a fallout shelter in search of a fabled flower blooming on the surface. It's lighthearted, funny, and entertaining...and also features a video mechanic in which the main character always appears upright so when you walk him up a wall or even further onto the ceiling, the presentation of the game world rotates smoothly around him.

I think I saw that being advertised. I'll go back for a second look. Thanks.

I have the rule of never pay any fee for any game, the exception may be the new Microsoft Flight Simulator which will supposedly release in 2020 and will possibly have a fee for being able to stream the Bing based 3d scenery generated thought a mix of gravimetry and computer image recognition (using something called Azure AI) which according to the previews is almost indistinguishable from reality.

I liked Origin's thing where you can pay $5 a month and you get access to all sorts of games and such. I thought it was really nice to be able to try games I'm not sure about (probably like 9 out of 10 games I buy ends up being a regret), and also you get all the expansions and such for certain games (like the Sims 3, Sim City, etc)

*puts on pirate hat*

Arrgh, me hearties, there be booty over the horizon!
Shame on you! :spank:

What does DRM stand for?

You know me though, I abhor any kind of rule breaking.

Digital Rights Management. DRM varies from a game simply requiring you to put a CD in your computer to play it, to entering a CD key to install the game, to the now-common constant online checks and other crap of that nature. I actually don't mind the DRM of Steam, I'm pretty sure I can play every game in my Steam library without an internet connection. Music I really prefer DRM-free though, so I do try to get it directly from the artist DRM-free whenever possible.

I know about your attitude toward rule-breaking, I hope you understand that it's very strange to me. I really hope you wouldn't turn in undocumented immigrants to ICE or anything like that.

Moderator Action: Please do not discuss piracy of video games etc on CFC for any reason. Thank you.

Games as a service is fine, it's just like netflix and amazon prime. Do you want to buy every blu ray of movies you wish to watch of just pay $10 a month to stream them whenever? Each has pros and cons I guess.

The real issue here is micro-transactions, dlc, price points etc. Companies have figured out their new revenue stream is that and in an of itself, it's not completely horrible, what is completely horrible and ruins it is they design games around it. They killed dead space by adding micro transactions AND they killed potential sequels because the devs wanted the game to be single player but EA wanted it to be multiplayer and support micro transactions. Pretty crappy.

I kind of already get games as a service, like how prime gives me a couple freebies every month.

Absolutely not, I feel hurt you'd even suggest such a thing.

Myself however, I wouldn't work "under the table", or overstay my visa, or just do something I'm not supposed to be doing.

I can understand how you find my views strange, I feel the same way lol. I just can't fathom breaking the law, not necessarily because I'm afraid of legal reprisal (not to say the idea of going to prison doesn't absolutely terrify me), but because I generally agree with the reasons for it and it just feels wrong to me, if I'm making sense?

So I thought Google Stadia would require a subscription and this would allow you to play any game. Turns out, that's not how it works. It's actually a lot more like a traditional games platform in that you buy the games full price and don't pay a subscription to play in 720p. To unlock full 1080p, you have to pay a subscription, which also comes with some other freebies and stuff.

But do you still stream the 720 games? If so, you're SOL if your internet goes down, you're SOL if their server goes down, and you're really SOL when the servers eventually shut down.

Well, I didn't think you did, I brought up the example because I figured it would be an exception of sorts to your view of the law. The law, after all, requires us to cooperate with law enforcement.

My view of the law is informed by my Marxist politics: the law in bourgeois states exists primarily for the purpose of protecting the power and social position of the capitalist class. Its other uses and benefits are largely incidental. More broadly my view can be summed up by the Philosophy tech quote in Civilization 4:
"I have gained this by philosophy: that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law."
-Aristotle
And another quote, not in Civilization:
"The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."
-Anatole France

Interestingly, stuff like fines actually punishes the poor more than rich. If a poor person and a rich person break the same law, and are both fined $200, for the poor person that's a lot of money. For a rich person not very much. Some places try to fix this by basing the fines off of income though I'm not sure if that really helps much because the rich people still has a lot more disposable income.

This might belong better in another thread though.

For what it matters, the only way to play some older games on newer versions of Windows is to actually break the DRM. Windows removed compatibility with SuckyROM because it caused a giant security hole.

I won't go into more detail about this, though, because it'd probably break the rule.
