[GS] Gathering Storm General Discussion Thread

The website says "Nine new leaders from eight new civilizations are introduced. "

Doesn't this mean that Eleanor isn't a possibility? I wonder if it was unintentionally written that way, but that doesn't seem likely at all.
It says eight new civilizations and 9 new leaders.
Eleanor is probably all but officially confirmed.

So we have a new Nature Wonder I think:

A little late to the trailer release, but does anyone have a strong guess as to what event the priest and the earthquake might have represented? The two guesses on Reddit seem to be Byzantium or Lisbon, but I figured this forum had a bit more of an eye for historical detail.

Based on the iconography on the mosaics, it's most likely Byzantium. There are 2 possibilities; either one of the 2 great Antioch earthquakes or (my guess is) the great Constantinople earthquake: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/557_Constantinople_earthquake

Very well, the revelation of the largest Civ expansion to be ever made by Firaxis... And on my birthday... Thank you Firaxis, for this great present!

Why is it the largest expansion?

This all looks much, much, much better than expected. Really looking forward.

As to what the screenshots show and I haven't read yet in here:
I wonder about the wonder in the first screenshot. I'm pretty sure it's from India, but I can't remember seeing it before.
The new IZ building in screenshot 2 is probably a coal plant.
Side note to screenshot 2: not ship could ever go through that bend in the canal.
Screenshot 3 has a geothermal power plant improvement.
The mound doesn't look American at all. It's probably an early fort variant as a UI.
There is a strange wall in the ocean in the background - is that a weirdly looking dam in the ocean?

It's also the only one of the three that looks convincing IMO.

I agree, Eleanor doesn't seem exactly right to me, the image isn't very high quality but something seems unusual about her to me. It could just be because of them being still in progress, but I'm not sure about them, especially after reading the text on the site.

I read it like 9 new leaders and 8 new civilizations. Pretty sure that was the case in the previous expansion.

I took a quick look at https://civilization.com/news/entries/civilization-vi-rise-and-fall-is-now-available, and it says "NEW LEADERS AND CIVS: Nine leaders and eight new civilizations are introduced."

I think this text is pretty carefully chosen, it could be unintentional but I'm starting to suspect something different.

It says eight new civilizations and 9 new leaders.
Eleanor is probably all but officially confirmed.

On https://civilization.com/news/entri...ew-expansion-release-date-pc-february-14-2019 it says "NEW LEADERS AND CIVS: Nine new leaders from eight new civilizations are introduced." in the summary. Is there another section worded differently?

Oh that's true with the 'from' instead of 'and' makes it sound like one of the new civs has two leaders. Could just be a mistype though.

So I took the time to process and gather my thoughts after the announcement of the new expansion, because there is A LOT to take in.

I love the dynamic environments and the natural disasters.

I've never actually wanted canals in the game - but not in a "I hate them" sort of way. I've always seen them as a cool concept but have viewed them with a but of apathy. I guess it's neat to see them here.

FINALLY! Diplomatic victory! More dynamic diplomacy! World Congress motherfathers! Finally they can get the emergency system to good use! And replacing warmongering with grievances is a very welcome change.

I also like the global warming/climate change mechanic. Although since this mechanic seems dependent on the player's actions in the environment, I wonder if they will take into account times in human history when there was a significant change in the climate without human intervention, like the Medieval warming period or the Little Ice Age?

Ditto this quote:
However, the Global Warming mechanic has always been problematic... the game forces you to industrialize to compete, but then punishes you for doing so. Making it work is a highwire balancing act that Firaxis hasn't got right yet.

Overall I am genuinely HYPED and excited for this expansion!

However, besides the civs and leaders that are going to be included in this expansion, there is one major worry that I have:

$40 price tag for this one
... and with all the dynamic features that this expansion has I'm worried about how this will affect my computer's graphics and performance. That is my major main worry about this one.

Ok, back from washing my pants
Wow... just, wow! WOW!
This is not just an xpac. That sounds like an entirely new bloody game, a Civ 7!
Rewatching the stream, as I coudn't see half of it live, but... is it February yet? :D

Hmm, the changes are extensive, but I'll hold off on declaring it nearly a new game, personally. Much of R&F slipped in very smoothly, limiting the additive feel. I would expect similar in this one, limiting the effect of the additions. We'll see in the weeks to come if my reservations are justified.
