Gary's Poser Unit Creation Thread and Workshop

I need a little help with this one. I need some sort of smoke puff effect for Poser but I'm not sure how to create one. Also I'm wondering about the victory animation. Should I have the victory start out from the default stance or the attack stance? If I do the default (which is normally the case with Firaxis) the unit will have a very abrupt transition.

Looking Good Gary... I sent you some files you can use for smoke and Flash.
An abrupt transition is ok because the Death and Victory do start from the default.
In other words, the unit will jump to the Default position at first regardless of what you animate.

Thanks for the files Greg! So I should start the death animation out of the default pose as well?

Gary...you do not have to start the Death from the Default but trying to stay in keeping with the default is best. The Death does Flash to the Default before the animation but it can be so fast that it does not register in the mind of the viewer.
Think of it as you would the Attack to Victory... If we have the animations at least "transition" from the Default...all works well.

To answer in other words... pretend the attack animation has played and your unit is then killed. That starts from the Default position. Now we do not have to have the exact Frame from the default but rather a frame that would naturally come after it.

Like the Crawing Brain Unit I made...the Death has him Flip and hit the ground, losing his "head"= Brain but that starts from the Basic Default position because the Death is After the Attack and that is back at the Default.

You can start the death with any position that would transition from the Default in any sort of natural way. Again...remember that even if the unit dies before playing all the way through the Attack...the Start of the Death would begin from the default.

excellent unit, Gary

I have only one question: in the preview you posted the loading of mortar looks very fast (I mean too fast) ;). Is this just a preview effect or is there a way to slow down this animation ?

anyway great to see you back at 'nam units

Well, looks like my unit making days may be coming to a close, for now anyway. Although I may pop in once in a while with one.

I got accepted into the University of Illinois - Springfield's online philosophy degree program. I'm actually going to try to finish up my bachelor's in philosophy, something I thought I would never go back to. It should take just over 2 years to complete, factoring in transfer credits and such. Between work and classes I probably won't have much time to work on units and really want to try to stear myself away from it as much as possible. So I don't forsee any new units in the near future.

I'll be devoting most of my energies toward learning and expanding my thoughts. It's been a while since I really sat down and studied philosophy. So in order to get back in shape I'll probably be spending a lot of time discussing and thinking about philosophy here on Civfanatics OT forums and other forums on the Internet as well as readings.

I may still occasionally mess around a little with 3D graphic programs but it will probably be quick projects to make props or things of that sort, just to kill a little time and entertain myself briefly here and there. Unit making is just too tedious and time consuming. I'm trying to get over my former gaming addictions and have largely been successful. I still game a little but am not nearly as consumed by it lately as I once was. I hope I can hold out for the time it takes to complete my program of study.

I'm hoping to go on to a master's degree and to teach philosophy at the junior college level. I've always thought philosopy was something important and that it is largely overlooked in the curriculums of public schools and small colleges.

Anyway, thank you for everyone's support in my unit making endeavors. Especially thanks to Vuldacon (the master), Steph (the multi-tasks-man), Ares, Bjornlo, Wyrmshadow, et al for all the help I received and thanks to Utahjazz7 for a great tutorial.

My apologies to El Justo, and Wolf66, I got off to a pretty good start but I don't think I'll be able to finish the Vietnam unit series as planed. I had such high hopes.

I'm semi-officially closing down my workshop thread for now. Whether or not I'll ever reopen it remains to be determined. I'll probably still be around Civfanatics, mostly in the OT forums debating philosophical issues or what not, trying to get my brain back in shape after being a gaming potato for so long.

All told I'm trying to create a very radical change in my habits and behavior. Not an easy thing to do. So far so good...

Best of luck on your academic pursuit. :)

Your creations will be missed, of course, but philosophy is a fantastic dedication! :D

Good look Gary and do not worry, real life comes always first.
Let me thank you once again for your contribution:
Right now I'm uploading to EJ a new edited TVW folder containing lots of your wonderful units

Goodbye mate!

For what it's worth, you have my full support and appreciation for your efforts, past and future.

All Best Wishes,

Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Illinois! I dabbled in philosophy back in the day and found it very interesting. This is a worthy goal you've chosen and I wish you the best of luck.
