[GS] Gathering Storm General Discussion Thread

Btw, those who said they would expect some gameplay due to the agonizingly long wait seem to have received their desires. I wonder if they're sated.

Ed just said that Russia gets a civ ability where their units are immune to blizzards but enemy units take more damage. So we got a mechanic for a Russian winter now when you invade Russia. Very cool!

With that in mind, too bad the scenario isn't Barbarossa in WWII. Though it is the centenary of the end of WWI...so that's okay.

HOF for all versions of the game.

"In Gathering Storm, Favor is a new form of currency to track your diplomatic goodwill. It serves as voting power in the World Congress so you can get the world community to adopt your ideas. On the other side, we’ve replaced the Warmonger score with Grievances. This acts as a tug-of-war between a pair of players – if you’ve ever been at the receiving end of a surprise attack and retaliated by taking a few cities, I think you’ll appreciate how this system has been updated. The other leaders are now likely to feel that such a countermove was entirely appropriate."

Warmongering is gone, Hallelujah!

They also state that the World Congress can ban things like chopping rain forest, but I really hope it's possible to ignore the World Congress this time, just for Diplomatic Penalities.

The world congress stuff sounds the most meh. And yeah, I hope it can be ignored, for a penalty.

No love for religious victory in the late game or is religious victory gone, being replaced by diplomatic?

I doubt that! It better not be, especially with how dull dip vic sounds at this point.

Well but that is essentially what we've seen happen in the real world. Starting with the industrial revolution, nations did have to industrialize hard to compete with each other but now we know that all that industrialization carried with it a heavy price and nations are being punished for it. So it is realistic. But also, the game gives you a solution to fix the problem so it is not really punishing you per se, just forcing to you adapt and change strategies at some point.

Hah! Name me some nations that are being punished for it! :lmao:

We didn't see it but I am SO glad they changed Australia's colours .... Fluro Green and Black was just a nasty combination

Awesome - so to more conventional green & gold?

OK guys. I think I found something big. Confirmation of Phoenicia or Carthage Civ

+2 gold from Cothon for Commercial Hub.
Cothon is unique harbor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cothon

Thinking about the marketing, I have to say this was a smash hit for me. Building up over a day and then starting with Sid was awesome. I think the whole announcement and event was great.

Great find! And I agree with @blackcatatonic that it looks like Pamukkale will be a new natural wonder too, possibly indicating the Ottomans as well?

I'm hyped. I admit it. Looks really good to me. It's excellent that the player gets to choose how much of these natural disasters he actually wants to interfere with his game, that was important! The hyperreal fastpaced gamesetting surely wouldn't be for me. DV and World Congress are excellent additions building on the emergency system which makes 100% sense. And the map-generation overhaul, the building queue (incl. queue "manager" (!!)), canals (meh, but ok), and changes to agendas in the later eras (Ed mentioned that) are a very welcome addition.

The only concern I have is this: What about AI? Tons of new stuff - can AI handle it? What about the already existing stuff? What about improvement of AI in general? It was pretty obvious to me that Ed and Dennis said alot about alot but not a single time AI came up. Dennis made several remarks that now you not only play against the competitors anymore but the map itself. A good idea in general, but is it because the competitors are still imbecile, dull-witted idiots? I certainly hope not, but I'm not convinced otherwise...

...
But how are people saying that civs (besides Maori) are confirmed? I didn't see any evidence beyond Maori of confirmed Civs.
Incas have been in the trailer, that's certain.

This is a complete overhaul of england. Might make some people here happy.
I hope they also overhaul other civs. This is my main criticism, that I didn't really like the design of the core civs.
They said they altered 5 of the original-game civs. And maybe I'm wrong but didn't they also mention, these had been in the game they played? At least they mentioned a Chinese and a Russian change. I wouldn't be surprised if Pericles got a swing towards DV as well as France...

The only disappointment for me is thus far is the lack of new governors. I was really hoping for one or two new ones.
I'm thrilled about everything else.
I disagree but there seems to be one unique governor. Far more important is the fact that they overhauled the whole system - hopefully that now you actually have to think who to choose and to promote.

... However, the Global Warming mechanic has always been problematic... traditionally the game forces you to industrialize to compete, but then punishes you for doing so successfully. Making it work is a highwire balancing act that Firaxis hasn't got right yet.
Agreed, but on the other hand this is quite literally the point at where we are right now in RL, aren't we? FXS always didn't go too far when it came to disadvantages for the player due to his own actions - Take the dark ages for instance - not dark enough IMO. I'm quite sure the stretch into the future techwise is a way to absorb some of the shock of climate change...

I have to say, I was very worried when Sid showed up - I'd expected them to start with the trailer or something, and then I was like, oh god are they announcing something where they're worried people won't like it, so they'll start with Sid? And it turned out all fears were unfounded.

HYPE HYPE HYPE

To be fair, of what we've heard of new mechanics so far - how much actually significantly affects AI decisionmaking? They'll just suffer natural disasters, in fact much like we do, a single modifier can steer them towards "prefer clean energy when available" to avoid polluting too much, etc. The only new coding you need to do for this expansion is World Congress and the reworked warmonger (or not really warmonger anymore) system. Other than that your AI guy can focus on improving current AI.

I misread this, and thought you meant the turn times themselves being angonizingly long with this expansion, which I admit is a major concern for me. It's already at the point where I'm usually ''multitasking" with a book/Netflix/my phone late game.
